Should recreational spending by government officials of taxpayers' money be stopped?

For example, an upcoming 9th Circuit Court vacation in a Maui resort, to include snorkeling and sailing.

Or vacation expenses by Michelle Obama, who is only the wife of a government official.

Have many employers give working middle class people not only vacation time from their jobs, but also PAY for their vacation expenses? I don't know of any.

Nor should the employers of government officials [taxpayers] be required to pay for their vacations.

Obama gets 400G's a year president's pay. If that's not enough to allow him to fund his own vacations, I know most of the rest of us would have no problem budgeting that much money.

Government officials should get designated vacation time. And what they do with it should be paid for with their own money.

NO, recreational spending of taxpayers' money by government officials should ...
    CGOrlando
It depends on the circumstances... for instance, is it a real vacation (where no business is conducted, no phone calls taken, etc) or some recreational time combined with something that is legitimate business? Even recreation might not be real recreation... for instance playing golf with the officials from another country where you are discussing diplomatic matters while playing - that doesn't sound like "fun" to me. And... What government official? I know there is some controversy around (for instance) Michelle Obama's trip to Africa with the daughters. However First Ladies have a full schedule of public events and appearances and work on numerous projects - and don't get paid a dime for doing it. The children of a President have to attend numerous trips and events they probably don't enjoy one bit. So if the taxpayers pick up some recreational time I don't have a problem. I worry more about the 12 MILLION DOLLARS A DAY WE HAVE WASTED IN IRAQ (This is not the cost of the war - this is just the money that went "missing" or was wasted). Probably the same with other wars.

It depends with Obama's wife the issue is security. She needs some recreation and she needs to be protected. So that means she needs an entourage of secret service agents.

A lot of executives take vacations disguised as work. Radio commentator Clark Howard brags he takes his staff on vacation so he can write it off. Others go on "business trips" to conventions in nice places at company expense. Sometimes that does involve middle management. I'd assume the 9th is doing one of those numbers. They are an abuse, but it is an abuse by both business and government. Why should we care when business does it. Simple they list the trip as a business expense and write it off on their taxes.

So my real answer would be that with very high officials and their families where there is danger that they might be kidnapped or killed for political reasons then it is appropriate for the government to pay. Everyone else no.

By the way when a congressman or senator comes back to the district and holds constituent meeting I don't consider that vacation I consider that work. Even some of the fact finding trips are justified. Though I would question fact finding at a beach in Hawaii.

I do not believe in recreational expenses for government workers nor for most elected positions. However, since America does not have a royal family to send around the world on good will tours they must use the First Family in that context. They are merely being ambassadors for American like the Queen, Prince Harry, etc. It is better is you have someone who is not political like the royals but you don't so you have to use what you have. The royal family does not have the right to vote of be involved in politics in any capacity. Their job is to serve the people and be unbiases as to which party is in office.

Granted that with the Prez and family, there is always going to be some cost because of secret service, etc., but the vacations themselves or even the recreational stuff as part of an official or diplomatic visit should be not paid by taxpayers. Some of the worst sucking at the public teat is done by politicians, but if you think it's exclusively a liberal OR a conservative thing, you're sadly mistaken. This sort of crap is done by both parties. Let's not forget that politicians can hijack Air Force One, when it's not being used by the president et al, too, and take their trips cost free, tax free, but at high expense to the taxpayers.

I don't know anything about the 9th Circuit Court vacation so I can't comment on that.

But, Michelle Obama isn't "only" the wife of the president. She is the First Lady of the U.S. and as such she has many responsibilities an causes that she must dedicate her time to. In fact, I believe all First Ladies should receive a salary for all the work they do.

When the First Lady and/or the President and their family travel anywhere, it is a major production. They can't just hop a flight at BWI and go to the Bahamas!
