Should there be 'gay only' high schools for gay students to go to?

So after a plan like this was instituted, you wouldn't be declaring "Segregation! Not right! Not right!" all over the place?

Well here's what my first thought was:
that's like the segregated schools before civil rights.
but then when you think about it, there are girls only schools. Not everyone goes to one but it is an option. And it is equal in education. But I don't think it would be the best idea.

I'm sorry that is completely irrational and stupid. Bullying happens everywhere no matter what school you go to so it wouldn't stop it, it would just take on a new face. Why segregate? It completely defeats everything people are fighting for! That would be two steps back for progress.

Why does this idea sound so familiar?

Well I'm a strong believer in property rights, so if it were a privately owned school obviously the owners would have the right to decide what direction to take the school.

This groupthink thing is out of control and needs to stop before we can ever progress as humans. That said, IF it was OPTIONAL, I suppose it's fine for anyone who would want to attend; but I doubt many would. Then there's the question of PUBLIC (taxpayer funded) schools. So now I'd say the taxpayers should get a vote on that. But then we don't get a vote on schools for the blind or disabled, so...Are we saying ANY individual who is caught and found not to conform to some segment of society's or some government's definition of "normal" or "morally or sexually suitable to attend public schools" with all the other "normal" kids, should get their own school on taxpayer dime? I'm a redhead female & very small, so constantly got bullied and beat up; EVEN stalked & left for dead in ditches-- no authority ever helped me. I should get my own school too? I'd say, let the individual parents with kids at the school decide; or better yet, HOW ABOUT ENFORCING RULES AGAINST THE BULLIES, instead of ostracizing & publicly humiliating their victims? & If you can't enforce those rules, then HOW ABOUT SPECIAL CLASS/SCHOOL FOR BULLIES? That way, ANYone bullied for any reason would MAYBE be safer & at least we would be calling out the actual bad behavior. Maybe then they would stop & the school and/or parents' failure to make their own kids work & play well w/others would be WELL KNOWN-- it's THEIR BAD, not ours. QUIT punishing victims for being victims!

I see this as a bully issue first, then a gov./legal/public school/parent issue, NOT a gay issue. So, if THEY, the bullies in question, can't be nice in regular school, taxpayers already fund schools for juvenile delinquents. And there are already hubris laws and laws against perverse behavior, harassment and assault, and public sexual exposure, etc, covering all obviously destructive or blatantly inappropriate behavior on the part of bullies and everyone else. So the answer there, at no additional cost to taxpayers nor additional punishment to victims, is to enforce the existing laws. If laws are not equally enforced and/or if justice is not equal, that is not law or justice at all!

Unless you are going to also make straight only high schools, white only high schools, black only high schools, boy only, girl only, etc.

I agree, that's great idea-- take individual responsibility for yourself. No doubt, bullies would be afraid of me now, but not when I needed them to be. Here's the problem (not with self defense classes, but w/the approach of this post in general): Will these classes be a part of the public school curriculum available to all, or just to the 'victims', and who pays? Why not make the freakin' bullies do something about THEIR bad behavior?? My point is the rest of us who are decent law abiding folk are supposed to be required to take action be responsible, and/or pay for others' crimes? That is a longstanding ABSURD and destructive philosophy. MAKE the bullies & their parents pay for a class, and make the tax funded school enforce their rules against destructive behavior, and quit piling on to the victims! Btw, I would like to see everyone have at least Tai Chi & some self defense available in public schools AND in rehabs and in senior communities, and even in the workplace for all.

I do believe the parents are even more responsible than the kids at those ages. Parents need to make sure their kids know how to defend themselves.

What does that do? Tell people that they should stick to others that are similar to them? The real world is much harsher than that.

The idea is not without some merit....perhaps even have a gay high school abroad so as to embrace cultural diversity. Establish the Baghdad High School which would serve as the pilot program. Le's see how that works out before expanding on the concept.

In addition to Baghdad, let's add Paris, Amsterdam, and Oslo.

Agree, but would it be 'optional'? If it's public (gov. defined curriculum, taxpayer funded), I seriously doubt it would be optional. So, identified gays would be forced to attend separate school? I'm not gay either, but was bullied. I doubt anyone wants to be singled out for gov. or society defined groupthink that says we are 'abnormal', or to be singled out as a victim and punished again by being forced into separate school for victims.
