Campaign finance laws require disclosing political campaign contributors. President Obama has decided to use this transparency to "out" donors to his political opponent, Mitt Romney. The Obama campaign shamed donors for "betting

against America," and accused them of having a "less-than-reputable" record.
This past week, one of [Obama's] campaign websites posted an item entitled "Behind the curtain: A brief history of Romney's donors." In the post, the Obama campaign named and shamed eight private citizens who had donated to his opponent. Describing the givers as all having "less-than-reputable records," the post went on to make the extraordinary accusations that "quite a few" have also been "on the wrong side of the law" and profiting at "the expense of so many Americans."
Theodore Olson, the former U.S. solicitor general criticized the Obama campaign: "We don't tolerate presidents or people of high power to do these things... When you have the power of the presidency—the power of the IRS, the INS, the Justice Department, the DEA, the SEC—what you have effectively done is put these guys' names up on 'Wanted' posters in government offices."In The Wall Street Journal, Potomac Watch columnist Kimberley Strassel notes Barack Obama's attempts to intimidate contributors to Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.

They aren't attacking anyone. Calling the posting of documented factual information an attack seems to indicate that someone is afraid of the truth, and that the cries about "transparency" are just another example of conservative hypocrisy.

Oops - I meant to vote "All's fair in politics". I'm hate the negative ads that keep turning up in campaigns these days, but so long as the information Obama is using is a matter of public record, I see no problem with "outing" Romney supporters.

Of course, Obama had better make sure each and every major contributor to his campaign is squeaky clean, or it's liable to backfire on him!

Just go to http://fwd4.me/0zRK and you will see that President Obama has identified his bundlers. If Romney or anyone wants to research each one, go for it. If President Obama is using fact about Romney's bundlers then it's not an attack. There is plenty of opportunity for anyone to see Obama's bundlers.

The government requires full disclosure. But Obama 2012 campaign went further to personally attack individual donors to his political opponent. Do you think the president should do that?

Do you think for even one second, if the roles were reversed, the rethuglicons would hesitate an instant to use something like this to launch another smear campaign against Obama that would have him personally running it from his witchdoctor hut in Kenya and wouldn't stop until they had him tied in with the communists, Marxists, KKK, Hitler, global warming, sun spots, back acne, Elvis, Bigfoot, black helicopters, MIB's, the spread of cancer, and Justin Beiber's newest attempt at "music"?

What is the problem with transparency in naming campaign donors? Mitt Romney's superPACs overwhelmed the opposition during the primary season, as they financed the negative TV ads that helped him to the nomination, and yet we are not supposed to know who contributed to his superPAC.

Conservatives never tire of condemning George Soros for donating to Democratic candidates and liberal causes, but he does not try to hide his largesse as do the Koch brothers and the other shady characters, including foreign corporations. They prefer to operate in the shadows while Mr. Soros likes the bright sunlight. Reporting facts is not usually considered a nefarious device. It is called open and honest politics.

Ted Olson is a lifelong Republican and Kimberley Strassel writes for Rupert Murdoch.

They would reveal more than that, they might reveal the non-taxable income he's engaged in abroad, plus things like gas futures and other invetment vehicles that would tie him to the financial collapse and out-sourcing jobs.

the question didn't ask about government required disclosure.

Do you think the president should personally attack contributors to his political opponents?
  • Jeremiah Fef 2012/05/02 16:06:32 (edited)

I don't see him attacking anyone. I see him wanting all large donors' names exposed to the light of day. After Citizens United, we have a situation where about 200 well-heeled donors can control our electoral system by spending millions anonymously on attack ads. We can't stop them from doing that yet, but we can at least know who they are. How can you object to that?

The right loves to attack George Soros for contributing to Democratic candidates and liberal causes, but they miss the point. Mr. Soros operates openly and does not try to hide any of his donations, as opposed to people like the Koch brothers, who prefer to operate in the shadows.

the president doesn't need to expose the names -- other website already do that. The president got the names from that other website.

The president clearly wants to call out his political opponents and intimidate them -- and scare others from donating.

Why does the Left defend political intimidation?
  • Jeremiah Fef 2012/05/03 08:13:13
    Jeremiah
The right would never do that sort of thing, would they? That is exactly the purpose of the photo-ID laws being enacted by Republican legislatures and signed by Republican governors.

So you are saying exposure to daylight is intimidating? My donations are listed and are public record, but I do not feel intimidated. Why are corporations contributing to super PACs supposed to be anonymous? Why are we not to know who is giving what amount to whom? Why should we not know who those 200 donors are, who have the power to control our elections?

The Donors wont be running the nation, so I could care less about them. Anyone can donate to a cause so that's fairly unregulated. This is just another sad attack from the left attempting to cast attention off Obama and the issues in America and onto petty fabricated topics and highlights.
