The US Post Office is the public option. Take that away and watch how fast UPS and FedEx raise their rates.

Congress needs to get out USPS' way and let them deal with their dire straits of major volume losses... shrink to fit, and drop absurd prepayment sof retirement benefits for employees they haven't hired yet. That wacky idea was in the last postal reform bill.
Every time USPS wants to close a money-losing branch, local Pols wail that that will kill the town, even though the town sends few letters, and USPS will continue to deliver, just not from a local facility. Imagine if McDonalds were forced to open 10,000+ more stores so no one ever had to drive to get to one. They'd go bankrupt with excessive costs.

Maybe, but I wonder if the deal would include UPS taking on postal employees that are beneath their standards and with wages and benefits different than their own union. I am not sure whether to include FedEx or not, because they seem to use so many private contractors as drivers.

I took a picture of the mailmans truck the other day just to have one to show my great grandchildren. I figure the post office is on it's last days. Kind of sad when you think of the way it was built in this country.

When you can't win on the truth, you can always resort to FUD, fear, uncertainty, and doubt. The fact that there are at least three companies that could handle it (you forgot DHL) and scads of local companies and couriers, then true competition will win for all involved. The only way for FedEx and UPS to be able to price fix, is if the government got involved with regulations, taxes, etc.

    $4.00 postage for a letter ? $10.00 a pound for packages ?
Being told to get your mail / packages at the nearest Parcel center as delivery was missed. That is what comes without the USPS .

If USPS was allowed to simply raise rates for mail to cover costs and quick begging for pennies it would not have it's current troubles.
USPS still offers the best service available at the lowest cost for individuals and small business.

Why would you rather pay the post office and not pay United Parcel Service. You're saying if UPS takes over the service they will go up on postage. You sound like you think that would be wrong. But then you sound like you approve of the post office raising their prices. It can start to hurt when you try to stand on both sides of the fince.

Used to ship a lot of small packages . UPS was a multiple from 2 to 6 times the cost .
Allowing the Post office to increase first class postage by 100% percent rather than playing around with a penny a year later or what % that needs to be viable .
USPS needs to raise prices to remain fiscally viable .
Raising prices to avoid bankruptcy is sensible , doesn't mean they need to be the highest price in town .

Its a toss up, depending on what is failure and who defines it! You can regulate the fire out of a burning anything, stove, grill, it is used for heating things up... The USPS is run by politics... If they cut back where there is more expenditures and open more PO Boxes where there is a slight charge, this would save on fuel cost and added time between drives and frankly, I just because political myself, just adding that suggestion! Maybe a run for the 'house' then?

USPS is in a nether world where they must function as a private business , but, Bureaucrats decide what market value is .
When postal rates go up. Debating for 8 months to raise a penny is ignorant .

Double the price and be done with it . Even at a Dollar a letter it would still be a fraction of what UPS or FED EX will charge .

The infrastructure and sheer number of jobs that would be lost would be disastrous! I'm not a fan of bailouts, but the Postal service can be restructured with a private company taking over without all the Union contacts that plague the public sector jobs! Get the Government out of the mail business and it'll work itself into a mega-business moneymaker and job creator! Government run business is contrary to what it was intended to do!
