For example, an upcoming 9th Circuit Court vacation in a Maui resort, to include snorkeling and sailing.
Or vacation expenses by Michelle Obama, who is only the wife of a government official.
Have many employers give working middle class people not only vacation time from their jobs, but also PAY for their vacation expenses? I don't know of any.
Nor should the employers of government officials [taxpayers] be required to pay for their vacations.
Obama gets 400G's a year president's pay. If that's not enough to allow him to fund his own vacations, I know most of the rest of us would have no problem budgeting that much money.
Government officials should get designated vacation time. And what they do with it should be paid for with their own money.

Just think what our taxes would be like if there were no perks, no earmarks, no waste, no duplication and no fraud
and especially for those who are 'spouses' .. or 'children' .. or 'grannies' .. (or other relatives/friends/sponsors)
they have NO BUSINESS at all traveling at Taxpayer Expense for any reason at all .. (but especially .. NO VACATIONS .. they do NOT need them!)

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, & our nation was the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world, and Mom, if agreed, stayed home to raise the kids.

A lot of executives take vacations disguised as work. Radio commentator Clark Howard brags he takes his staff on vacation so he can write it off. Others go on "business trips" to conventions in nice places at company expense. Sometimes that does involve middle management. I'd assume the 9th is doing one of those numbers. They are an abuse, but it is an abuse by both business and government. Why should we care when business does it. Simple they list the trip as a business expense and write it off on their taxes.
So my real answer would be that with very high officials and their families where there is danger that they might be kidnapped or killed for political reasons then it is appropriate for the government to pay. Everyone else no.
By the way when a congressman or senator comes back to the district and holds constituent meeting I don't consider that vacation I consider that work. Even some of the fact finding trips are justified. Though I would question fact finding at a beach in Hawaii.

and either way, not on my dime, the issue is who is paying for it ... not that the obomma tribe took a vacation, it is that they spent $$ like a drunk sailor .. and that is a slap in the face to all the honorable sailors....
But, Michelle Obama isn't "only" the wife of the president. She is the First Lady of the U.S. and as such she has many responsibilities an causes that she must dedicate her time to. In fact, I believe all First Ladies should receive a salary for all the work they do.
When the First Lady and/or the President and their family travel anywhere, it is a major production. They can't just hop a flight at BWI and go to the Bahamas! There are all kinds of diplomatic arrangements, the cost of all the Secret Service protection, communication devices, preparation of the facilities they will stay at, etc. They can't just "vacation" like the rest of us.
And you should consider that the President is never "off". Even on "vacation" he is always on duty and in touch with our government officials, the military and foreign governments as well. He doesn't have a 40hr work week. He works all day, into the night and on weekends. And yes, it's expensive. But that's the way it has to be to provide the security for the family and to ensure that the President can be contacted and act on anything that comes up right away.
