Should New York City Elementary School Makes Learning Arabic mandatory?

An upper Manhattan public elementary school will be the first in the city to require that students study Arabic, officials said yesterday.

Beginning next semester, all 200 second- through fifth-graders at PS 368 in Hamilton Heights will be taught the language twice a week for 45 minutes — putting it on equal footing with science and music courses.

One reason Principal Nicky Kram Rosen selected Arabic — as opposed to more common offerings, such as Spanish or French — is because it will help the school obtain a prestigious International Baccalaureate standing.

But I do not believe it will hurt them...studying different cultures is a good thing. Such as I was made to learn about Mexican, Egyptian, French cultures, etc...

Not a chance, stupid useless idea and it sounds like Islamic propaganda to me. If you're going to have mandatory language class have it in some useful lanaguage like Spanish.

No, we don't mandate other languages depending on culture. In South Florida, Spanish isn't a requirement. High school students are given a choice of languages to study, and I have no problem with that, but to demand one language over another is not "Kosher."

Being offered as a course would be fine, but, it should absolutely not be made mandatory. The only language that should be mandatory in our schools, as well as in our country, is English.

I feel bad for saying no but I really think that if a 2nd language is required in a school it should be one that the students choose. Or maybe Spanish or Mandarin being the next widely spoken languages after English. I dunno I'm not sure how useful it would be in real life.

White kids have enough problems with NYC school Ebonics and you want to teach them what?

I wish New York City schools could teach American kids to speak American English. Let Rosetta Stone worry about the Camel Speak.

I feel like by saying 'no' I'm being unfair or racist or something. But I said 'no' because I honestly don't think kids will use Arabic ever when they are older or have any other kind of use for it.

Other than obtaining "...a prestigious International Baccalaureate standing." of what value I know not, except for the egos of administration, I just have to wonder if this is not political correctness run amoak. The five official world languages are English, French, Russian, Chinese, and Spanish, or at least that is what United Nations says. If the little dears need to learn Arabic, let them take lessons from a private source. The monies spent by the administration could, I'm sure, be spent on something much more supportive to the educations of said little dears.

What kind of ridiculous idea is this? Arabic is a language of degenerate Conquers. There is nothing good written in this language! I think a better language to learn is Hebrew! If you want to learn a good Middle Eastern Language!

I can see having it as an optional class that parents can agree for them to learn but to make it mandatory is wrong in my opinion.

No way in hell should children be forced to learn arabic. Boycott these schools let the politicians know it start now. If you start in Aug. it's too late. Pull kids out, whatever it takes.

If somebody would have suggested this 4 years ago we'd have said they were nuts.

When I went to school, it was mandatory to learn another language. Arabic makes sense these days, because right now we have to rely a lot on hiring interpreters in foreign countries, putting ourselves at risk. Arabic is a beautiful language, especially in written format. It's just like learning algebra (which most people never use) - it's gymanstics for the brain. We use arabic number system don't we?

i don't know what you already know about me and my people but ma'am ...any language can be indicator of its people may think and their culture if you like their culture or not ...for example when i used to study English at school ...i used to know their way of living (the British) ....their weddings ....their way of eating (what they eat and drink ) ...even their names !!!! ...so its the same to the Arabs ....if you had an Arabic book (for an Arab author ) you would be able to know at least the activity of daily living (from other point of view rather than the media and its effects upon people specially you :the Westerners ) ...with noticing that the Arab as a race means Muslims Arabs ...Christians Arabs ..And Jew Arabs ...you are confused with to concepts :Arabs and Muslims its not necessarily that every Arab is a Muslim and vice versa ,,,
as to slavery and misogyny ..yes you are right the Arabs before 1.400 years ago used to be like that ...but since GOD اhonored us with A messenger that telling us the truth and me and all Muslim witness that he just brought the message ...and he is innocent from what we did after him of decline ....
the Arabs did once good job for the entire humanity ...and that doesn't need witness in deed you just have to see Andalusia ...it has a big influence upon the modern civilization ..even if you like or admit this or not ...! ..thank you for concerning ma'am... !

seen what exactly ???slavery ??? well i live on Jordan and i don't see what you see ...strange huh ...one of us has an eye problem or just lair !!! i believe -and thank god - i live in a house that stable ,has elements of good even excellent house .....so obviously i don't need your witness...and if you don't want to learn Arabic you are free to do so ....and i free to write what i think ...some American know Chinese or Japanese...and i don't think that this learning issue has any thing to do if you like the people who talk it or their culture ....and if you learn it for that sake it would be for a little percentage ...you learn the language for you and your country sake ....for it own good not for telling other how much they are different from me and how much i hate them !!!
