Should Youtube censor religiously offensive material? Who decides what is offensive?

Not A Fool 2012/02/28 06:41:04

Censorship is the coward's refuge.
I understand that a web site has the "right" to filter or block or censor whatever it wants, but it raises the question "what, now, is the purpose of youtube?" Is it to promote a certain viewpoint? How far is youtube going to go with censorship? Will they move into every other field of thought? Politics? Humor?
I find the comments on youtube equally as insulting as the videos themselves. So, will they start censoring the comments, too?
And who is making the decision as to what is or is not offensive? And are they censoring anything offensive to ANY religion, or are they going to be biased in favor of one religion?

Censorship may be that to you but companies don't look at it like that, it's a business that needs profit to survive and when customers or advertisers start to complain or leave they lose money. So the majority of them listen to the complaints.

In the grand scheme of things it all comes down to money.

Unfortunately, you're right. It almost always comes down to money. And censorship is the cowards refuge.

Cute song, nice groove. Bet somebody somewhere finds this religiously offensive. Not me, though.

Censorship is not the answer. Once youtube goes there, they are no longer an open forum but just another biased website.

No, and I think you offered the reason why not in your question. As soon as someone is put in the position of deciding what is and what is not offensive you have a problem.

Thanks. Not sure what their motivation is. I'm curious to watch and see what happens.
