Should There Be More ‘Made In America’ Policies?

Finally! Something we can all agree on! A recent survey shows that both Democrats and Republicans agree that there should be more "Buy America" policies instilled by the U.S. government.

In fact, an "overwhelming majority" said that they would even support something from the government that mandated that taxpayer money be used on goods that are made in the U.S. Do you think there should be more "Made in America" policies instilled by the government? Or should individuals have the utmost freedom to buy whatever they want to buy... even if it ends up hurting their country's economy?

ABCNEWS.GO.COM reports:
While President Obama and Mitt Romney bicker over whose policies will send more jobs overseas, there is one side of the job creation coin that both candidates agree on: that the government should do its darndest to keep manufacturing jobs in America.

Unlike many of the job proposals both candidates are pushing, “Buy America” policies that encourage the government to buy products that are made in the U.S. whenever possible are hugely popular across party lines, according to a national survey commissioned by the Alliance for American Manufacturing and the United Steelworkers.

No, there shouldn't. Government policies should be buy the best product at the cheapest price. It's our money, not theirs, get some value for it.

But wouldn't that hurt the American economy?
  • Jesferk... bt sedlock 2012/08/12 20:00:01 (edited)

Depends on how you look at it. If the government buys American when it could buy the same or better from a foreign company for less it, of course, is spending more. That more demands higher taxes from the economy thereby hurting it by stripping it of resources.

It's been that way since the energy and Arab oil crises of the 1970s; the American people's love for the Amrican car and buying American was gone.

Maybe the oil pseudo-crisis of the 70's had something to do with it but I put more credence in that about the same era the Japanese auto manufacturers moved in and showed the American consumers what they really could get for their money. American car manufacturers, basically having a protected market, sat on their collective fat asses and then cried wolf when the Japanese came in and blew them away. If the Japanese didn't enter our market we'd still be driving in cars with drum brakes.

    made in america
More companies should make all their products in the U.S. instead of
having sweatshops in other countries doing it. This is so wrong because
it also takes away jobs for Americans. Our products last longer too so it
would not be so bad to pay a little more for them.

Anyone who voted "yes" are the ones allowing our country to be taken over by the evil people who suck out all freedoms. The government needs to provide an environment that encourages the free market & encourage businesses to stay in the USA.

It is simple economics. If you spend your american money on products made in america employees of the american company recieve the money. The more money sent overseas the less money the american people have overall.

I have nothing against Asian folks. But I'm sick of not having a choice when
I go to a store to shop and see made in China all over everything I need.

It's time to make "Made In America" mean something again.

This is not a matter of getting politics to make Americans buy from America, it's a matter of increasing the costs of importing from China.

Increase the costs of importing something that costs 1/10th the cost to manufacture somewhere else and your imports from China or any other country will dramatically decline.

Buy American or at least NORTH AMERICAN ( USA, CANADA,MEXICO) keeps jobs in the American region - which in turn keeps jobs in America...yes even if you buy from Mexico or Canada - you still support an American economy.

You have to realize the fact that Mexico also buys from the USA and well anybody in business knows that Canada is the US best trade partner.

So buying from Canada or from Mexico and you keep the American economy working as well.

It's far too complex to discuss this matter here, but as long as your imports don't cost you 1/10th to import, wholesale and retail - then you stand to gain.

Increase the costs of importing from an Asian country and you increase the opportunity to rebuild North America.

Then on top of that, endure that your product is not overpriced, your costs don't outweigh your market, your quality is better than the competition, the top people of the companies don't live in such a lavish lifestyle that they break everybody below the...

Mass produce your product in a fashion where it is more economical for other countries to purchase your goods and then invest that profit into other ideas and into the community to offer incentives not just for people working for the company, but for people who live in the towns nearby - so that it becomes a place of growth and prosperity.

Invest in free healthcare - because it will only benefit everybody - all the time.

A good plan - well defined and thought out is far better than a government creating a policy to "Buy American".

A policy with no ideas behind it is simply a mistake and a failure waiting to happen.

Yeah totally true... That's one way to go about it --and it seems like the smartest way to me... but when you talk about sensible trade policies that protect American industries, sweat-shop-loving conservatives call you Communist.

There's already policies in place when taxpayer money is spent on some goods, but implementing this throughout won't make sense. Talk about gov't spending it will balloon, and either there will have to be tax increases...or there will be tax increases. There's nothing wrong with buying China made goods, there just have to be a better trade balance. We manufacture goods here thats cost effective, others are built elsewhere because of cheaper labor. The cost of labor usually depends on the cost of living...and its a lot higher to live in America. We have to continue to be more advanced in technology, health, and infrastructure. Eliminate federal minimum wage, its keeping people out of work.

The last thing I want is another set of regulations from this government, everything it touches fails. Obama is not a buy American man, he's allowing Chinese firms and workers to buid our bridges and other infrastructure with Chinese steel. Another Obama lie.

We need to change our mindset. Americans need to buy American for the betterment of us all and our nation's prosperity. It keeps us working, our taxes low, our communities intact, our schools funded.

I try to buy American products, made by American citizens, and using only American made materials. Good luck getting it all, but I try to stay in the 80% and above range.

Use websites like the Chamber of Commerce, stillmadeiamerica.com, madeintheusa.com, madeinamerica.com, et al.

I question contractors before I hire them for work, "Do you hire only American citizens"? Where is your business license?

In theory, a good idea, but given the power of Wal-Mart et.al., utterly impossible. Also, how would folks accustomed to or reliant on inexpensive foreign-made goods respond to having to pay more for domestically made goods AND where is the will to rebuild the collapsed manufacturing infrastructure?

If people/congress think it's so important to buy American, why were they ready to send GM and Chrysler down the tubes, along with about one million American jobs. I have never dirven a car that was't made by an American company. Not assembled... If the imported goods cost as much as the quality American goods, buying American would be more attractive. What the government really needs to do: 1. Place high tariffs on imported goods 2. All government contracts and purchases should be made in the USA.

By the way, I am one of the bleeding heart liberals that people like to disparage. Hello. I raise my flag every day (half-mast until Saturday). I buy American and support the Labor Unions. I pay my taxes. I marvel at the wonderful roads and beautiful country as I drive to work (in my Chevrolet). I own a gun but don’t plan to use it. I believe in the greater good. I can pray anytime I want and attend the church of my choice. I love my country. Why do so many citizens hate it?
