I have four young sons. So far, they have shown the ability to have sound/rational thinking skills. I don't worry so much about their decision making skills, but there are people who come out after dark, looking for an opportune moment . Because they are young and think they are invincible, they are perfect targets for those with other ideas.

Yes, there is a time for them to be home and in bed and off the streets, So far, they agree.

Well, I thought this was a legally enforced curfew, which I disagree with. I think common sense has people home/inside in good time. I think it really is up to the parents and the children, everyone's different. I'm turning 17, I can stay out in town as late as I want, because I'm not stupid enough to hang around until 12 or in the bad places, and my parents know I'll tell them exactly what's up. They've never had to specifically say it to me, but I like them knowing where I am because I feel more secure that way, and they feel more secure knowing where I am. It's all kind of common sense and built in once you get to a point. Other people I know really need one because they lie and they do bad things and there is a danger in them being out in bad places at bad times. Other people I know don't need them, but they have them. We're all different and it's really down to the parents and the kids. It's not really black and white and up to a blanket decision :/

It is all a matter of obedience to parents, until they reach the age of 18. Raise up a child in the way he/she should go and they will never depart from it.

What a stupid question. When I was a kid, I better be in the house 30 minutes before the street lights come on,

They should abide by their parents curfews not the government issued curfews.

The law is still on the books in most cities. I am not sure that they do much about enforcing it.

Most certainly yes. First, the decision making part of their brain isn't fully developed until around 25. Second, it's for their own safety. It's simply more dangerous at night than during the day. More people are out and things are less visible often enough to pose a potential risk. Plus, once the bars close, the drunk drivers are out, and considering that three people related to me have been killed (murdered as far as I am concerned) at the hands of a drunk driver, minors should have a curfew. It should not be left up to parents b/c not every child has a parent. They may have a mother, father, or both, but they don't all have a parent. There is a difference b/t the two. There are some lame adults out there who aren't willing to discipline their children. That's why the government has to step in and act en parentus, since so many minors are allowed to stay out to all hours of the night.

Not a city mandated curfew that should be up to the parents. I mean don't nanny state do we?

A reasonable one, yes. Even bad kids that want to stay out will stay in after curfew if it's enforced. It also depends on the child. If you can really trust your children, it's okay to be more lenient... but someone under sixteen should definitely have a curfew and between sixteen and eighteen, a later curfew with exceptions. But it's really weird for someone over eighteen to have a curfew, in my opinion, unless they can't come home without waking up their parents who need rest for work.

Thanks. I assume that's 16, I'd say under 14 year olds should have a curfew.

I'd go with under 18. Till you're able to work, vote, drink, wed, etc....legally and provide for yourself, well lets just say you'll have to live by someone else's rules. Plus, no matter how old you get, there will always be rules / limits / regulations in place....

I never understood the point of curfew. Either way, the good kids stay home and the bad kids go out.

Until they're no linger minors it's a wise idea. The later it is it seems the worse the decisions made.
