Should the U.S. toughen its gun laws?

President Obama said Monday that he will unveil a package of proposals to combat gun violence later this week, but acknowledged the daunting politics of getting all the legislative components through Congress.

Speaking at a news conference a month after the mass shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., Obama said members of Congress “are going to have to have a debate and examine their own conscience” when it comes to considering gun legislation.

Vice President Joe Biden, along with several cabinet secretaries, have compiled a list of “common sense steps” to reduce gun violence, Obama said — the fruits of a nearly month-long working group that consulted with law enforcement, gun rights groups, mental health advocates and gun control supporters, among others.

There are already gun laws in place, it was a sad day what happen in Newtown, but why did they let him in, His mom was not there, he does not go to school there, and he had no children there, He should have never be let in the building. So, don't attack
gun owners because what happen. Stand up for the 2nd Amendment , it protects our constitiution.

We already have way to many useless gun laws on the books.. Just need to enforce the laws we now have.. Their ideas of "common sense steps" have nothing to do with stopping violence. And everything to do with cosmetics of how the gun or rifle looks.. These semi- autos look cool and scarry at the same time.. But in reality no faster than those without folding stocks, pistol grips, and high cap mag's.. This is a "Feel Good Only" politics for all those non-gun owners. Where concealed carried law bidding citizens have the freedom and rights to self defense, crime has gone down.. Where citizens have no rights to carry and defend themselfs.. Crime has gone way up... Chicago, Washington D.C., New York City, Los Angeles, CA. The one thing in common with all these shooting is they take place in " Gun Free Zones." FUZZY HEADED THINKING! BY FUZZY HEADED PEOPLE...

America does not have a gun problem. It has a violence problem. Oakland, CA, is run by gangs and the police have no answer to the threat. Police in Detriot have posted "Enter (the city) At Your Own Risk" signs. Obamaville, aka Chicago, is a fitting homicide capital of the planet inasmuch as President Homicide kicked off his presidential bid in the home of an unrepentant terrorist who is married to an unrepentant terrorist.

YOUR guns controlled by SOFT ON CRIME liberals? Think real effin hard about that.

But of course Obama uses another 23 executive 'actions' to do it anyway-but doesn't say what they are. We're heading towards his dictatorship-as if congress can do anything-He put Biden & gun task force on ways to bypass congress.

& all this talk-what about what they did concerning Benghazi? No help for requested security upgrades....no help at all...

O'Liars 23 executive orders re; gun control
    1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system. * Oh, you mean do what the agencies have been supposed to be doing all along.
    2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system. * The maze of laws and regulations belched out by Congress and the Executive branch each year, and which we underwhelmingly support, have a deleterious impact on background checks, as they do with accomplishing anything in this country.
    3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.
    * Fall in line States, or we will deprive you of Federal money.
    4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks. * Barack Husseign Obama can start with the Fast and Furious gunrunning scheme to the Mexican drug dealers that he implemented.

    4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks. * Barack Husseign Obama can start with the Fast and Furious gunrunning scheme to the Mexican drug dealers that he implemented.
    5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun. * In other words grant them a power they already have in every state.
    6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers. * File 13 awaits those letters.
    7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign. * Put the NRA in charge of it. They have been running gun safety courses since the 19th century.
    8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission). * A review in search of a problem. Guns are very safe, ill-trained or careless owners, not so much.
    9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations. * Something routinely done in virtually every jurisdiction in the United States.
    10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement. * Something else for local cops to ignore. The paper churned out by the Feds to local law enforcement would take up a large part of their time if they actually paid attention to most of it, which they don’t.
    11. Nominate an ATF director. * Having a permanent director as opposed to the interim director who has served since 2011 and who Obama has nominated will make all the difference in the world for that troubled agency...NOT!
    12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations. * Any “first responders” who already do not have plans to deal with a shooter should be fired on the spot. More useless training to provide a dog and pony show for the public.
    13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime. * This ranks with saying we are going to try really, really hard to do the job that we should have been doing all along.
    14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence. * Moral and law enforcement problems transformed into a medical problem.
    15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies * We have had these devices called safeties and locked gun cabinets for a very long time Mr. Attorney General, so save yourself the work.
    16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes. * Because we always look for advice on home defense from doctors or should they now be called federal snitches?
    17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities. * Something they already know, since they are covered by state mandatory reporting laws now.
    18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers. * Yeah, that is the same proposal that liberals went berserk over when the head of the NRA made it a month ago! One-third of schools already have armed guards and/or cops in them.
    19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education. * Maybe not advertising that they are gun free zones, (Free Kill Zones) so that every loon knows they will be a happy hunting ground?
    20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover. * We will overlook the fact that most mass shooters have received mental health care that did not prevent their rampages.
    21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges. * In the words of Rahm Emanuel, never let a crisis go to waste.
    22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations. * Did Rahm Emanuel write some of these 23 edicts?
    23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health. *Because they have been so successful at running Obamacare and the Department of Education that they have plenty of time to talk about better living through more liberal progressive head shrinking.

Summary of O'Liars 23 Edicts; Just more BS about reissuing laws that are already on the books & making government do their fu*king job following these laws that they were suppose to be doing in the first place.

You're welcome. Sadly it gets worse. Now Obama & DHS want 7,000 AR-15's. The same weapons that Feinstein wants to ban for us lowly, law abiding civillians. Add the AR-15's to the millions of rounds of ammo the gov just purchased & it makes you wonder just who they're going to be assaulting... Their excuse is "self defense" but they state that citizens don't need those same weapons for "self defense"...WTF?

