It totally should; for every single war we fight. And my reasoning may surprise you.

At least in the past the owners had a vested financial interest in maintaining the lives of his slaves. The very purpose of the military is to risk those lives by putting them in harms' way. The political rulers have only a minor political interest in keeping too many from being killed and no financial interest in them at all. From a political perspective they are simply tools to be used. If their deaths serve the politicians more than their lives they will die.
The government can send you anywhere they choose, tell you when to get up, when to sleep, what to do, what to eat, what to wear, when to relieve yourself and, of course, whom to murder. Doing anything other than what you are ordered to do is extremely dangerous. Disobedience in the military can get you caged (we all know what happens in prison) or murdered by your political masters (which may be the kinder thing to do).
1. The first and most important mission of any service-member is to maintain the peace.
2. In this day and age, all service-members are volunteers who contracted with the government and as they have contracted their service, they abide by the terms of the contract, and wear uniforms, adhere to schedules, do their assigned tasks, wear uniforms, much like many civilians in civilian occupations.
3. I spent 10 years in the Army...two and a half years in Vietnam... I was combat arms... I engaged killed the enemy in battle...but never murdered anyone.
4. Refusing a lawful order is not dangerous.... but it is foolish. Depending on the offense...and guidelines of the UCMJ it could prove downright stupid.
5. It takes a very serious offense to end up in the stockade or prison. Military confinement facilities are not run the same way as civilian facilities. I also worked as a Drill Sergeant in an Army Retraining Facility where we retrained parolees from Leavenworth....and I never heard any of what you are referring to.
6. Killed by your political masters??? Where did you come up with that fecal gem? The last man executed by the military was in April of 1961.

Before any US service member can be executed for a capital offense, the PRESIDENT of the United States has to approve the death sentence and sign the death warrant.
So you see...what you said...was in error.
But I will see that seeing as you suggested it.! ;-)
No one is enslaved to the government fool. All citizens have a duty to serve their country in some capacity...even a twit like you could serve a useful purpose....like emptying bedpans in a VA hospital....if it wasn't above your ability to function.....LOL!
Kudos to your Granddaughter!!
