I get so sick of seeing druggies getting assistance when it is known they will spend it on that drug and all they have to do is attend weekly drug meetings. These people get this addiction for a disability then people who really need it get the blame.

Addiction is sad, but it is not a disability. It is something that you brought on yourself, no one forced you to start taking drugs, or drinking or whatever you are addicted to. You chose to start taking the bad things, you need to choose to stop. Being weak willed is not a disability.

They chose to use whatever substance they got addicted to and they can choose to stop if they really want to.

because an addict has a choice to get off the drug, its bogus to say that once an addict always an addict, if you believe that and you are an addict you have no desire to stop, i know for a fact been there done that havent looked back in 5 years and counting

IMHO ONLY if you agree to get help from Rehab to get off the drugs.....when drug free, the TEMP disability should then end.

Doreen, agree with you. One other thing, I know of a Company (although there are many) that will ASK you if you have a drug problem.(OR you can go to them and tell them you have one)..they will offer you rehab help, and hold your job for you. Ironic, eh?

Sucks. I mean I do not feel that they should not get help but giving them money, food stamps, health care for free then a job also. How about jobs for people who are clean and have been working their ass off to find a job?

I say no if you are referring to getting disability FOR the addiction or BECAUSE of the addiction.
If you were clean and sober when you became disabled, then yes, you should still qualify for disability (provided you have disability insurance or your company provides it).
That is not to say that the government should provide disability, just that you shouldn't be penalized for a problem that doesn't interfere with your work or have any bearing on the nature of your disability.

I meant yes, but depending on what the addiction is and if they agree to go through long term inpatient counseling. I know it's expensive, but if we are giving them taxpayer $$ anyway, why not just go all out and have them committed for a year to a facility to get them off whatever their addiction is? I think the hardest addiction is probably to food b/c it's the one thing you HAVE to have in order to survive.

In my State, addiction is by law not a disability. Also pursuant to the law, if addiction is considered a contributing factor of the disability - regardless of what the debilitating medical and/or mental condition is - one is not considered disabled.

Obesity is just a viscious cycle. Some people start out thin, get a little heavier, get depressed, eat for comfort, get heavier, eat for even more comfort, get obese to the point where they avoid friends and family and then food is their only friend and at that point, it's an addiction...when they can no longer do their normal daily routines which leads to more depression and eating, etc. etc etc.

So you are saying that if someone is addicted to food, becomes obese and gets diabetes, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, hypertension and hyperlipidemia and end up having to have their leg amputated, that the State of Michigan STILL wont consider that person disabled? What is that person to do?
