White House Aide Loses Job Over Flyover Fiasco
White House aide Louis Caldera loses job over Manhattan flyover fiasco involving Air Force One

By Kenneth R. Bazinet
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - The White House aide who authorized the controversial Air Force One photo-op flight last week around the Statue of Liberty is out of a job.

President Obama has accepted the resignation of Louis Caldera, the director of the White House Military Office, the Daily News learned Friday.

A secretary of the Army in the Clinton administration, Caldera took the fall for the public relations fiasco arising from the April 27 flyover, which was designed to replace a publicity photo of Air Force One flying past Mount Rushmore with a similar shot of Obama's 747 jumbo jet over the Statue of Liberty.

Caldera's office insisted the flyover was a "classified" mission and should not be disclosed to the public, ensuring that thousands of New Yorkers would be blindsided by an event eerily reminiscent of the 9/11 terror attacks against the Twin Towers.

Federal officials notified Mayor Bloomberg's office and NYPD officials in advance, but Bloomberg was not informed, infuriating the mayor.

Louis Caldera fell on his sword for King Obama needlessly. Everyone knows it was George Bush's fault. Early on in their defense, Obama blamed the flyover on Bush's FAA.

Poor Louis... now he has to find honest work!

90% of America probably thinks that is not Caldera's fault. 5% are the biased media still in their dance of devotion. 5% believe the bias media. Barry made jokes about it at his private party. Hmmm? First person Barry fired is a Latino. That should show them just how important their illegal vote is! LOL

He's not my leader, if you read my posts you will see that I disagree with just about everything he says and does. The point is the right people were advised and they made the call not to inform the public, no one seems to have questioned the rationale for not informing the public. Now this guy is being made a scapegoat by the Chosen One, so as not to be blamed himself.

"they made the call not to inform the public"

The people who were informed were instructed to not tell the public. I can see why, because a terrorist with a shoulder launching missile could have easily shot it down like a sitting duck. The real question is why would they do such a dumb trick in the first place? Greta Van Susteren had a much better picture of Air Force I flying over the Statue of Liberty which was photo-chopped.......so why did the White House risk the safety of the whole of NYC to do this $328,800+ stunt?

Anyway you slice it, it was really a costly, dumb, insensitive, immature stunt with no regard for cost or the people in NYC.

    Ken
The stupidity came from scheduling the photo shoot to begin with. You are right, if they had announced it publicly beforehand it would have alerted terrorists and there are a lot of those shoulder-launched missiles around, but the president was not on the flight. The point remains that this guy is a scapegoat - who okayed the decision to even do the photo shoot? They could easily get the same effect by photo-shopping a shot of AF-1 by the Statue of Liberty. I suspect that it was "green-lighted" all of the way up the chain of command, given the ego of the guy at the top.

You are preaching to the choir. I agree with you. In fact, Greta Van Susteren showed a photo-chopped photo which was better than the one they took while flying over the Statue of Liberty. The more I think about this, the more I think there was some other motive for that flight.
Could it have just been some kind of political payback for someone
to get a thrilling flight over NYC in Air Force I. For the life of me, I can not think of any reason to justify this stupidity on the part of the White House.

    Hello Ken,
I agree. In fact this whole thing stinks of a lack of military training or perspective, (Obama), a lack of political insight or sophistication, (Obama), a big fat overdose of hubris to even consider such a stupid stunt, (Obama), and an absence of accountability that goes with wielding irresponsible power, (Obama).

Nobody else could possibly have ordered this but Obama, and Caldera gets to bite the bullet. Everybody else is too experienced and too well trained at their jobs to have made such an irresponsible decision. And who, besides President Obama, has the clout necessary to be able to tell all those agencies to shut up. The order would have to have been given in his name and I refuse to believe he's given anybody that kind of authority without knowing about it ahead of time.

Hi Murph: I agree, I think it goes all of the way to the top. Certainly no underling would have okayed it without Obama's approval. You say hubris, I say narcissism, little difference except that the second is a personality disorder, evidencing a need to be admired.
