Should SodaHead Cut Out Questions Without A Point?

james.bowman.146 2012/07/28 07:40:00
SodaHead should just leave everyone alone.
SodaHead should delete questions that are without a point.

I think that SodaHead should delete all these, "RAVE THIS IF YOU THINK OBAMA IS DESTROYING HAPPINESS AMONG..." or "RAVE THIS IF YOU THINK CONSERVATIVES ARE MURDERING..." questions. They have no substance or point. They thrive off of hate. It would be like a talk show where you have two terrible debaters screaming "I LIKE IT!" and "I DON'T LIKE IT!" and after a couple minutes the host says, "and that is all the time we have! Be sure to tune in tomorrow for more anger!"

I'm ok with opinionated people, but when you have 20 demagogues screaming in both directions, no progress is made. We have freedom of speech, but SodaHead still has a right to delete things that are not helpful.

I want to stress that I don't think they should delete partisanship or even plain insults, but they should delete drivel without a point.

Thank you. Please treat each other with respect in this question. I am posting this in the political section because that is where this problem occurs most.

    That wont ever happen.

This site exists to generate money for the owners, and no other reason.

Therefore it doesn't matter to them how inane, moronic or repetitive the questions are, just as long as we keeping clicking away...

Eventually it will overwhelm the base and cause people to leave though.

And new people with only vapid content to contribute will join, and the cycle will keep repeating itself.

They only care about quantity not quality.

    That isnt going to change.

    It is what it is.

I've been here for 2 years; before the stupid levels & points system was implemented.

The overall site content quality was much higher back then, IMO.

But its a free site and we're all here by choice.

No SodaHead fascists, Then they would just have to have more staff, making subjective decisions.

What would be great would be some new features like ignore (don't see posts by certain users) and thumbs down scores, but only for specific posts and questions, not swarming on specific users.

    Hate to be that guy....

Content regardless of nature or meaning behind them = activity = search engine spiders = popularity = revenue for the site.

It wont change. Should they for our sanity? YEAH. Will they - no they would be killing their cash cow. I think Fef and his team are doing a fine enough job as it is considering this entire site is custom programming. lol.

Why do questions have to have a point? sometimes wonderful things are found while wondering aimlessly about the terrain...sure you may have to sift through an ocean of things that mean nothing to you...but every once in awhile....

No. If the question is without a point, then so is everything they say. I don't believe anything people say when they are THAT biased.

Have a question,if you delete these questions without a point, then you would lose all of the self-appointed "experts"

Rave this, if you think that Sodahead has mucked around with questions enough. The solution would be to bring back blog posts. That way you would have two sections: Questions or polls and blogs where you're sharing something (to the point or pointless, depending on who is reading it).

It would be censorship and while I can accept censorship of hateful, pornographic or bullying behaviour, I don't know that I can accept Sodahead deciding which questions are intelligent and which aren't. I would rather do that for myself and just ignore the stupid ones.

I respect that answer. I don't think they should censor hateful behavior, but if the first words are RAVE THIS... then they are obviously spamming.

And so you seem to be saying that spamming is worse than hateful behaviour. I am not sure I agree, but then it is late and I am tired and should be sleeping. Even now any censoring that goes on is generally done when sodahead members flag a post or poll, thus bringing it to the attention of the sodahead staff. There is much debate amongst members about what is acceptable and what isn't but I personally tend to be more bothered by hateful and hurtful polls than stupid spamming ones. Spam can be ignored but ignoring something hateful or hurtful suggests that it is acceptable or that sodahead agrees with the content. I can see why they might choose to remove it.

Yes, spam is annoying. So are the solicitous e-mails most of us women on sodahead get regularly. So is the ignorance and bigotry and small mindedness displayed daily online.

I ignore it just like I ignore the unwanted flyers in my literal mail box.

This is an opinion site and who would decide if an opinion posted is without a point or not?

When the question is, "Why don't liberals understand why gay marriage is a sin?" and the answers are "They are stupid" and "I am too stupid to know why I don't think that" or one which is equally stupid from the other side (both sides hate as much as the other). It is obviously not constructive.

I would agree they are not constructive but those who post those types of opinions would disagree with you on it not having a point. Like I said who draws the lines and where?

SodaHead can decide that. I just worry this site will go down the tracks and turn from a constructive opinion website where ideas can be debated into a graveyard where the only activity is trolls and hateful extremists.

I think it's too late. Have you visited the politics section lately? Even legit questions are full of trolls and hateful extremists.

That's ok because when I check "Most Popular" or whatever it's called, they don't all show up stopping me from seeing actual discussion lol
