Should U.S. Olympians Have to Pay Taxes on Their Medals and Prize Winnings? (As of Now, They Do)

Last week, Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) introduced a bill that would exempt U.S. Olympic medal winners from paying federal taxes on their medals and prize money. "Athletes representing our nation overseas in the Olympics shouldn't have to worry about an extra tax bill waiting for them back at home," he said in a statement.

Under the current policy, Americans winning in London will add the value of their medals (around $650 for gold, $330 for silver, and $5 for bronze) and their prize winnings ($25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze) to their taxable income. At a 35% income tax rate, medal winners will end up owing the IRS around $8,750 for a gold, $5,250 for a silver, and $3,500 for a bronze.

Romney and a number of Congressional lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have jumped to support the measure. They, and many others, are appalled that these athletes who represent the United States are being penalized for their successes. However, others argue that Olympic medalists do not merit preferential treatment.

“The fact is that prize money from athletic victories is income, and there is no good reason for the government to treat that income differently than the income of all the non-Olympic athletes who earn analogous types of income,” wrote Conor Friedersdorf for The Atlantic. “Why should Olympic athletes be exempted from paying taxes on their prize money, but not professional golfers, or poker players, or winners of literary prizes, or folks who win the lottery?”

What do you think SodaHeads? Should U.S. Olympians have to pay taxes on their medals and prize winnings?

They are going to be paying HEAVILY on money they get from endorsements. Why charge them for the medals and the honorarium?

Me too Lucy. It can be hard to find a civil discussion with someone who doesn't share your perspective sometimes. So its always a pleasure when you come across somebody who just likes to share thoughts and ideas.

Exemptions are never good. Especially when they make prize money which covers the taxes for the medal itself.

Olympic athletes should not have to pay any taxes at all on their winnings. For many these winnings are a one time shot and they should be rewarded for representing their country. What about the many athletes who live and train in the US but compete for a foreign country. Do they pay taxes for both countries? Too many things are taxed. Paying taxes on endorsements is fine but not event winnings. Time to draw the line.

Income is income, how one makes their money should have no bearing on how that income is taxed.

There are our pride and joy and go to such lengths to win that they should not have to pay taxes on their prizes.

I think that we should increase taxes for the Hollywood crowd of addicts who produce obamas and other monsters. That would allow helping Olympians

They win more money in a few minutes than what alot of people make in one year....of course they should pay taxes on their winnings.

Most people are not dedicated and as special as these Olympians who bring pride to our nation which in itself derserves to be tax-excempt.

Not dedicated...really? I went to college for several years to become a nurse...work holidays, 16 hour days, go 8-9-10 hours without peeing, eating, get barfed on, bleed on, peed on, etc....if you want to talk about "special" people who bring pride to our nation, thank a service member of armed forces or police/fireman.

Agreed, I find that insulting. I should tell them how many jobs my mother works in order to earn enough to survive and yet she is still taxed on everything!

'Pride' is intangible and is not an exemption.

I have thanked them and all the nurses and doctors I ever met, but while the people are in the Olympics they should not have to pay taxes. I am not talking about their entire lives and when they go to work. I also think police and firepeople get praise all the time.

Most people do not get to live a life subsidized by the taxpayer either. And please don't belittle the dedication and effort that 'ordinary' people put towards pursuing their goals. If they are to be taxed, and them making you feel all warm and fuzzy for feeding your nationalist pride, you can always chip in out of your pocket and pay the tax for them. Just don't ask everyone else, many who work longer and every bit as hard as these folks, to pay because you want them to have a freebie

They are not like any ordinary person or athlete. A lottery player, professional athlete or beter is not a unique, pride of the country person like an Olympic athlete. After they finish the Olympics and go to work, then yes.

You Obama supporters believe this will help you out in some way. Winning a Gold metal is not quite the same as receiving money. I really doubt someone would really sell their metal for the money. Is it just jealousy on your part, greed, or just plain stupidity?

I don't need to. It has nothing to do with the conversation, and I asked where he stated he was an Obama supporter, and you mentioned his color and where he lives. That is stereotyping. You didn't say anything about a previous conversation, checking his profile. You mentioned color and location.
