Should the United States and Mexico take steps to merge the two nations into one?...

I think this might be something worth considering since the US is turning to a Mexico anyhow. But for reasons of acquiring the natural resources, if nothing else. And the added size would bode well for us on the world stage.

But only is Mexico and the UK (our little foreign, European colony that speaks funny English) become the 51st and 52nd states. No way we could screw them up any worse than they already are...

Can't wait to see the comments I get on this...

No, but it is already set up to do so in the future.

After reading the responses many people don't understand why it would happen. Like the European union brought many countries under a common gov, so would we. It would be much easier to meld the unions together to make a global government over all nations.

I just remembered this EO and the North American Union

If they can't get their government and cartels under control, we certainly don't need to meld with them. It's bad enough we can't seem to keep five year old Mexicans from sneaking across our border.

Talk of a North American Union, working behind the scenes to create it, and even talk of a common currency have been on the table for years. Of course, it went through the "conspiracy theory" stage, where people denied it, but now it's out in the open. The super highway through the center of the country, disappearing trade barriers, no respected borders, etc. I could see an invasion and coup in Mexico by the United States before a peaceful agreement, as the people of the U.S. wouldn't go for it I don't believe. We already have no say, making the "union" bigger and the government even more out of touch and gigantic isn't something most of us want I would think.

Mexicans don't want to merge with America. Are you seeing this from an American point of view or from a Mexican point of view?

I broke out laughing when I read the question. I'm not an American or a Mexican but do you think Mexico would hand itself over lock, stock and sombrero to the U.S. after the long nasty history your two countries have had together. Yes I'm sure the drug cartels would love to be able to ship their drugs north without having to go across a pesky boarder and I'm sure the U.S. government would love the fact that it would completely solve the illegal alien problem as they now would be all Americans.
Sorry but your stuck with the size you are in North America and have ZERO chance of expanding because as patriotic as Americans are you will find the Mexicans love their country equally and if you look north of your boarder the Canadians are the same.

I don't doubt the stat. But what I'm saying is if you dropped the boarder tomorrow you would have a large amount coming into the States but the majority of the 111 million Mexicans wouldn't have any interest in moving to the U.S. They love their country equally as much as you love yours and would not have the slightest interest in handing it over to a foreign country.

I travel in the States all the time on holidays the people are nice, the country is great, your government is a bit weird (but that's your problem), and I enjoy the trip but I have no interest in moving their. That's not a knock against the U.S. its just that I love my country (Canada) just as any American loves theirs. Any attempt at amalgamation in North America would be seen internationally as the big bully beating up on the little guy and results would be disastrous.

I would be totally shocked if they did vote yes I guess its because I know if they ever did run a referendum or poll on the subject in Canada it would never pass.

I know the Turks and Caicos in the Caribbean has been trying to join Canada for almost a hundred years but the Canadian government has been reluctant on the idea as they feel Ottawa would look too much like a neocolonial power. Personally I think it would be a hell of an idea to have a Province in the Caribbean great for vacations.

And we'll have to add another 112 million people to Obamacare not to mention all the other social programs. Just think about all the new bureaucracies this will spawn. I can't think of a worse plan.

Their Croney-Capitalism has ruined them. Once a great Republic, Mexico has become like most other Lati American countrys. An exercise in Feudal Politics, the most corrupt kind of system.

    Should have been other.

I have actually thought of this as a solution to the illegal immigrant problem.

What we could do is annex mexico and make half part of california and half part of new mexico.

We get rid of the crooks and dope dealers from both countries.
Mexico gets hot dogs we get tacos
Mexico gets Jennifer Anniston we get Selma Hayek
Mexico gets coors light we get corona

We might have a shot at a judeo christian majority again in this country.

There is some serious merit to this idea. The key is kicking all the crooks in both countries out.

You think we have problems now? Please, the drug cartels would take over. Our POTUS is giving tIhem guns, what do you think they would do if we had open borders? We have enough Mexicans living off our taxes. That would just make it worse. Sorry if that sounds harsh but as it stands now Illegals have more rights in AMERICA than AMERICAN CITIZENS. When an American Citizen can't get SS or SSI or help from Welfare but the illegals get cash and foodstamps something is very wrong.
