He voted AGAINST the 1964 Civil Rights bill and you call him a "very good, non-bigoted liberal southern" Democrat????
The myth about the southern Democrats becoming Republican is just that; a myth. All but two of the Dixiecrats who voted against the Civil Rights Act remained Democrats to their death. (like Albert Gore) Most of the districts that elected those Democrats remain Democratic.
The South has gone Republican through the years following the CRA. The South has also integrated in case you didn't notice. They even elect black folks into high offices now! Cross burning and lynchings pretty much died out when the Democrats left the Klan.
The old Southern Democrat racists like Bull Connor died and were replaced by more open minded people, some of whom are Republicans.

Think for a minute. Why would racist Democrats switch to a party that was more in favor of Civil Rights for blacks than their own party?

I take it you read up on Bull Connor as I recommended and that's why you haven't replied to me.
