I would so love to say no but the truth is parents are not parents anymore. Many kids are raising themselves. So i'm gonna have to say yes because do we really want to see these children pregnant and unable to support their own?

I'm researching this topic for a speech that I need to give and am trying to figure out why parents do not need to be notified if their child is put on the pill. Do any of you know this? Because a minor can't even be checked by a dentist without a parents permission under the law?

They are still underage and are still under their parents' supervision. Still, providing them ways to get contraceptives could and would prevent a lot of problems. Don't know what to decide on this one. : \

Make it available to underage girls but only with parental permission.

If I have to choose, I'm more likely to lean towards that decision as well. But... truth be told, I don't know many teenage girls that would admit to their parents they are in need of contraceptives.

As the PARENT(s) you are fully responsible for everything for your children until they reach the age of majority ..
    Food, Clothing, Shelter ..
You provide for their needs (including Safety .. )
This means your Medical Insurance will be billed for that too ..
As a PARENT .. I should be aware of .. know .. exactly what MEDICAL Visits, procedures, Medications, whatever medical is going on with MY child indeed ..

Let me make it perfectly clear ..
If the underage minor is NOT with parent or guardian .. then NOPE .. shouldn't be getting anything medical at all . .period ..
The parent or guardian should be there ..
(and parents MUST Be responsible for their children too .. time to let PARENTs be PARENTs .. period!)

Sorry,I mean yes! Most girls start having sex early, and are ashamed to tell their mothers. I myself would not have done it even if we have a great relationship and we are good friends. I think wanting to take contraceptives is evidence of maturity and responsibility and allows them to live their lives without the trauma of an abortion or any unwanted pregnancies.

Some kids are not comfortable talking to their parents about this issue. Shutter the thought. I think letting girls (and boys) have access to contraceptives beats the alternative: unwanted pregnancy and/or disease.

underage girls (and boys) need to use self discipline, not contraceptives; orgasm's still attainable without coitus. shocker, huh?

Better than having an unwanted pregnancy without their parents permission. If teens are going to have sex, they're going to have sex and what their parents think about it doesn't matter to most of them when they are in the heat of passion. I'd rather have them use condoms and other birth control measures than to get pregnant or contract an STD.

Would you rather underage girls were having unprotected sex. If they are sexually active, what makes you think their parents give a damn? The goal is to reduce teen pregnancy and disease.

I guess it could go both ways. No because they're the parents, and yes because sometimes there are parents that aren't very rational when it comes to this type of thing and would end up going off on their kids and so the kids might end up getting pregnant cause the parents refused to buy protection.

Hence they are underage and the parents are responsible for them. On Prescription birth controls, the child should have the parents consent. Types of birth control that are not medical, like Condoms sold over the counter, then no. Children should not be having sex in the first place, But parents are not going to be able to stop it and practicing safe sex is a must. Not just because of getting someone pregnant, but to help stop sex related diseases

Some kids are going to have sex. Sometimes they can't ask their parents. Either because they are too embaressed or because they are afraid of what their parents will do. If a child needs Birth control then They should be allowed to get it, would you rather they get knocked up?

    Of course. They already can.

Any competent young person in the United Kingdom can consent to medical, surgical or nursing treatment, including contraception and sexual and reproductive health. They are said to be competent if they are capable of fully understanding the nature and possible consequences of the treatment.

Consent from parents is not legally necessary, although the involvement of parents is encouraged. (A parent is someone with legal parental responsibility. This is not always a biological parent.)

Young people are owed the same duties of care and confidentiality as adults. Confidentiality may only be broken when the health, safety or welfare of the young person, or others, would otherwise be at grave risk.

Many parents more than likely wouldn't grant their kids permission to purchase contraceptives anyway, but no access to contraceptives certainly won't pose as much of a deterrent for teenagers who plan to have sex. If they're gonna sneak around, they should do so safely.

    16 and older? Yes.

Not to mention, matters of health, things to talk to your doctor about, should be between a person and their doctor, not a person, their doctor, and their parents (teenagers are able to make conscious choices). My GP hasn't discussed my health with my parents since I was 14 (unless I gave her expressed permission... as was the case with a couple of hospital visits).

It's probably better that they do

They might want to have safe sex, but they can't get contraceptives since their parents won't let them. That being said, it's usually not wise to have sex while in high school.

This is the fine line we dance, parents should instill better values, and should not have to rely on the government to account for their shortfalls

absolutely not, nor any other prescribed medication or medical procedure short of surgical intervention to save her life. I don't trust the medico-pharmaceutical establishment to have my daughter's best interests in mind. I trust them to try to turn a profit, that is all.

I think parents should be mature enough to have a rational discussion with their child about using protection and then getting it for them. Make the kid do chores to pay off the cost of the products, it will teach them the value of money and keep them from making a bad decision. It's never a good idea to allow children to obtain medical treatment without parental consent. What if the kid is allergic? A million things could go wrong

What parents should do and what they do, do are two different things. Unfortuantly we have kids who do not have very good parents should they not be allowed on birth control because if they asked their parents they might get beat or their parents are too drnk or high to care? It would be nice if every kids had great parents they could talk to about these things but that is not the world we live in.
