Of course. The hiker took a risk. Don't punish the animals. I am sorry he was killed though.

Put that bear in the oval office with Obama & Michele. Give both O & M a pair of finger nail clippers. Lock all of the doors and windows, and make sure that the bear is hungry and angry!

No. Best thing to do is tranquilize it, and move it to a different range. If it shows up again in the same area and attacks again, then you'd have to consider putting it down.

I'm not %100 sure about this and anyone who actually knows the rule please feel free to correct me, but, I thought that once a wild animal was responsible for a human death, it had to be destroyed.

That happened not too far away from where I lived last summer...

There were a couple of folks killed, in separate incidents,

and I had to think back about which one this was ~

I've been workin'an'livin' here off and on,

since 1992, and learned right away

where to go, an'what to do...

    But you never know

    with bears, so

    I stay outta

    the way

    just in

    case

    ;p

You aren't very smart if you hike in the woods where there are Grizzlies. They are very unpredictable, especially when they have cubs. Sad event for the family........

There were warning signs at the park saying to stay out of the grizzly bear areas. People break the rules so they can see the bears. He knew the risk and did it anyway. She was protecting her young ones.

Anywhere, in Yellowstone, is Griz Country,

And these hikers did nothing wrong...

They were on marked trails ~

The bear did nothing wrong, either,

as she had her cubs nearby...

just poor timing for all ;p

They should have park rangers who monitor the areas and post signs if cubs are in particular areas. Very tragic accident though.

Bear attacks on humans are rare, compared to human attacks on bears. It is well known that bears will attack if they feel their offspring are threatened, many wild animals will.
It is sad and unfortunate that this momma bear killed a man who simply ignored warnings and signs in hiking, and not one of the idiots like Ted Nugent, who delights in killing wild animals in their own habitats.

I live in an area that has a bear problem as well. When bears attack humans, they have to be put down. In some areas, you can now shoot bears that come on your property, that is how bad the problem is becoming.

If stupid people kept their garbage in a building and did not put out bird seed in warm weather, this would not happen. Bears rarely attack humans unless to protect cubs. Are we so dumb that we cannot learn how to be aware of bears and take precautions? If one comes on your property, go inside and it will leave.

You make a point. But when you have more bears than you can count, that is not always true. When I go hiking, I make sure there are no fish doing a run up the river/creek I would be by. But still in some places there are way to many bears for the area, and human and bears running into each other are becoming more frequent.

You sound very smart and I never thought of the fish in the creek. My husband likes to fish. I will tell him. We have a mother and two cubs right now in our lower woods, so I make sure no one goes hiking in there. So we miss out on the woods this summer; it will be there next year and there will not be any encounters.

The worst outcome would be to stumble upon a bear with his/her kill, that is also a very bad situation. And make noise while out in the woods, the Bears would stay away from the noise
