Should Sanctuary Communities Be Penalized?

The Frog Princess November 12, 2010 19:40:36
It seems that the federal government, in particular the Department of Justice once again, is squandering our tax dollars. This time in properly dealing with illegal immigration and sanctuary communities.

Last time we checked, the overwhelming majority of Americans (read that as tax payers) opposes the continued presence of illegal aliens in this nation. Keeping that in mind, why has the DOJ been rewarding communities that have established themselves as sanctuaries for illegal immigrants? That's right. The rewards have been coming in the form of grants to these communities commonly known as SCAPP.

This is how it works. These communities are caterwauling about the cost of illegal immigration and at the same time demanding that the federal government reimburse them for their expenses while in the same breath enacting local polices to serve as a magnet to attract these same illegal aliens.

Does that make any sense. It seem to me that the communities who are setting themselves up as sanctuaries for these criminals should be penalized for helping to breah this nation's immigration laws.

I know some of the posters here won't read the article at the link but it might be recommended before inserting that foot in your mouth. It explains a lot more than I have above.

I report, you decide.

With the election of a Republican woman (Susana Martinez) for Governor of New Mexico, the "sanctuary" policies of the previous, Democratic Governor (Bill Richardson) will be repealed.

This is the most idiotic post I have ever read. First of all, if you're reporting on anything, ESPECIALLY the case of illegal immigration, please learn how to speak proper English. "Does that make any sense. It seem to me..." For someone who claims to have a legitimate opinion on anything going on in this country, you certainly don't write like you have lived here very long. Also, to those of you that commented on this, I have just lost all faith in the United States. Many of you are telling these illegals to "speak English" and yet, your posts are littered with misspellings and embarrassing punctuation errors. Get your own language skills together before attacking someone else's. This response has absolutely nothing to do with the issue addressed in the post, but after reading the post and its responses, I will not even merit it with a relevant response. I will say this, however: They don't speak English because they're illegal immigrants. WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE?

this was a pet project that was pushed by the likes of Pelosi and chicken neck Reid and now that we are in the lame duck session these two A$$wipes are pushing for amenstey for Illegal alien`s under the disguise of education.the so called Dream Act these progressive liberal`s are certainly doing everything in there power to destroy this country. if these cities want to be Sanctuary Cities they should have to pay 3 times as much in taxes and see if that don`t change there minds.

"The correct interpretation of the 14th Amendment is that an illegal alien mother is subject to the jurisdiction of her native country, as is her baby.

Over a century ago, The Supreme Court appropriately confirmed this restricted interpretation of Citizenship in the so-called "Slaughter House cases (83 vs 36) (1873) and 112 US94 (1884). In the 1884 Elk v. Wilkins case, the phrase "Subject to its jurisdiction" was interpreted to exclude "children of ministers, consuls, and citizens of foreign states born within the United States, but completely subject to their political jurisdiction and owing their direct and immediate allegiance.

The Court essentially stated that the status of the parents determines the citizenship of the child. To qualify children for birthright citizenship, based on the 14th Amendment, parents must owe "direct and immediate allegiance" to the U.S. and be "completely subject" to its jurisdiction. In other words they must be United States Citizens.

Congress subsequently passed a special Act to grant full citizenship to American Indians who were born within the borders of the United States.

The original intent of the 14th Amendment was clearly not to facilitate illegal aliens defying U.S. law and obtaining citizenship for their offspring, nor obtaining benefits at taxpayers expense. Current estimates indicate there may be between 300,000 and 700,000 anchor babies born each year in the U.S. thus causing illegal alien mothers to add more to the U.S. population each year than immigrants from all sources in an average year before 1965."

"America citizens must be wary of elected politicians voting to illegally extend our generous social benefits to illegal aliens and other criminals."

I wonder if cities set themselves up as havens for other types of illegal activity, will the government pay them for it? If my town decides that it just won't go after car thieves, and consequently car theft goes up, will the feds pay us for doing that? I don't think so, because that would be stupid. So why do they do it in these cases?

Since an illegal aka non-citizen is here against the law (hence the word ILLEGAL) then these cities should be penalized for breaking the federal law by aiding and abetting.

'Sanctuary cities' should be declared illegal by definition.

Well being in Az the whole idea that if you outright harbor them the Feds give you money but, if your state has been having to pay for them for years we get the sound of crickets. This is why I think our state should file suit against the Feds for all costs associated eith the illegals. My reasoning is that they claim the enforcement of the illegals is only in their perview to enforce so, it stands to reason so is the cost on the states, wether through housing them in prisons or their HC at ERs or, them causing damage to people personal property through crime.
Meanwhile I believe that those cities that choose to call themselves Sanctuaries should foot the whole costs themselves and, should have all Federal Dollar or actually our dollars taken from them till they choose to follow the Immigration Laws on the books.

Harboring a criminal is a crime, period. there should be no exception state local or federal. if someone is in America illegally they have broken the law, how can they be trusted to follow the rules after that. it will all change when an illegal breaks into a rich powerful and politicial figures home and kills, rapes or robs them.

These cities are breaking the law and should stop protecting illegals. I do remember when a cop in Katy Tx, stop a illegal and took him in because he jump the fence. The Mexican sued the Katy police dept and won. That needs to stop, there are far too many illegals for just ICE do deal with. They don't have enough boots on the ground. You would think that they would want help from the police.

Yes they should have all Federal funds cut off, like Texas and Wyoming did when they didn't go along with the spending requirements for Federal Highway money.

And yes it does make sense, if you want a cheap labor force or cheaply bought voters, it's a "win-win" for both the Repubs and Demoncrats.

This didn't just happen, as I recall this started under Clinton with the Sanctuary cities, but it may go back to the trouble in El Salvadore and codified under Clinton. The Catholic church even has their hands in up to their cloisters. It is well beyond "life and death protection" of the political assylum for a few as it was when it first was started, nobel, then a money maker. All of the Cities now are Demoncrat run red ink cities with more debt than tax base. What's a few "dead bodies" when compared to the money loss?

Well it has been decided by Obama, and the Justice Department, that anything that has to do with Sanctuary Cities is off limits. That Securing the Border is a No No. That we should sue a State Such as Arizona, because they wanted to do something to control their border. Because the US Government, that is tasked to provide that protection and security has no will to do so. It is more important to them that they gain a voting block, and retain their long over due tenures in Government. Lets by all means not do what is called for in the enumerated powers in the Constitution. Lets say we are, and do nothing. Lets claim the People don't understand, that they are to dumb.
