Couldn't have anything to do with the recession could it?

They both overspent their budget, one had a retirement plan that was screwed up and a bunch of redevelopment that was not paid out on bonds and also screwed up that was Stockton, I don't know about San Bernadino

I agree but aside from a lack of planning the recession is what has really killed them.

Your most likely right it is a combination of all of it, cannot factually state it was just one two things. I would love to see the paperwork but under FIFO that will be awhile before anyone sees it.

Personally I have always had a "rainy day fund" to get me through most issues in life. Why should it be any different for any other entity.

I retired at 55 everything paid off and owe no one, had 30 years in where I worked and would have been laid off but just retired. We never lived beyond our means, if we couldn't pay for it we didn't buy it, but too many these days have to have their toys, and I am not a conservative, more of a moderate.

When it comes to the almighty buck I am. Having been raised in housing projects with little to eat we all learned to manage our money and only spend on essentials.

I was raised on a farm in Colorado and never short at the table. It's just what we were taught.

Trying to "keep up with the Jonses" will break you at some point.

Poor spending habits? Bad budgeting? Over-inflated contracts? Corruption? People sucking from the Govt. teat? I don't know... is that a good start?

Depends what State the buyer is buying from. Like NJ, there is no Sales Tax on Clothes & Food; when buying via Amazon for example, the Sales Tax is actually dropped.

Only if they are in your state, like on Ebay. How can a vendor from another country charge us sales tax?

HELL NO. It's bad enough that you have to pay shipping and handling, but sales tax too? NO.

There is already a 23% tax included in the price of just about every item you purchase, why tax more?

Let every state collect it's own sales taxes. And quit trying to collect sales taxes from every other state. Be a state that attracts on line as well as brick and mortor retail outlets and you won't be losing any retail sales taxes.

So police and fire protection are unimportant to you? (This is primarily what local sales taxes go for.) Many states have 0 income tax so without sales tax there is virtually no state government income and local folks (counties, cities, school districts, etc...) would need to be ALL user fees and/or property taxes.) This is the primary flaw in the knee jerk anti-tax Tea Party thinking.

We didn't have sales tax untill the 70's here in Jersey, thats the 1970's, and we've always had police and fire protection. But what we didn't have was 28,000 dollar per student education in our cities, where the graduation rate is less then 50%, but I'm sure you think thats money well spent.

Who has $28K per student costs? Education and Health Care are things we do really badly and all we need to do is look North to Canada where they do both less expensively and much more effectively with a highly diverse student base and active teacher's unions. My principal concern with our K-12 education system is that kids just don't spend enough time in instructional hours or days. But so much more than that is broken that I don't know where I'd start. I did see a number of your cities in Jersey at $13K or so which is RIDICULOUS and this is where subcontracting with the Archdiocese makes great sense assuming they agree to some basic religious freedoms.

Not workable, but they could pay a federal excise tax that would go into a fund to be distributed to States. It would have to be chartered as a lock box account though, or Congress would raid it like everything else.

Keep in mind that this merely makes up for shoppers not reporting their out-of-state purchases.

This isn't the right subject for a major attack on taxes, but problem #1 with most of them is that they are mighty hard to avoid. How does one get out of any store without paying sales taxes?

And right there is all the reason anyone needs to ditch the "fair tax" idea. The people should ALWAYS have a choice of what they want to buy from governments at all levels. The income tax is easy to avoid by simply not filing that 1040. Such is a root action available as yet in the Resistance Movement. Starve the Beast!

I have one small vendor in Arizona, (for ecigs) and the sales tax renders it uncompetetive, so I'll go back to buying from out of state. Thus "NO" across the nation.
