The U.S. is simultaneously low on jobs and incomes, and consuming large amounts of unhealthy food. You might think the problems would be mutually exclusive, but according to Florida senator Ronda Storms, health is a problem even for those using food stamps to get by. She recently sponsored a bill that proposes to regulate what kinds of food items are allowed to be purchased with food stamps.

Storms said, "If we're going to be cutting services across the board, then people can live without potato chips, without store-bought cookies, without their sodas." According to the Los Angeles Times, she decided to sponsor the bill when she saw shoppers purchasing "fatty, highly-processed treats" being bought with taxpayer money. Similar bills have been rejected in the past, while some organizations are trying to encourage healthy buying with reimbursements.

Only in American can you be poor and fat. And then DEMAND a nonexistent right to become fatter as someone else pays your bills.

There is a marked relation between poverty and obesity. Let's try and get the costs of healthy food lowered and make it more readily available in forms most consumers want to buy. Then we can tell them they can't buy chips and soda.

food stamps have a direct impact on food cost - prices go up when food stamps go up . its a funny world liberals live in where the problem stems from the cost of something so the answer can be found in having the Gov-Ment pay for it....

This is how government takes away our rights. One step at a time under the guise of doing things that are best for us.or my favorite (for the children) This is how we've ended up with anti trans fat, anti salt laws....... Obama care is scheduled to be fully enforced by 2016, are you willing to allow government to decide that since it's paying for your health care, you can no longer eat ice cream, or chocolate, or french fries, a ding dong or a twinkie?? Millions are on food stamps not by choice, but because government meddling in our economic system has come crashing down and put them out of work. I'm sick of government telling me what to do, I don't want it to be telling anyone else what they can or cannot eat either.

healthy choices are not cheap and are not readily available to the consumer in a manner that they will buy.

Until then, I'll kill anyone who touches my chips!!

i know just as much as anybody. i live just on the poverty line and i can't get benefits i know a lot of people who have get food stamps and if we got that kind of money we'd be able to live well enough and still eat fairly healthy and yeah i agree healthy food aren't readily available mostly because its whats in this health foods craze. because of that they jack the price right on up.

Junk food is only cheap and available because of market trends and mass production (BTW most of it is imported) Junk sells so stores stock junk - if Food stamps did not pay for JUNK we would see a shift in what stores stock -

...last three words HELP OF THE PUBLIC . Food stamps started off to offset the price of buying REAL food for poor families ...now its just a way for people to buy crap they don't need and have the "rich" pay for it

I under stand your point of view. Just a couple of years ago It was also my opinion. However after exhausting my unemployment, my savings, selling off my belongings, and finally cashing in my retirement programs, I was forced to start using the food stamp program 4 months ago to survive. (I would much rather be working) but just because the economy has made people suffer, should they also be forced to forgo a few treats and pleasures?

yes I would ! that money and that program where put in place to buy bread eggs and milk for poor children - not so that you me or any body else can have a treat we can't (or won't) pay for ourselves

Yeah actually, some would. That candy bar COULD have been contributed to REAL food - an apple, a head of lettuce, even a small steak - and that would have filled a stomach a LOT more than a damn candy bar, king size or not!

Like I said, your dollar, fine, but not food stamps. HELL NO.

Lolz but it is my dollars . It is what I have been putting in for 43 years just in case I need it . Ill probably never collect a dime of it or SS but still 43 years worth has got to be worth a candy bar for crying out loud . You are only 23 and probably will change your mind by the time you reach my age and feed half the damn states not to mention all my money going over seas or in some worthless rich senators pocket .

Please try to remember though, that a huge chunk of the people now enrolled in the food stamp program, are people that used to have jobs in construction, manufacturing, professional trades and are people that were paying taxes, and funding those food stamps.

But it is amazing how many people went crazy when the government suggesting taxing junk food as not being a food item. All of a sudden the government was telling them what to eat and they thought it was Naziism. Never mind the rate of obeisity and diabetes in this country and the fact that people deliberately eat what they know is crap and making them sick. However, food stamps won't feed you. If you rely on them you end up eating tons of rice, beans and macaroni which make you just as fat and diabetic as living on potato chips. Why? Well, how much pasta can you buy for $3? How many fresh vegetables? $3 will get you ONE bell pepper. One tomato. It won't buy you a salad but it will buy you 2 cans of green beans. I have a relative on food stamps and it is amazing how little she gets. You can not eat healthy on that.
