Train for what job? Where? Privatized prisons are filling jobs w/ people arrested for petty, victimless crimes; robots are replacing factory and farm workers; the Govt. PAYS to have American factories moved to China. How many Walmart's can you have, and they're all subsidized to death anyway.

Ok... I said no just because I'm unclear what exactly we're discussing. Are we talking about unemployment insurance or some form of actual welfare?

If unemployment, then there's all kinds of problems with that statement.

If welfare, people can receive welfare and still have a job, provided that job doesn't pay enough (e.g., a considerable portion of Wal-Mart employees). If you are truly talking about unemployed people on welfare, I am fine to say that they should work (community service, I guess?) enough to make it a minimum wage job (up to 40 hours and provided there is some sort of day care for parents). Of course, that's not really a large portion of what's considered welfare, but if it would make some people feel better I'll agree to that.

If they work they should not need welfare [most WALMART employee's are not on welfare]
Granted an entry level job at WALMART is min. wage but they promote from within also have a lot of perks others do not have.Profit sharing for one.I shop there a lot & find employee's that have been there many years. We are speaking of people that do not care to do an honest days work,& expect the people that do work to support them, welfare may come from the government but working people supply the government.

No one said most. Among other things, Wal-Mart is notoriously bad about providing health care benefits, and many of it's employees qualify for state or federally subsidized health care (which is usually considered a form of welfare). Just looking at wikipedia real quick, California estimates $86 million per year is spent providing health care for Wal-Mart employees and Georgia cites Wal-Mart as the largest employer of people on its PeachCare program. I'm not criticizing Wal-Mart employees, but Wal-Mart is not a responsible employer.

I am not totally against a work requirement for certain types of welfare. I will point out that it's not going to be free, and it may end up a miserable failure like the attempts at drug screening. Really, I don't see much difference between a work requirement for welfare and just creating some new government jobs. But we can call it whatever you want. I think that there's a horrible misconception about the number and impact of "lazy people on welfare", though.

Yes on both counts. Anyone receiving welfare or unemployment should be required to work a certain number of hours combined with new skills training along with a certain number of documented hours looking for work. Keep them busy.

I say "no" because most unemployed people are willing to work. Most employers are simply unwilling to hire. How about this: Instead of putting all of the money into the welfare system, take some of it and re-allocate it into education. The modern workforce is an educated workforce. Make the first two years at a community college or trade school training part of the public education system.

I'll be blasted as a socialist for this, but think about it: Would you rather have unskilled people constantly on welfare (you try living on minimum wage without help) or a skilled workforce that is gainfully employed? I'm not talking about a full ride or a Harvard scholarship, but real career training for people. The days of the H.S. diploma being enough are over.

If you are looking for an advanced level job, it can take a lot more time. Unskilled jobs do not take much effort.

It is not about taking your time looking, it is about the availability of jobs.
I have been there and done that at the age of 61. Just try finding an job with a great education and 40 years of experience at that age.

This is true, the people in those jobs are not leaving an awful lot of people in higher paying jobs, management etc.became unemployed because of business going under, changing hands, bankruptcy found the company they wanted working for much less hoping they will go back up the ladder.

And you know why we are unwilling to hire.......because of the dumbass in the White House. You want us to start hiring again then vote his dumbass out and you will see a big decrease in unemployment.

It would be so nice if that where true wave a wand & all is fine.I'm sorry but I do not believe B.O. did this all by himself also if he was a dumbass he could not have managed this alone it took us more than 4 years to get here & it will not go away over night,in fact the sad part is it may get worse before it gets better.
  • Ron sunniday 2012/08/24 00:18:52
    Ron
Oh I agree it took longer to get this way, but B.O. as you call him has prolonged the problem with his utter incompetence. The only way it will get worse is if B.O. gets re-elected then it will crash for sure. I've run businesses for over 35 years, they all run the same way just on different scales. No one is going to hire with that dumass in office he hasnt got a clue what to do. He just runs his mouth saying what he thinks most people want to hear and they blindly believe him. Go and talk to 8 or 10 business men and ask them if they plan to do any major hiring while Obamination is in office and get back to me.

[get a machine] never late,no breaks,no lunch hour,no insurance. But did prices go down?
No.but profit went up,It would be interesting if we all could refuse to spend our money with a company that used machines to service you.Do you think they might hire more people?I even had a politican here in Florida phone me to get my vote,I did take the time to tell the machine
that if canidate did not care enough to call me ,I did not care enough to cast a vote for him.

Only two answer choices. Obama has never advocated just handing out welfare checks. But, there are many who love that narrative so they will choose to believe it and repeat it.

“The myth of the Cadillac-driving welfare queen who defrauds the system lingers even though there’s no proof of it”, said Erin O’Brien, a poverty expert at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. There aren't millions in the system who are nonworking women having " guvment babies" every year. But...there are many working women receiving welfare and working at other menial jobs without reporting the income, O'Brien said.

In order for programs such as Workforce to be effective, there has to be job opportunities where training can be available. The worker must have transportation , child care, and if enrolled in daytime classes, that must be considered. Michigan had a program called “No Worker Left Behind” that helped fund unemployed people for new careers but it ran out of money so workers WILL be left behind. If people can’t be retrained for another career, what are they to do?

All I have to say to that is:

I had worked full time from the age of 12 , missed 4 days of work , was unemployed for 6 months....

Never drew an unemployment check , welfare or food stamps....

You do the math , I am now over 60...

I have paid FEDERAL INCOME TAX , EVERY YEAR I HAVE WORKED...

I am now disabled and still pay FEDERAL INCOME TAX...

I think a fat finger is a small price to pay....

Apparently, they're supposed to "try harder" - whatever that means. Most people I know who had to get welfare or some other form of assistance were actually employed or had their own small business going and hit a rough patch when the economy went bad.
