Should Minors Be Allowed to Use Tanning Beds?

In the wake of controversy surrounding Patricia Krentcil, who was accused of putting her 6-year-old daughter into a tanning booth, New York lawmakers are contemplating an outright ban on the use of tanning booths for minors. But Krentcil's case isn't the only reason it's being considered. Officials say they're concerned about teen use, particularly around prom, and the 72 percent increase in melanoma that The American Cancer Society has reported over the last decade.

A similar law was proposed in Chicago by Alderman Debra Silverstein, who told CBS, "When I saw this news story about [Krentcil] on the news, I was like, we really have to do something. We have laws against selling cigarettes to minors, because it causes cancer, and tanning in the tanning beds causes cancer." Unfortunately for much of the nation, Snooki is over 18, so she'll be allowed to continue tanning regardless. But is the proposed ban taking it too far?

But with all the other stupid crap they are doing today, Tanning would probably be benign

People link probable cause for things to cause cancer a lot in the media. They forget that more often than not correlation is not causation. However, the UV light from tanning beds DOES cause cancer. It's not just subjective, it's radiation.

i agree, but the sun lets off UV radiation, though most of it gets filtered off, we are still exposed to enough to cause cancer. so if we aren't afraid of the sun, why should we be afraid of tanning beds.

Well standing in the sun for hours will do the same thing, you're correct... but we are afraid of the sun, that's why we invented Sunscreen. It's unreasonable for people to pursue body image that doesn't match their genetic disposition. Society should encourage people to be happy being as black as coffee or as pale as vanilla ice cream.... Children are more susceptible to the fear of non-conformity, or to need a group image identity, even if that image is harmful to their health.

What too much UV light does to your DNA is just scary I don't see why people would put themselves at such a risk for cancer in the first place, but when you're still growing you should definitely not be able to!

No way. Tanning is very unhealthy, and it's not good for minors.

No one should be using any Tanning Beds or Tanning Booth. The Sun should be enough to tan you and it's natural. Yes it makes an individual happy. I suppose Cancer is not enough to scare them of dying soon and the pain of going through CHEMO and losing you hair and all that comes with having cancer. Sure everything has a side effect but why put yourself in that situation when you are in control of it. It's plain stupidity when aesthetic and being vain rules your brain.

I can agree with you, if you can join the armed forces and die at 18, then you should be allowed to buy alcohol, smoke, tan, and choose to put on your seat belt or not, get piercings, tattoos but not under 18. And in states where the parents are responsible for the child's health care until their 21, make the regulation till 21. I don't do any of it, but when your grown your grown.

I don't see why not. I think when a lot of people see "minor"s they imagine little 12 year olds. But what about the 16 and 17 year olds who want to go?

While I would not endorse the decision for my kid (I'd tell them to just go outside if they want a tan, like I did), if someone else wants to let their kid do it, go ahead. It doesn't affect me.

We have laws for everything. It's ridiculous. I don't see why we can't just let people live life the way they want to, and leave them alone. It's none of our business what someone else does, and it's definitely not the public's job to tell me what I can and cannot let my child do.

Why is getting tan so attractive..?
Think about roasting a chicken.. it goes from pale to brown.. because it is COOKED. You are cooking your dead skin.. that's not hot.

no one should use them. they dont even realize how much they're damaging their skin. they dont understand that too much tanning can give you skin cancer, it can make you get wrinkles earlier, and they just dont see how bad they look when they do it.

No, unless sit is prescribed by a doctor if he or she has Vitiligo symptom. No minor child has any business in a tanning bed getting their skin destroyed and a adult pushing the stereo typical look into their minds of what women supposed to look like, tanning beds like Tobacco products should have to put posters up in the Salon showing women in their 30's 40's after 10 or 15 years of tanning. (without makeup)

It would work if the adult in charge either parent or tann bed owner would take charge, but they don't and children get hurt in the long run.

I understand that but often a minor does not have a say in what their parents will make them do, whether or not it is a safe or wise decision. This way, they're protected from an adult making an idiotic decision for them.

News flash, parents make idiotic decisions for their kids all of the time. It's called parenting and as long as the intent is good who is it for us to say otherwise.
  • Tarheel Common ... 2012/05/13 21:56:24
    Tarheel
In this case, it is potentially bad for them so regardless of the intent, I think it's good to have protection in place. It's not a child's fault if have they stupid, thoughtless parents. I'm a mother and a teacher, some kids don't have parents that make smart decisions. As for your comment about "who is it for us to say otherwise", seriously, it's okay for a parent to do anything or let their child do anything so long as their intent is good?
  • Common ... Tarheel 2012/05/13 22:21:58
    Common Sense Conservative
Yes, it's called living life and not thinking everything is bad for your kid. I would rather my kid got into a tanning booth than eat at McDonald's and that's my choice until my kids are out of my home.

Have you ever been near a cigarette when someone is smoking? If you as a parent have then it's potentially bad for them.

Have you ever had your kid in a city like New York or L.A. If so, you're allowing them to breathe bad air which is potentially bad for them.

Do you know how much asbestos is in your home, if not, potentially it could be bad for them.

This list could go on forever. Be a parent and be the best parent you can be for YOUR kid, not mine.
  • Tarheel Common ... 2012/05/13 22:32:24
    Tarheel
Hey, I'm not trying to be a parent to your kid or anyone else's but mine. I do, however, think that tanning beds are something kids shouldn't be in and if it takes making it against the law for a child under 18 then fine. Yes, I've been and still am being the best parent that I can. Your list is silly and not relevant to this issue.

Wow, totally inappropriate and mean spirited reply (to a post not in reply to you in the first place). First off, I'm a very middle of the road Democrat and have sometimes voted Republican. I vote for the person not the party. You're obviously a right-winged jerk. I would never start spouting off at someone like you've done to me on this post. I guess anyone has the right to do anything to anyone whether it's moral, ethical or whatever. Go spout your hate to someone who cares about what you have to say.
