Should Porn Industry Go on Hiatus Because of One Person's Syphilis?

According to CBS, only one porn star has tested positive for syphilis, but it has led to the entire adult entertainment industry to grind to a halt until everything is sorted out. An industry group called for a "voluntary moratorium" on making any more films as doctors test other porn stars and try to prevent an outbreak. Do you think the industry is right to go on a hiatus because of one porn star's STD contraction?

JEZEBEL.COM reports:
An adult film actor's positive syphilis test has prompted the entire industry to shut down temporarily while officials test other performers and investigate the possibility of an outbreak.

Actually I think its great of them to temporarily shut things down and check everyone out. It wont take long I'm sure and this way they can be positive they caught all the cases.

Yes . . . permanent hiatus. The porn "industry" is ruining lives, both within the "industry" and outside of it.

In all actuality, this nothing short of respectful, and responsible of the industry. By the way, syphilis can be cured if not in the final stage. Thanks porn, thorn!

If they're going to continue with this kind of employment, I think they should make sure all the actors/actresses are healthy, rather than throwing them under the bus, then having to find a whole new group of people and start the industry over again.

Syphilis isn't nearly the health threat that HIV/AIDS is. It was totally warranted to shut down production until that was sorted out. Since then the Protocols they've put in place should easily alleviate this threat with no real production time having to be lost.

I'm started to wonder if more than half of you people are reading the article, let alone the title. Everyone knows syphilis is contageous right? So one person contracts it. Well where did they get it? And as it is a pornstar's job to sex it up for a living, it's obviously going to get passed along when they get down to it. Now, who wants to make a porno when someone you may have to work with has syphilis? For the safety of all the pornstars they gotta stop production for a little while till it al gets sorted out. It's not forever.

Certainly not. How many billion a year does the porn industry generate? I can't say I know, but it'd be up there with tobacco and alcohol as lucrative vices. They want it to grind to a halt because of a single case. That's like metalworkers stopping work until workplace safety is sorted because one nitwit got a spark in his eye while welding.

Key word here is temporary. It is logical to shut down while the extent of the problem is determined.

How temporary though? They need to be far more precise than that before shutting down an industry. Although temporary, an entire industry being put on hold is still extreme. Given that we're talking about a single case, it would be far more logical to introduce compulsory testing and let the business continue while testing is done.

It is not like this is the first time an industry or business is shut down when something is discovered. When cracks were discovered in planes, whole fleets where grounded. When bacteria was discovered in produce, major recalls were conducted.

I would think it shouldn't take too long to get everyone tested again and to make sure logical procedures are in place. Not familiar with the smut industry so I have no idea what those are. My impression of the smut industry is that the performers can have sex with many different people during the course of a week and probably work for more than one company so if a person does have a STD, it could spread pretty fast.

What they did is just the responsible thing to do. It would be much worse if even more people contracted this disease because the industry did not pay the concern to test the rest of the stars and have it treated. They are going to lose some money because of this but it's the best course of action.

Why is everyone hating on porn so much? If you don't like it, don't watch it.
Plenty of other people enjoy watching it and it has no adverse effect on their lives.

Some people get addicted and that becomes a problem and in some cases, it can break a marriage (that's probably because of a hate of porn from one side or jealousy, in both cases, problems of the individual and not the whole). But those without that problem, yeah, you're right.
  • Any Cadale ... 2012/08/27 03:50:19
    Any
This is true, especially the addiction part. But like you said, when porn breaks up relationships it's usually due to a person's problem with the porn itself, not the spouse. If the person were more open minded towards porn, even if they didn't watch it themselves, it might have avoided unneeded conflict.

Better to take some time off and make sure no one else has it. This way, the people that star in those things can stay healthy. In any case, it's not like there is a shortage of porn out there. People can still amuse themselves.
