Spent the money to build it and seems to work, why not keep flying it if it isn't a problem.

The space race was such a big deal in its day, it cost so much money, intellect, and time. What a waste to end it now.

I remember the first shuttle launch and how incredible it was. It will be the sad end of an era.

With the next launch of the Atlantis it will be the end of an era for US space flight. I will be at the Atlantis launch to see history, but more to the point, the fading of a huge 50 years of space flight acheivements.

I got the chance to go on Columbia when she was in for maintenance. We were working with NASA on upgrading equipment used to maintain these old birds. I am amazed they were able to keep them flying this long and my hat is off to the ingenuity of our American engineers that made it happen even facing harsh budget cuts by so many administrations and an unappreciative congress. This is 60's technology that still works. Hope the next programs, government or civilian are as successful as this one was.

I recall my first exposure to the Shuttle when as a subcontractor, visiting Rockwell - Downey to prepare a proposal response for provision of the custom batteries. I walked past the Apollo Command Modules in various states of assembly, custom suiting of individual astronauts and on out into a hanger where I observed at one end the nose, the opposite, the engines and up over my head, the wind tips, all laid out in full scale design. Then, I realized, this sits upon an additional flight vehicle, needed to exit Earth orbit and reach the International Space Station that was still a concept being detailed for accomplishment, and at the same time, we had Skylab flying about in Earth orbit for our astronauts.

I watched and held my breath. It was awesome as it always is. I really feel a lot of anger at obie for ending our active NASA launches. ERRRRR, that is just Anti-American.

...the decline in interest in the space program can be blamed on the US educational system , it was to American and generated pride – patriotism – unity ...all things that stand in the way of the exploitation of the general population that is the disinterest and ONLY goal of the “liberal” communist educational system
I come from a time when it was not a “crime” to be a proud American ! From a time when public schools actually minded the business of education

You want to keep the space program?

Then write to your got-damm representatives to raise taxes to pay for it.

You right wing dipsticks always say "CUT SPENDING - DON'T RAISE TAXES" to balance the budget. But then you want programs like NASA continued. And CLEARLY - the GOP got their asses handed to them on replacing Medicare with vouchers. So now that's off the table. Same thing will happen if they try to kill Social Security.

So either tell your Reps to raise taxes - or QUIT BITCHING about NASA getting moth-balled.

After all it is the last one for who knows how long.
Another Obama fiasco. he did not need to shut it down, put on hold or whatever you want to label it. it is the last, and that HE is Responsible for.
But, I am sure someone will say it was Bush's Fault........
