It's not a threat, and if we normalize relations, it could lead to a more democratic govt in Cuba

No. Cuba's terrible human-rights record cannot be ignored.

Until they hang the Castros, set up free elections and banish Communism, they can stew in their own juice.

It is stupid for us to be so close to Cuba and not have relations with them. The Soviets pointed missiles at us too, and we still have relations with them.

Was that wishful thinking or a Freudian slip? There is no more Soviet Union; Reagan set the Russian people free!

Reagan had nothing to do with it. That system was close to collapsing long before Reagan arrived.

As far as no more Soviet Union, we made nice with them BEFORE they went the way of history and are still in a 'friendly' status with the now former republics.

There is no benefit for our nation. Cuba is nothing.

I don't totally agree with that yes answer. You should study history, Russian society and Russian politics a little better. And use multiple sources, not just one.

We should have normalized relations after Kennedy...Castro and Cuba could have been subverted easily with consumer goods...the only people that were hurt by the boycott were the Cuban people, the only people enpowered were Castro and his cronies...embargoes don't work, unless you go to war...peace time embargoes are bullsh*t

Its really quite stupid not to... Shoot negotiate a contract to allow them to put in a KFC, a BK Lounge and some other crappy fast food...and before you know it...voila...democracy! When that happens maybe most of the Cubans in Miami...the ones who rant and rave about "freeing Cuba" and never doing anything will start a reverse flotilla and go back to Havana and live happily ever after.

You all do realize the Soviet Union doesn't exist, correct?

Where did anyone say it does?

And the leadership in CUBA...really doesn't want the US to be its friend. Castro has always just thumbed his nose at the US.

Depending on what you mean by normalize... There's about 192 countries out there. It really bothers me that we invest money into countries that treat their citizens, other countries and us terribly, rather than appreciating the countries that work with their people, other countries, treat us very well and have the same civilized beliefs as us. Acceptance of the horrendous and ignoring those instantly who are good, no. However

Reagan's "tear down this wall" speech was awesome.

In the "tear down this wall" part, he was directly addressing the leader of the USSR -- with which we had normalized relations during the entire Cold War.

The USSR, with which we had normalized relations, no longer exists. Communist Cuba, which we do not have normalized relations, still does. I don't think that's a coincidence.

Cuba's human rights record is no worse than that of the Soviet Union, PRC, or China, which all enjoy diplomatic relations.

You don't change people's attitudes by blocking them--on Sodahead or in real life.

True, but I think after sixty years or so we could have found a balance. :-)
