Should Taxi Drivers Be Fined for Aiding Prostitutes?

New York City cabbies will be a lot more reluctant to transport sex workers now that Mayor Michael Bloomberg has signed a new bill that will heavily penalize the act. According to The Frisky, the harsh penalties won't hit until the second offense -- then they hit hard. The second time a NYC taxi driver is convicted of knowingly transporting a prostitute, it's a whopping $10,000 fine.

However, there are some rather obvious catches. Cabbies cannot be expected to make a judgment call based on appearance, so it will probably be difficult for law enforcement to make a case against the drivers. For that reason, critics of the law are concerned that it will force drivers to discriminate against anyone they feel might possibly be a prostitute. Do you think the law is fair?

    everyone is saying no. thats the easy answer. the passage makes a good point. along with a garanteed rise in bodies found in the gutter. hos will be hos n when their done and is paying for a ride there just a customer. Think of it is way a young female relative of yours just left a club late night in club dress n now she has to walk because of the dumb law

    that's ridiculous! prostitutes are people too. they're just doing their job. it's unfair to prostitutes and to the taxi driver, for how is he/she to know who is or isn't a prostitute?

    If cabbies turned down woman on the premise that they might be hookers then they would turn down most women of a certain age group when they go out on the town.

    you can't really unmake other people's decisions, it's their decision if they wanna be a prostitute, and paying a taxi to drive them to work shouldn't be punished.

    It sounds like this law has been mis-quoted (I hope), It should read that if a driver is soliciting a prostitute IN his cab, not transporting her/him. I think if you are having sex in the cab, that may be questionable, maybe even reprimandable, but what if it's your date? How far can you go before john law wants a piece of your action?

    This is bs just another stab at our freedoms. The way people dress these days how are you suppose to know unless they broadcasts that they are a prostitute? Does this apply to strippers too? WAKE UP AMERICA!!! They are slowly chipping away at your freedoms using crime fighting as an excuse.

    why the cabbies? it makes no sense... why not fine those who put the prostitutes clients? not that I support that but it'll make more sense cos they keep the prostitutes in business.

    I would like to see a study or the statistics showing a need for this bill. Is there any evidence of an organized effort on the part of NYC cabbies to aid and abet prostitution? Bad law will never limit bad acts. While it is every citizens responsibility to aid law enforcement, it is NOT our responsibility to enforce the laws. That would constitute vigilantism.....which is also against the law.

    Typical mindset of a lib/prog politician....passing a law that can't be enforced!! Sort of like mandates that they pass on to states in regard to illegal immigration...There will be lawsuits against cabbies because they refused service to women and yet cabbies will be sued if they refuse service to obvious gangbangers because that is profiling.....

    This is making the cab drive a policeman and this is not something they are equipped to do from their training.

    What is someone is just dressed up for a bridal party or something like that? They are all dressed up in sexy clothes and then they get called a prostitute and denied a ride.

    Better would be to allow prostitutes and regulate them with medical testing and protection if a "John" gets out of line. I have seen prostitution in almost every country I have lived in and even some countries I just visited. You can't legislate morality away because some object to it.
