And I say that in a totally nonsexual way. It'd have been awesome.
He wasn't an atheist.
The BSA contends that these policies are essential in its mission to instill in young people the values of the Scout Oath and Law.[1][2]
The organization's legal right to have these policies has been upheld repeatedly by both state and federal courts. In Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, the Supreme Court of the United States has affirmed that as a private organization, the BSA can set its own membership standards. The BSA's policies have been legally challenged but have not been found to constitute illegal discrimination; as a private organization in the United States the BSA has the right to freedom of association,[3] as determined in Boy Scouts of America v. Dale.[4] In recent years, the policy disputes have led to litigation over the terms under which the BSA can access governmental resources including public lands.

Membership in SpiralScouts, for children and leaders, is open to all who are willing to take part in this very hands-on organization, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, physical limitations, or any other similar condition. We believe that personal orientations are just that—personal—and that only experience, skill, and the safety of our children should determine the suitability of any individual as a SpiralScouts leader.
That means that if you keep your private life private there is no issue. I know of a few Scouts and Scouters who are gay. They just don't discuss it with Scouts. Don't ask, don't tell.
No intelligent person here has equated homosexuality with pedophilia. That argument is setting up a straw man.
The real reason the Scouts do not allow openly gay leaders is due, in most part to the beliefs of Scouts' main sponsors which are religious institutions. Loss of these sponsors would decimate Scouting.
If a child has two gay parents it's not an issue.
If a Scout leader has a same sex partner who comes around and is introduced as "a friend" it's STILL not an issue.
It's only if the leader's same sex partner is introduced as a boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse, etc that it's a problem.
(One of our Troop's leaders brought his boyfriend to a Troop dinner and introduced him as "my partner". Nobody batted an eyelash.)
With 54% of Americans tolerant of gays to the point of supporting gay marriage I would think that my Troop's attitude is not that rare.
