Should Top-Rated Public School Superintendent Make $500,000?

Carole Hankin, a top-rated and top-paid New York state public school superintendent, has come under fire from political analysts (and us a few months back at SodaHead) as well as directly from Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

However, Fox News reports that parents are happy with her work.

She heads what is billed as one of the top school districts in the country, and people pay steep property taxes to fund the schools. The district serves all of Woodbury and Syosset communities of Long Island, with approximately 7,000 students in 10 schools. When you add in benefits, Hankin takes home $542,000 -- and this year she even got a raise.

Cuomo claims that her salary is "wasteful school spending," but analyst Larry Levy warns that her salary is "so far out of scale that it puts a bulls-eye on the backs of all superintendents."

So many new schools, so little getting accomplished. If only parents held themselves responsible and their children accountable for the results Americans would be proud rather than embarrassed by the stats.
Education starts and ends at home.

My grandchildren are being homeschooled. My daughter has no formal college. My son-in-law has a BS in History. But my grandkids test better on state standardized tests than almost all public school children - and at 8, my granddaughter reads on a 9th grade, six month level.

We homeschool. Two graduated, 4 to go. I have friends who have children in public and private schools. They do very well in school. It's the level of involvement of the parents that make a difference.

My daughter SAT's this year, almost everything was post high school. The few that weren't are in subjects the school doesn't focus as heavily on. Not a public school.

If she's THAT good then pay her.

It's supply and demand of raw talent. She deserves every penny if she can build "the model" for how schools should be run.

But if offered everyone of you on Sodahead would also take the money. My thoughts are that the wealthy people of this community don't mind paying real estate taxes for a great public school system. Real estate taxes are tax deductions. It is probably cheaper than sending your their children to private schools.

We pay enough in property taxes to fund great schools AND we have to pay private tuition because the overfunded schools here SUCK.

Well then, move to upstate NY! Back east there are certain suburbs that boast great public schools. Yes, they pay more in property taxes and school usually get everything they need. Like I said it's a win, win situation because you can deduct your property taxes and communities that have great public schools have homes that are appraised higher on resale.
You know you might try being a little more positive...your attitude is a real downer.

You have NO idea what our local govt is doing to the schools here, it IS a downer, espcially for the kids.

except that every dollar comes out of someone who has earn the money in the private sector first.

that's an embarrassing load on any school district. Our supt makes $125k (plus benefits) for a system of 4500 kids. by this measure, he's way underpaid. i sit on the school board and i think he's way overpaid...

an employee is ALWAYS worth what an employer is willing to pay? really? what if the school board was a bunch of dummies? what if this Supe got in and did nothing? for a public sector job, especially one of THAT pay, this supe better be able to pass steak out of her butt.

I can not judge it and I don't know her qualification.

Based on the time she spend for education is equal to any lawyer or med. dr.

i don't know. as i'm sure in any profession, some are better than others. in teh case of an Administrator, they teach for a couple years, then get certificates as they progress up the ranks, depending on what each state requirements are.

yes. they can certainly go on to get PhD, but some of the education classes that i've seen are nowhere near the effort needed to earn a JD or MD.

my only point is that the bigger the salary, the bigger the impact on the tax rate. what do you think the asst supes are earning? $200+k $300k+

this story portends a budgeting fiasco.

A PhD is rated higher then a JD.

    I agree on tax savings.
But I am not the fed,

There are bigger issues to save taxes there are many ways to prevent big governing losses, (regulate credit futures as an example).

I had to choose yes or no in order to answer. Quite honestly I don't know enough about the woman or the job she does to offer an intelligent response.

But I would add that her salary should be between her and those that pay it, In my state no state money goes to school administration pay. If it is the same in New Jersey then the State Government in my opinion has no business questioning it. The school board and the voters in the school district are the only ones who really have a right to question her pay and benefits.

I hit wrong button... meant to hit no,.,.... but If it is even true, it is outrageous. But 99.9% of these stories quoting crazy high salaries are false. Heck the one about the lifeguards making $200K a year, was a complete BS lie... all anyone had to do was look on the Newport Beach website and see what lifeguards actually make, to find the truth. Same w/ firefighters and police officers and teachers.... all of this crap is RWNJ union bashing BS. I would like to see the proof that she makes this... because honestly, it just does not seem even possible.

This is easily true. Supers rape the school systems and rarely make a hugely positive impact. Edit: You can also look up online how much local Supers make. The district I went to school made 175,000 a year.

also infuriating is the salary of Philadelphia superintendent (reportedly $500K with benefits and perks), higher than both mayor and governor....oh and they just cut a crap ton of teacher jobs, extracurricular activities, etc...

Isn't that lovely? Where my friend works, they cut 7% of teachers because they had no money to pay them. They also just bought 200 I-Pads for the high schools. That money was spent by the Super and did NOT come from a grant.

I don't see how they can write their own salaries. If the job pays that... that is one thing.. but really... does that even seem realistic? There are claims that the average firefighter from the dept i retired from is making $125-150K a year. This is in the news, all over the place, and it is a blatant bald faced lie. I am retired, and am literally in the poverty level w/ my pay. The highest ranking official on the Fire Dept, the one and only in that position may have made over $100K a year, and he would have been the only one... and he is heading a dept w/ over 50 fire stations, 6 battalions, and over 1000 firefighters.

Again... I would need the proof to believe any of the BS I hear and read on a daily basis that is trying to slam and slander anyone in public service.

I did look it up, http://www.teachersalaryinfo....

Was not able to find the superintendents salary. but this shows the teachers salaries and their teacher /student ratios.... which are excellent.. 10-1 to 13-1 max... and that is awesome. Salaries are not that low, but not that ridiculously high either. Pre school teacher starts at $20,990/annual, kindergarten starts at $39,640, High school.. $52,000.
  • notokand Dana 2011/06/10 02:25:32

Yeah, that's pretty typical unless it's a unit district, then all the teachers (Elementary & High school) are on the same pay scale. Go to the district web and you should be able to find it. It's all public information, so it has to be listed.
