ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates -- The main public advisory body in
the United Arab Emirates says it will push for stronger measures to
discourage revealing clothing worn by tourists and others in the Gulf's
most socially liberal country.

The Federal National Council backed the proposal Tuesday after the
country's culture minister, Abdulrahman al-Owais, supported efforts to
emphasis the conservative traditions of the UAE – which is now home to
nearly all of the world's nationalities in cosmopolitan centers such as
Dubai.

Yes, it's the polite and safe thing to do no matter what country you are visiting, and visitors to America should respect our culture and traditions also. Like that old saying......when in Rome....

If you are visiting a country, you should respect their customs. It's disgusting how so many from the west go to a country and get all upset because the people there don't want to change their customs and beliefs to fit their convenience. That is so rude. You should respect others' ways of living and culture.

At this point I don't think I'd go to any Arab country. I always wanted to visit the pyramids in Egypt, but with the crazies running things there I think I'll pass.

Given a decidedly different mindset, you're asking for trouble if you dress otherwise. Personally.........you wouldn't catch me setting foot in the Arab world, which is regretful given the history I'd love to experience.

    yes very much so

last week , in France , Two muslim women from Arabia were visiting Paris for holiday for 15 days ( they were wearing veils ) carrying alomst half million dollar to do shopping in champs elisee.

    what happened?
the France authority arrested them in aeroport asking them to remove their veil , they refused , the authority returned them back straightway via next aeroplane to their countries ?

so I wish and hope that any non muslim who visit arab country should feel ashame and dress according to the law and no swimming naked on the beach anymore - visitors should do that in their countries

it looks like same treatement from both sidses
don't you think is it fair.

look at the real oppression , and they say it's democracy ?
    what democracy ?

Now I would say this ..
when I've been stationed overseas ..
    on Leave ..
    I do dress modestly ..
Western style .. Slacks .. Polo Shirts ..
there should be some 'mystery' ..
(and you should be sensitive to their local customs too)

Being a guest .. know the culture and traditions ..
if you want to 'reveal' .. what should best be a little bit of 'mystery' ..
perhaps some other nation to visit would be a better choice for you ..

(you should feel free to show your face .. enjoy the sites .. and not be too 'encumbered' or uncomfortable .. but still .. free to move about in safety)

Yes, you are a guest in their country. What do you think Americans would do if tourists violated our conventions? We would be upset. If you don't tlike their conventions, don't visit.

as someone else said when in Rome, I don't think they should have to wear burkas, not that they are saying that but if the custom is dress modestly I think they should, its there country.

Unless of course there is a law against dressing a certain way. Otherwise, screw them! We're Americans.

There's an old saying though: ' When in Rome, do as the Romans do'.

I have never visted Arab countries, but when in any foreign country I respect the laws , customs, and culture of that country. The problem with Arab countries is what they consider " revealing clothing" would be sleeveless shirts and knee length shorts. Just stay the hell away from that area of the world.

Part of the fun of travelling to other countries, is to experience a completely different culture. So if you are allowed to visit their homeland, see the sights etc you should respect their overal modesty rules. If you don't want to observe their cultural rules, why go in the first place? Be respectful. I think most people are.

Yes. As they say...."When in Rome, do as the Romans do". It's being respectful of their culture, and you'll get along a lot better with the people if you're tying at least to blend in a bit. This is true everywhere.
