Should we move the minimum voteing age to 30?

I don't think you should be able to vote until you have experienced life on your own for a while. You can't make an informed decision if your living off mom & dad and having everything provided for you. Get a job, pay your taxes, try and buy a house, start a family, get some reallity under your belt then you can vote.

If they're old enough to die in combat, they're old enough for any privilege this country has to offer.

What a silly desire. Restrict voting and eliminate a group that would vote most likely democratic. Instead why don't you amend the beliefs of the party to be not so restrictive? Too difficult to push for more freedom?

while under 30s might not always have the most enlightened views, i'm sure there are just as many over 30s with ridiculous notions, too. for some people, experience doesn't change much

Wouldn't make a difference. 30 year olds would still be voting for the lesser of two evils.

So what? Before people before age 30 don't exist or have a right to have their voice represented? They can die for their country, but have no say in it? And how many people are still living of mom and pop before 30? Some 16 year olds live on their own while some 40 year olds are still in the basement. Age doesn't always mean experience.

    Psh, 30 years old?

How about this, the only people who have the right to vote AND go into office must volunteer 4 years of their life in the military?

They'll gain the experience on how to work and communicate with people of different backgrounds.(which many politicians do not have)
They will have learned the benefits of maintaining order, and using materials economically. (something I believe we can all agree that our current government needs)

And above all, they will have EARNED the right to vote for the country, and lead the country, by having served it voluntarily.

Because I know to many irresponsible 30 year olds, who do not know what is going on the in world. Who do not know how to communicate to others. And who are not economical with anything.

Yes Voters should have experience. But experience does not come with age, It comes in experience.

I have to comment on this, since it is bugging me a bit. So, you want to raise the voting age because in general most people dont know hardships. Hm, i think this is wrong. Each person, goes through hardships in their own way. Would you let, let's say, a fourteen year old vote, because they are emancipated from their parents and know hardships and being on their own, than a thirty year old?

You really cant compare hardships/experiences in life to age. And not everyone lives with their mom and dad, dont have a life. That's like saying, okay i dont have a life, since im living with family and its just so much easier, not having a job, so much easier living with people that hate you and call you names and etc. In fact, i think people who live with family who hates them, live in reality a bit more than you think. Just wanted to put my thoughts out there on you saying that it is soo much easier to do all of this stuff because we dont live in reality, we live in a delusional world and dont know hardships at all.

There are people that are under 30 that know more than those over 30 and vise versa. Age really has nothing to do with how much or little you follow politics and the like.

That may be a bit extreme, however I would be in favor of a competency test, in order to be eligible to vote...so many are uninformed as to the candidates backgrounds and qualifications

They don't know everything, but neither do 40, 50, 60 even 90 year olds. Raising the voting age would accomplish nothing.

I think either the voting age needs to be raised to 21 or the drinking age lowered to 18.

Age does not determine maturity or how well informed people are.

I'm tempted to say yes just so that I don't feel obliged to vote, but that would be asinine. I'm sure there are many 18-29 year old people who are more than happy doing all this candidate research, so for them I must say no. I would prefer a voting age of 21 like what it was before Eisenhower, but I think that many 18 year old teens have been through a lot. From 1999-2000 (that's 12 years ago, so it's probably between 30% and 60% now,but closer to 30%. A lot of those unemployed teens are looking for a job though.) about 75% of 18 year olds worked the summer and/or the school year on top of everything they have to do for school and life. These workers pay taxes. Many teens have actually dealt with very real life experiences. (or at least from what I've seen.) Plus many 18-24 year olds don't even vote. (57% didn't vote in presidential elections in 2004. That was Bush's election.) While I'd prefer 21, I see little reason to not allow 18 year olds voting rights.

Age doesn't determine how mature someone is. I know some 18 year olds who know more about the candidates and politics then their parents. Plus if you're old enough to die for this country you should be allowed to vote for who is running it, as well as being able to drink.

they might not know everything there is to know, but if they choose to vote, they can easily find out everything they need to know.
Anyway, from my experience on here it's the over 30s that blindly follow a political side without paying any attention to their policies. Just trying to find faults in their opposition.

Hey, your 51 you know we already tried that and it didn't work, back then I was all for allowing anyone in the service to drink at 18, young people in the military are a lot more mature and disciplined than civilian youth I have no problem with young Military people voteing and drinking. We can add a provision to the law that allows 18 year olds and up serving in the military to vote and drink especially since its the Politicians who decide to send them in harms way.

if you can be drafted and pay taxes you can vote period. Age doesn't automatically determined how informed a person is about their candidate, that's up to them to research.
  • Ron Rebel Uke 2012/06/24 14:09:08
    Ron
Well if you can be drafted and pay taxes at 18 then why can't you drink alcohol? Because your not mature enough yet thats why. That was the same arguement when I was 18 so they let us buy beer & wine and guess what it didn't work we were not mature enough and a lot of young people died that shouldn't have because of that. In general your not mature enough yet, I know you think you are so did I when I was 18 I knew everything, riight. Tell me something do you know more and do you make better decisions now or when you were 9?
  • Rebel Uke Ron 2012/06/24 20:03:55

because alcohol has shown to have damaging effects on your body. Voting is a right, drinking alcohol is a privilege...Know the difference.