Personally, I think the 'aim' of obami is to turn those guns against the law abiding citizens in the long run. Why else would he be doing all this? He's trying to be a dictator-trying to dismantle the Constitution, trying to make one party, instead of 2(so there can be no opposing for checks & balances-no Republicans to oppose democrats), etc. I wouldn't doubt he's 'dreaming' of a takeover eventually. He's putting lots of czars in place that have no restriction on tenure, same with some of these people he's putting in charge of gun control...

i true believe and want tobe proven right or wrong, most gun violance doesnt happen from a weapon bought and registered correctly.

by regulating and limiting americas right to weapons, this makes them vaurnable to street gangs, mobs, home grown bullies, or any one with a missing screw in thier head.

having a legally registered gun is like buying a forclosed cheap home, i cant believe the goverment is going to make another mistake and steal the american dream away from the people.

Enforcing existing laws is a good start and then have substantive discussions as a follow up. It is bad policy to add laws quickly in the wake of a tragedy. You get bad unenforceable laws and unintended consequenses. Obama has spurrred the largest increase in gun and ammo sales in history. Insincere political posturing and power grabbing executive orders make the problem worse. The media turning mass murderers into celebrities is more likely to incite the next violence than gun laws.

I agree, that and the law enforcement officers hands being tied to the point that they cannot arrest the criminals and keep them in jail.

In Chicago, 466 kids under 18 were killed in 2012, and no one said a word cause it was all unregistered guns and thugs.

Legal gun owners commit very few crimes, BUT since lawyers and judges keep letting the criminals get away with it, it will just keep happening. As long as a thug can buy a gun, it will keep happening, limiting the citizens right to bear arms, is just making us targets.

The Constitution says nothing about personal guns. Actually, historically, the Founding Fathers put the 2nd amendment in meaning that the STATES could have organized militias. It wasn't until the 1960's when people started applying the 2nd amendment to personal guns. So, gun laws are not unconstitutional.

Pay particular attention to the first 5 lines in the 3rd paragraph

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

The Second Amendment (Amendment II) to the United States Constitution is the part of the United States Bill of Rights that protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, along with the rest of the Bill of Rights.

In 2008 and 2010, the Supreme Court issued two landmark decisions concerning the Second Amendment. In District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008), the Court ruled that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm, unconnected to service in a militia[1][2] and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home. In dicta, the Court listed many longstanding prohibitions and restrictions on firearms possession as being consistent with the Second Amendment.[3] In McDonald v. Chicago, 561 U.S. 3025 (2010), the Court ruled that the Second Amendment limits state and local governments to the same extent that it limits the federal government.[4]

Why make more laws? They can't enforce the ones they have now, it is already against the law for criminals and the mentally ill to own, buy or possess firearms, here's a hint, the criminals and mentally ill do NOT follow the laws that exist now, what makes anyone believe they will follow any new laws? There are plenty of "gun free zones", places where law abiding citizens are now allowed to carry their firearms, here's another hint, these are the places where the criminals and mentally ill go to commit their massacres, they go to a place where it is practically guaranteed that there will be NO ONE able to defend themselves. You never hear of criminals or the mentally ill going to a practice range, a gun shop, gun show or police station and attempting to shoot people.

More gun laws are only going to make it harder for the law abiding citizens to own, buy or possess a firearm, it is NOT going to slow down the criminals or mentally ill from getting weapons.

Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late! The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson. With guns, we are 'citizens'. Without them, we are 'subjects'.During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED! SWITZERLAND HAS THE LOWEST GUN RELATED CRIME RATE OF ANY CIVILIZED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!! IT'S A NO BRAINER!DON'T LET OUR GOVERNMENT WASTE MILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE ALL LAW ABIDING CITIZENS AN EASY TARGET. Spread the word everywhere you can that you are a firm believer in the 2nd Amendment! It's time to speak loud before they try to silence and disarm us.You're not imagining it, history shows that governments always manipulate tragedies to attempt to disarm the people.

    Defense Authorization Act
this new bill, which passed the Senate with an alarming majority, allows the military to arrest American citizens on American soil and keep them without trial. It’s being called the “America the Battlefield” bill, because it treats your front yard like a battlefield — and every citizen like a potential enemy. It basically puts a giant asterisk next to the Bill of Rights saying, “unless we don’t feel like it,” and coupled with the Patriot Act disolves most of the bill of rights.

You have no idea, not even the slightest concept of the kind of human being that I am...so, your attack on my right to vote and/or freedom of speech is an embarrassment to you! Someone should have taught you not to judge people you don't know...or..at least to have some manners when addressing someone you don't know.

Now to the meat...if you would have read my post carefully you would have seen that I did not call Emperor Obama "Hitler" as many others have done...nor...did I even actually compare him to Hitler. All I said was that his using kids for the emotional/PR value to tug at heartstrings, and to distract people from his true agenda REMINDED me of old newreels of Hitler performing similarly as he was issuing edicts that eventually led to his becoming dictator.

Wise people have always warned that if we don't pay attention to the mistakes from the past...we are doomed to repeat them. Well, one of the first things that Hitler did when he took office was called for tight gun controls and gun registration...which in short order led to a nationwide seizure of those registered weapons so that the people could not resist his overthrowing the government. Maybe none of that would happen in America, but history shows that it has happened time and again!

Oh, and I don't know why liberals think that conservatives all listen to Fox News, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh like mindless sheep when nothing could be further from the truth! I am fully capable of making my own mind up on the issues...thank you very much!

Toughening gun laws doesn't mean banning them like some make it seems. More screenings, ban on large magazines, assault weapon bans, and make semi auto matic weapons either fire slower or ban them. Large magazines and semi auto matic weapons are meant for killing plain and simple. And don't compare guns to things that aren't guns because that's apples to oranges.
