Should Menthol Cigarettes Be Banned?

Menthol cigarettes aren't more addictive than regular cigarettes but they could still be banned.

A federal advisory panel report said removing menthol cigarettes from the market would benefit public health, according to The New York Times. But the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee, possibly worried about litigation with tobacco companies, didn't recommend to the Food and Drug Administration that it restrict or ban the additive.

While no scientific evidence showed that menthol smokers inhaled more toxins or had an increased risk of disease compared with other smokers, there was evidence that the availability of menthol cigarettes made smoking more attractive to young people, African-Americans and other groups because the flavor was less harsh.

"This is the most conclusive scientific finding that menthol cigarettes dramatically increase youth tobacco use and make it more difficult for African-Americans to quit," Matthew L. Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, told the Times. "It creates a scientific record which compels F.D.A. to act."

Menthol was first added to cigarettes in the 1920s. Congress banned candy, fruit and spice flavoring in tobacco products but declined to take on menthols. It gave the F.D.A. broad authority to regulate the products in 2009.

The cigarettes are a multi-billion dollar industry. It accounts for more than a quarter of the $80 billion market, according to the Times. Menthols are preferred by more than 80 percent of black smokers, about 22 percent of non-Hispanic white smokers and nearly half of 12- to 17-year-old smokers, nearly 20 million smokers in all.

The F.D.A. said it would now open its own investigation and research into menthol cigarettes before deciding on what action to take.

Since the menthol opens up your lungs, I would imagine that the smoke would get even deeper into your lungs, but after smoking for a while, this would not really matter, since they will be filled with tar anyways. It may be that menthol cigarettes could be harder to give up, but this could also be due to cultural issues as well.. Here is an interesting article about that.

I believe all cigarettes should be banned! I am not a smoker, but I have family members and I know people that are smokers. I refuse to destroy my lungs and body by taking in such a harmful chemical like cigarettes. I just don't see the point of some people lighting a cigarette and inhaling? Like a person puts a cigarette in his mouth and lights it.. okay? But it's pointless if you ask me. So, take my advice, NEVER SMOKE IT'S SO UNCOOL! Thanks!

Leave peoples' choices about cigarettes alone. Live and let live. You don't like it? Don't do it. Someone else likes it? They do it and it's none of your business.

I can't stand the smell of cigarettes, but I personally don't think they should be banned. I hate the burning smell and the nauseating after smell, but as long as people don't smoke around me or I remove myself from that environment, I'm okay. I know how it is, my fiance smoked for a long time before he met me. I'm quite happy he quit.

The information's out there. The advertising is regulated. It's just up to people to decide to use tobacco or not and in what way. Drugs in general shouldn't be banned, just regulated.

Ahh, I see. Get an air purifier if you can, they work really well and keep the room smelling fresh. I have a hunter one and it works great. There's a few settings and it's not too noisy.

I hear ya, I hope your pregnancy goes well! I'd stick to ginger ale for the nausea, that usually helps when I get nauseated for one thing or another.

So, because cooter, bubba and junior smoke in your house, you want to ban it for everybody? Selfish. Ignorant. Unacceptable.

I do not smoke. I choose not to. Yes I have Asthma, but I have to say there is such a thing as OVER REGULATION!

Besides .........trying to ban 'smoking' will go the same way as Prohibition did in the 20's.

Moronic anti smokers caused me to smoke 15 years longer after I wanted to quit.
The more some idiot tries to take over and force me to march lock step with the rest of the lemmings the the more I resent it. If the half witted health Nazis had shut up , I would had quit smoking fifteen years earlier. The cigarette wars are over , it's no longer fashionable among young people , ( they prefer POT , thank you ) time to stop the cigarette crusifictions.

What's with this administration of is this just somebody's opinion because they're bored.

Picked up my first cigarette in my teens. I didn't start really smoking until I was in my 20s quite smoking in my 40s. I started (my choice); I quit (my choice) ... nobody smokes in my car or house (my choice) ... do you see the pattern here. No government interference was or is necessary. The only problem I know of with menthols is that one has a tendency to inhale deeper because it doesn't burn your throat to do so.

If the Government bans that then other cigaretts will be next. It should butt out and let people choose for themselves. But not with this healthcare law the Government will see the need to regulate everything we consume.

I do not smoke, drink alcohol and even though I don't look it, I watch what I eat (no smart remarks about me watching what I eat while shoveling it in).. But they are personal choices because I am an adult, and it is my right to make that choice.

The government has absolutely no Constitutional right to tell me what “legal” product I can or can't consume or use. Americans whether they indulge in smoking or not should be outraged that the federal government treats them like children, eventually telling Americans that they are not adult enough to make their own choices.

This goes for salt usage, food portions, fat content and calorie count... DO YOU HERE ME MICHELLE?

The FDA was given the authority to restrict the chemicals put in cigarettes, to include the carcinogens and addicting agents. I'm waiting.........but it ain't happened yet.

The government can't even get it right when it comes to banning illegals how are they going to get a grip on a product wanted by a portion of the public?
