Should the Southern Poverty Law Center be classified as a hate group?

They are an amazing and necessary organization. They've saved so many lives and keep track of serious hate groups. I donate to them and hope they keep up their work for a very long time.

The SPLC is a valuable organization that's fighting against racism and extremism in this country.

And anyone who believes this has fallen victim to groups who use propaganda to further their bigoted agendas.

The funny thing is this.....If the SPLC had more teeth....they seem to be watching the right crazies...but have no way of stopping them.

Absolutely not, and to imply that they should be classified as such shows how ignorant you are about what their mission actually is. The Southern Poverty Law Center monitors hate groups and extremists throughout the United States and exposes their activities to law enforcement agencies, the media and the public.

There has to be someone to keep track of the various and sundry hat groups in this country. Some place to keep and eye on them and warn us of their actions. To deny these groups exist is disingenuous at best. I looked at what was listed for my home state, and they are right on the $$. And there are other groups I might have expected to see there and didn't, so they aren't THAT gung ho to stretch a point.

My take is, if you see them as a hate group....which group they list do you identify with?

Only way to be sure YOU will never be called a HATE GROUP?

I'll take your response for what it was -- profound ignorance. The SPLC has filed lawsuits against racist groups for decades, and I completely support their work. Fighting racism isn't divisive unless, of course, you're one of the racists the SPLC regularly identifies. That you falsely believe the SPLC is a hate group proves, I suppose, that Faux News efforts to make right wingers as dumb as a bag of rocks is working.

Simple fact they are promoting the hate. So that means they are a hate group.

They are pointing out hate. You cannot ignore it and hope it goes away.

I think they disemminate a lot of untrue information and it is only a matter of time before some one is injured or killed because of it. This group has no right (or the basic intelligence) to classify groups they disagree with as hate groups and then get the Government to scrutinize them If these groups are dangerous the FBI and local law enforcement know that. My particular complaint with them is the article on their website about Celtic Cross tattoos. This organization took it upon themselves to label these tattoos as White supremacist tattoos despite the fact that millions of Irish Americans have these tattoos for cultural and religious reasons, myself included. They have since added a very mealy mouthed disclaimer. The article should be removed before someone is hurt.

Absolutely! This organization has overstepped its bounds and has falsely labeled any group disagreeing with government policy as a "hate group". I'm surprised that none of the people associated with this misnamed organization have been assassinated or their headquarters bombed. I'm sure they've had their share of death threats.

I filled a law suit in the Florida 10th judicial district charging the SPLC with stalking and terrorization. I'm hoping to get a court hearing.
