We thought it was a pretty remarkable gesture (though Donald Trump would disagree) when Christian Lopez, the 23-year-old man who caught Derek Jeter's landmark 3,000th hit, returned the ball to the Yankees shortstop. For nada.
Well, in return, the Yankees rewarded Lopez with $50,000 worth of compensation, including four season tickets for the sweetest seats in the park.
But that went sour when Lopez revealed he might be taxed for his reward.
ABC News reports that Lopez currently owes about $150,000 in school loans. Taxes or no taxes, we're sure it won't take long for him to regret not holding onto the ball which could have fetched upwards of six figures.

I'm just waiting for the IRS phone call. I'm not going to let something like the IRS stand in my way from enjoying myself. For right now, I'm going to enjoy everything I can ... I don't have any regrets. The tickets were a great gesture by the Yankees. I'm positive they didn't think about the repercussions of it.

You own & live in "your own" home - they tax you. You maintain/improve "your own" home - they tax you. You die - they tax you/your inheritors. ....ad infinitum..... Not saying anything about all the freebies they give those who pay NO taxes .... "they" = IRS & US government in general.reply
- Art 2011/07/30 20:01:33NoIt figures that someone would want to tax an individual who was rewarded for a nice gesture showing he was part of history and that the ball o=would mean more to Jeter than it did to him. That the Yankee organization chose to reward him came as an unexpected surprise. I suppose a case could be made that contestants on game shows must pay taxes on anything they win then he should pay taxes on the gifts received from the Yankees. But, that doesn't make it right by any stretch of the imagination.reply
- nefertari 2011/07/28 00:49:23NoHell no...is Uncle sam dipping his hands into everything now so that the Kenyan can give it away to the lazy sob that doesn't want to work and just depending on a government check each month?reply
- Joey 2011/07/27 21:44:04NoCongress or at least the ones that didn't get this are mad cause they are not getting the tickets. Next they will want to tax you for being a part of history. He didn't get any money so no tax. If he sold the tickets for the money that might be diff. but they are going way to far. Its so you cannot even sneeze without getting a tax or a fine of some kind.reply

- jenna.devore 2011/07/19 11:06:12NoIt was a gift so why in the world should he be taxed he gave the ball back which is KUDOS to him and he was offered the opportunity AS A GIFT to get 4 season tickets to see the Yankees play.. COME ON the government loves to squeeze us! And in regards to the compensation I think that the money was as well a gift and does not need to be taxed if he were on a game show I understand but this is something that the Yankees did on their own free will... Isn't this a FREE COUNTRY ANY MORE?? DOES EVERY GOD DARN THING HAVE TO BE TAXED.. next they will tax roaches for living in buildings... LOLreply

Perhaps in the same spirit Jeter will be able to help Lopez out. I'd hate to think the IRS could be an instrument in this case of the old adage: No good deed goes unpunished.reply
