Someone has to set their salary. I feel that there should be a law that if there is a salary increase, all politicians who enacted the increase are forever exempt from that increase. Meaning it doesn't take effect until after they leave office.

But actually they don't set their salary. Sometime in the past, Congress passed a piece of legislation that grants Congress and AUTOMATIC pay raise unless Congress takes specific action to vote it down.

We have national elections every two years. Congress should be required to put a referendum item, binding referendum item, on the ballot in every state, any time they want a raise. I wouldn't care, then, if they even claim, as a result of this, that they're cutting government spending.

Members of Congress should have their salaries voted on by the tax paying public. Ditto with their benefits and perks. They would still be on their own for bribes, kick backs and theft.

Absolutely not. Anybody who spends millions of dollars for a $168K a year job is up to no good.
Way overpaid. Even some school district superintendents give themselves raises without the public oversight. No!No!No!

No, they shouldnt be able to, but they routinely do it in every branch of municipal, state and federal government. I think anyone worth a million should not get any salary, perks, expense account , staff or free transportation on our dime. They should pay their own way out of their own pockets, Not ours.

WE ... the CITIZENS who pay the taxes .. should determine their salary ..
and it should be only a token (at best) .. for the time they are actually doing any representation or meeting with constituents that are taxpayers and CITIZENS ..

They arent responsible, or respectful, of the taxpayers tax dollars. I've never seen such blatant and open disregard for the taxpayers in my life.
But, when we allow them to make their own rules....what can we expect?
There should be guillotines erected in DC.

They don't deserve a salary at all, you supposed to get paid for doing your job, they're not. If most politicians worked in the public sector and they had the same track record they'd be fired within a month.

One thought is maybe congress decides pay raises, but they do not go into effect for any sitting member of congress at the time the law was enacted. In other words, you can't write a law that increases your own pay, but the next person to hold your seat.
