Should Minors Be Allowed to Use Tanning Beds?

In the wake of controversy surrounding Patricia Krentcil, who was accused of putting her 6-year-old daughter into a tanning booth, New York lawmakers are contemplating an outright ban on the use of tanning booths for minors. But Krentcil's case isn't the only reason it's being considered. Officials say they're concerned about teen use, particularly around prom, and the 72 percent increase in melanoma that The American Cancer Society has reported over the last decade.

A similar law was proposed in Chicago by Alderman Debra Silverstein, who told CBS, "When I saw this news story about [Krentcil] on the news, I was like, we really have to do something. We have laws against selling cigarettes to minors, because it causes cancer, and tanning in the tanning beds causes cancer." Unfortunately for much of the nation, Snooki is over 18, so she'll be allowed to continue tanning regardless. But is the proposed ban taking it too far?

Yet they are children so do you think they are responsible enough? The picture you showed me was an adult so please come back with a more valid argument.

Since tanning beds have the potential to cause harm, then you should have to be 18. Then you are legally an adult and should be able to make a smart decision for yourself. If you want to tan before then, lay out in the sun...it looks more natural and it's free.

Who would allow a 6 year old to go through these types of body modifications? The only reason I can think of is that they were on one of those ridiculous beauty pageant shows.

Not without a parent's concent and signature 'in person' and even then, the minor should be at least 16 years of age and have the desire to use them along with the reality of the risks and etc. Anyone younger than 16 have no business in a tanning bed.

Who in their right mind would allow a child to get into a tanning booth?! Yes i know that children can get a tan from being in the sun, but they are [should be] wearing sun block. In a tanning booth it won't work. Besides, a child's skin is much more sensitive so they will probably end up getting cancer.

Tanning is bad, just like smoking and drinking...and well teenagers say yes to whatver they want without thinking, so no....wait tell they become adults and if they want to ruin there skin just as ruining your lungs with smoking then go ahead...

No, people are under the mistaken belief that they are a safe alternative to sunbathing.....they are not. If you choose as an adult to risk disfigurement from skin cancer and even death from melanoma(I have lost two good friends to this) that's your choice. But we need to protect our kids from it as long as we can.

Kids shouldn't be allowed to use tanning beds for the same reason they're not allowed to smoke cigarettes.

Overly tanned people are just freaky looking. Why would you want to cook yourself or have your kids cook themselves?

In Texas minors must be 16 and 1/2 and must be accompanied by an adult until they are 18.

What's this got to do with tanning? and why send it to me? Just about everyone is saying the same thing. Personally I don't care what YOU do with your body, get cancer if it pleases you.
