Should Taxi Drivers Be Fined for Aiding Prostitutes?

New York City cabbies will be a lot more reluctant to transport sex workers now that Mayor Michael Bloomberg has signed a new bill that will heavily penalize the act. According to The Frisky, the harsh penalties won't hit until the second offense -- then they hit hard. The second time a NYC taxi driver is convicted of knowingly transporting a prostitute, it's a whopping $10,000 fine.

However, there are some rather obvious catches. Cabbies cannot be expected to make a judgment call based on appearance, so it will probably be difficult for law enforcement to make a case against the drivers. For that reason, critics of the law are concerned that it will force drivers to discriminate against anyone they feel might possibly be a prostitute. Do you think the law is fair?

Does the law cover possible murders'-bank robbers'-ect.? oh look that guy looks like??? don't give him a cab ride? At first one might think this is bogus this post. But let me tell you I don't know what everyone and especially leaders of governments are breathing in; but they are polluting our air severely with a grande gesture of the lack of common sense!

There are so many crazy laws ...written left and right. Canada U.S. and so on.

First off, how are they supposed to know who is and is not a hooker ? The ONLY way to be fair is to ask EVERY person before they get in if they are a hooker ! Of course everyone will be completely honest ! Second, as soon as they ask I am guessing they will be losing a fare so after a few days will be fired ! Great idea Bloomberg !

This no doubt has a little to do with the cabbies helping (pimping) the prostitutes. Seems too, that this is not about a person who happens to be a prostitute needing a ride to the corner grocery for a loaf of bread.

I agree. Thing is, fining cabbies for 'aiding' 'prostitutes' hardly constitutes a response to public endangerment--any more so than aiding them in the first place is public endangerment. What PROSTITUTES themselves might do may constitute public endangerment, but there are already laws on the books to cover that. This was an attempt on the part of Bloomberg to turn already beleaguered cabbies into police men/women without the pay or the training.

Why is it that we always try to make everything someone elses fault. If a prostitute is working - she the the man she is with are the onlyones that should be arrested or fined or anything and even that makes no sense. Women have been selling it since the dawn of time - who cares - clean it up make it legal and get the kids out of the business.

She (the prostitute) may not even be "working". A case could be made that the driver should be fined if it could be proven that she's going to meet a John, but absent proof of that, she could just be going to a friend's house. They do have friends, most of them.

Opinion Michael Bloomberg law contradicts a law known as deprivation of service if he or she shows the cab driver cash in hand then the cabbie and the citizen, or rather both citizens should be able to go on when their daily routine! As long as there are consenting adults then their activities are none of anybodies business.

You can not expect a tired azz taxi driver, that barely sees out his glossed window from the front seat, to honestly JUDGE if someone is a prostitute. OH, I get it....if they are dressed a par, please do not take them anywhere. What about the "high-class escorts". Should they just NOT transport those that LOOK poor, and unattractive, with a mini skirt? What about the blond in a business suit? OK, I get it, she is going on a business trip.
