Should Taxi Drivers Be Fined for Aiding Prostitutes?

New York City cabbies will be a lot more reluctant to transport sex workers now that Mayor Michael Bloomberg has signed a new bill that will heavily penalize the act. According to The Frisky, the harsh penalties won't hit until the second offense -- then they hit hard. The second time a NYC taxi driver is convicted of knowingly transporting a prostitute, it's a whopping $10,000 fine.

However, there are some rather obvious catches. Cabbies cannot be expected to make a judgment call based on appearance, so it will probably be difficult for law enforcement to make a case against the drivers. For that reason, critics of the law are concerned that it will force drivers to discriminate against anyone they feel might possibly be a prostitute. Do you think the law is fair?

    For starters there is the safety issue. Prostitutes are at higher risk of attack, assault abuse and prohibiting them from using a taxi for transportation increases that risk and WILL open the city up to lawsuits the very next time a prostitute is attacked as any decent lawyer can argue the city is liable.

    Secondly it is absurd to expect the cab drivers to interrogate their customers - "Yes, ma'am - excuse me but I must ask, are you a prostitute?" LMAO

    Absolutely not! How is it the their fault? They have one job: to get people where they need to go. It's not their issue to deal with. If a person does something illegal like prostituting themselves, they're the one who should get punished.

    Cabs shouldn't discriminate, and as someone else mentioned, in the end it's safer for them. I don't want anyone to lose their life or get abducted.

    So, it's basically a law that allows cab drivers to freely discriminate. And, it puts sex trade workers in danger by requiring them to get around using other methods, like hitch-hiking.

    Huh? How is this supposed to work? I was not aware of this problem. NYC does not have the classic looking "street walkers" anymore, unless you go way out to Hunts Point in the Bronx (so I've heard).

    Absolutely NOT...Lets get this nonsense stopped and make the world's oldest profession LEGAL. Regulate it health wise, tax it, restrict it to certain areas preferably away from places of worship and schools, put an age requirement on both the John's and ladies of the evening with serious punishment to the establishment for age violations of either, save $$$$ on police and court fees and move on to more important problems with our society, like poverty, children's health and welfare, senior citizen issues, jobs, the economy, national security, the environment and education.....

    Doesn't this then give Cab drivers the right to refuse to pick up anyone? All they have to say is, "they look like a prostitute", and how can anyone say different?

    Prostitutes are human beings. I am convinced that the great majority of them is forced to do such a job. They should first fight against organised crime and not against victims!
