Should Taxi Drivers Be Fined for Aiding Prostitutes?

New York City cabbies will be a lot more reluctant to transport sex workers now that Mayor Michael Bloomberg has signed a new bill that will heavily penalize the act. According to The Frisky, the harsh penalties won't hit until the second offense -- then they hit hard. The second time a NYC taxi driver is convicted of knowingly transporting a prostitute, it's a whopping $10,000 fine.

However, there are some rather obvious catches. Cabbies cannot be expected to make a judgment call based on appearance, so it will probably be difficult for law enforcement to make a case against the drivers. For that reason, critics of the law are concerned that it will force drivers to discriminate against anyone they feel might possibly be a prostitute. Do you think the law is fair?

That's totally dum. Bloomberg is getting dummer and dummer by the second. First he banned big cups which I believe was a way to make people spend more. Now the cab drivers are to police their customers wow! Can you new yorkers say recall?

Unless the cabbie is her pimp, I dot see why they should care where she is going. It's not like you get into a cab and explain the purpose of your trip...

They are both in the service industry. Why would a cabby ask for someones occupation?

First off, how are they supposed to know who is and is not a hooker ? The ONLY way to be fair is to ask EVERY person before they get in if they are a hooker ! Of course everyone will be completely honest ! Second, as soon as they ask I am guessing they will be losing a fare so after a few days will be fired ! Great idea Bloomberg !

This no doubt has a little to do with the cabbies helping (pimping) the prostitutes. Seems too, that this is not about a person who happens to be a prostitute needing a ride to the corner grocery for a loaf of bread.

Picture in your mind a number line between 0 and 100. Place an asterisk on that point of the line where you think government has a 'right' to control (own) the lives of others.

Since WHEN did it become morally acceptable for person/mob A to tell individual B what s/he can do with his or her own damned body!?

When said person engages in actions that create a public health/safety hazard. You are free to engage in risky behavior, but you are not free to endanger others in the process.

I agree. Thing is, fining cabbies for 'aiding' 'prostitutes' hardly constitutes a response to public endangerment--any more so than aiding them in the first place is public endangerment. What PROSTITUTES themselves might do may constitute public endangerment, but there are already laws on the books to cover that. This was an attempt on the part of Bloomberg to turn already beleaguered cabbies into police men/women without the pay or the training.

Why is it that we always try to make everything someone elses fault. If a prostitute is working - she the the man she is with are the onlyones that should be arrested or fined or anything and even that makes no sense. Women have been selling it since the dawn of time - who cares - clean it up make it legal and get the kids out of the business.

She (the prostitute) may not even be "working". A case could be made that the driver should be fined if it could be proven that she's going to meet a John, but absent proof of that, she could just be going to a friend's house. They do have friends, most of them.

Opinion Michael Bloomberg law contradicts a law known as deprivation of service if he or she shows the cab driver cash in hand then the cabbie and the citizen, or rather both citizens should be able to go on when their daily routine! As long as there are consenting adults then their activities are none of anybodies business.

This is ridiculous! How can a human being support such discrimination of others? All of you that voted YES, are some wanna-be-righteous, stuck up, idiots! You can not expect a tired azz taxi driver, that barely sees out his glossed window from the front seat, to honestly JUDGE if someone is a prostitute. OH, I get it....if they are dressed a par, please do not take them anywhere. What about the "high-class escorts". Should they just NOT transport those that LOOK poor, and unattractive, with a mini skirt? What about the blond in a business suit? OK, I get it, she is going on a business trip. You people are so ignorant, sitting in your living rooms on the computer, thinking you are better than everyone else. ANY and EVERYONE has the right to transportation, provided that they are able to PAY for it. They could be getting transported from a dangerous situation. OK, I get it. Lets make them stay on the street and get pulled in a car, beat up, robbed, and raped. How about some woman that goes on a date (which may very well be dressed like a prostitute, escapes from a bad situation, and tries to take a taxi home and then try to plead her case that she is not a prostitute, in order to get a ride home). Lets just see how many women sue the New York government over this one, ...

Lets just see how many women sue the New York government over this one, when they are denied transportation over the way they are dressed and/or delayed from an important engagement. How about the policemen DO THEIR OWN JOB. They should just put a camera on the stroll and go after each prostitute one by one (althought I honestly believe that if they have no other way to survive, and they want to utilize their body parts as a way of survival, it's their bodies, and they should be able to profit off it, if it is not hurting anyone). The government should not be allowed to tell others that they can not profit off their own body. I guess if they gave it up for free, thats ok, "just dont make no money off your own body, just give your sex away for free-eve if that is all you have to offer, we only care if you make money becauese we OWN you and if you profit off money, we deserve a hand in it, because after all, we are your legalized pimps". That's a whold new story, but some of you goody two shoes, will miss the point. Please people, have some compassion, quit throwing stones from your glass houses.

Their job is to transport people.
Prostitutes are people, so they're just doing their job.
