Should Mexico's independence day, "Cinco de Mayo," be celebrated here in the United States by Mexican-Americans instead of the "Fourth of July?"

Not instead, but along WITH. Anytime a people oppressed and deprived by the few and the powerful succeed in shedding those bonds it is a celebration for all mankind everywhere. The Mexican Revolution the same, as ours, the French, the Greeks against the Turks, the Irish against British rule and the list goes on and on. Think I'll myself a Modelo. pancho villa holding a modela modela beer

Having studied the true history of this country, I no longer "celebrate" the 4th of July. The lies started in 1777.

NOTHING should replace the 4th of July in the USA. But they should be allowed to celebrate it like St Patty's day. I have NO problem having ethnic holidays as long as we KEEP the American ones.

your an idiot, Mexico's independence day is on September 16th.

Cinco de Mayo was a war in Puebla, between the French and the Mexicans who lived there. The Mexicans won, which is why some French people hate us. And if you go to actual Mexico, it is ONLY celebrated in Puebla, nowhere else, we celebrate here in the US more than Mexico.

I know lots of Mexican nationals here in the U.S. and I know a few Americans of Mexican descent. Real Mexicans do not celebrate "Cinco de Mayo." It's a fake holiday created for American Latinos to feel special about themselves. It's better for immigrants to become mainstream Americans instead of falsely finding ways to feel different. It's a lot like Kwanza.

its not a fake holiday, it was a war between the Mexicans and the French (Mexicans obviously won) in Puebla, Mexico. and yes an actual Mexican does not celebrate it. Here in the US we celebrate here more, Puebla is really the only place who does celebrate it.

I am aware of all that. What you said does not diminish the FACT that Mexicans do not celebrate Cinco de Mayo while American Latinos do, which in my opinion makes it about as fake as Kwanza, emphasizing differences instead of celebrating being an American.

Amazing how the unwashed and uneducated have congregated in a blog to argue a historical event that never happened. For you brainless meatheads, Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexico's independence day.......it's September 16th. I think what upsets a lot of you so called nationalists is that France (Napoleaon) wanted to establish a base in Mexico to help the Confederates in the US civil war. If it were not for the French army's defeat at battle of Puebla (May 5th), the French momentum would have overtaken Mexico and perhaps influenced the US civil war. Although the French went on to invade and eventually (2 years later) conquered Mexico, the US (after the civil war) and the British "assisted" the Mexican "freedom" fighters to rebel and eventually defeat the French.

All you ignorant poster should try to read a little a stop being influenced by the RepubliKKKon and Conserv-a-rats that are ruining our country. .....

Personally, I don't see any reason to celebrate this particular day, or even acknowledged - at all. I am a Texas girl - born and raised here with saltwater in my veins. For years, students were taught Texas history, and most of us grew up with a huge sense of pride in our history - Remember the Alamo wasn't just a saying. In addition to that, being a native Houstonian, the battle where Texas won her independence is on the east side of town. A couple of years ago, my sister picked up her granddaughter from elementary school, and she proceed to tell my sister all about Cinco de Mayo..........when my sister asked her about San Jacinto Day (April 21 - 2 weeks earlier), she knew nothing about it. What's crazy is that the battleground is only about 30 miles from here. She knew all about some holiday that means something to Spain, yet knew nothing about the day that the Mexican army surrendered to Texas. Amazing - still burns my buns.

You either owe me an apology, or you posted to the wrong person...........I KNOW Cinco de Mayo is NOT the Mexican independence day.........

I realize you do not care, but I find your posting to be very rude and disrespectful. You may not agree with people, but name calling, a 'smarter than you' attitude, etc. never, ever resolves anything positive, and simply continues the hate and division in this country. Try to find common ground if you care to get anything accomplished worthwhile.

They should celebrate both. Just like Irish-Americans celebrate St. Patrick's Day, German-Americans celebrate Octoberfest, and Chinese-Americans celebrate the Chinese New Year. You can be an American without forgetting where you or your family has come from.

Okay, let's cut to the chase to determine really how patriotic to the United States you are, by asking you these two simple questions:

    1. Do you support amnesty for illegal aliens?

    2. Do you support allowing illegals college at taxpayer expense?

If you say NO to both those questions, then I will accept your claim to be a patriotic American.
  • ↓←↑♣→NV... tncdel 2012/05/05 01:04:43 (edited)

    1) no, because this country started as people who weren't welcome here. And also my mother came here illegally to have a better life (before you say anything stupid yes she does have papers and has had them since 1989) I feel like true Americans are either veterans or people who come here from terrible countries to live the American dream because they came over obstacles to get here. And for the rest, we just got lucky (including me). We could have been born some where else but thankfully we were born here.

    2) Yes, i would rather have them go to college than some stupid jock who didnt have the grades but got a scholarship because he/she can play some ball or dumb kids that were lucky enough to have parents with money.

I answered your questions honestly. So there you go :)

I've never met any Mexican who has come up to me said they were an illegal immigrant and rubbed it in my face that they were here illegally. People run around with Irish flags on St. Patrick's Day and most of them aren't even Irish. Who cares!? Let them celebrate their ethnic holidays!

I have seen them. Does that mean that all Mexican-Americans do that? NO. You're judging an entire ethnic group by a minority. I cannot begin to say how wrong that is.
