Should It Be OK to Surf for Porn at Libraries?

If someone wanted to watch some outlandish pornography, the library would be the last place you might think would allow it. But you would be wrong.

Due to the almighty First Amendment, dirty old men, curious matrons and any overstimulated youngsters can surf for porn in libraries in New York City, according to the New York Post. City policy gives adults uncensored access to extreme, hard-core Internet smut because it all falls under the protection of free speech.

"Customers can watch whatever they want on the computer," Brooklyn Public Library spokeswoman Malika Granville, describing the philosophy that's the rule at the city's 200-plus branches, told the Post.

This obviously has some religious leaders, librarians and patrons outraged that people might be cruising porn sites right next to them.

"What they're doing is publicly funding an appetite for the most debased fare available," Catholic League President Bill Donohue told the Post. "It's not like a Playboy centerfold anymore -- it's far worse."

One patron said she sat next to an old porn watcher at a Brooklyn library once. He had filters around the screen, so she couldn't see in, but she heard a very loud threesome screaming in faux ecstasy.

"It was disgusting," she said.

Under federal law, all libraries that take federal funding must install filters on publicly used computers to block content containing illegal obscenity and child pornography. Although all New York City computers have filters, anyone 17 or over can turn them off, said officials.

Why should tax dollars be used for perverts to view porn? Has anyone considered that there may be children nearby who might see this smut, or do they even care? This definitely must be a decision of a liberal.

The only thing about that, is back before computers we didn't have subsciptions to Penthouse or Playboy(at least at the Library I worked at). So wouldn't that fit into the same category? Why should the tax payers provide free Porn.

do you think that speech is a blanket word for freedom?
Are peoples voices being illegally suppressed when we stop them for using public property for porn?

as a frequenter of my beloved Helen Hall library one to two times a week, i would find someone resisting the urge to jack off in public as he (we all know its a he) watches porn in front of other citizens offensive. People take their kids there for reason's sake!

use ur own computer to watch porn. if u don't hav a comp, go old school and buy playboy or hustler or whatever suits ur fancy. leave the library computers for ppl who need them for important business and don't have access or kids that need to do hw. and if u r going to watch porn at the library, at least put headphones on.

Only if the library made a private section for the porn viewing and banned kids from entering. It's sick to watch porn in front of kids or to let them watch it.

It's interesting that despite the power of free speech, it gets misunderstood a lot. The only conquence it protects people from is prosecution for expressing their opinions and beliefs. If watching porn was protected under free speech, companies wouldn't be allowed to fire people for watching porn on company computers and it would probably be legal for the perverts (or as I refer to them as, freaks) who enjoy child porn to watch it as long as they didn't make the video.

Public libraries are home to many youngsters. Would you like your 8 year old son's eyes to wander onto a lesbian orgy that happens to be on some perverts screen? If this was done in a restricted area, I would have no objection. Despite it being disgusting of course. :)

The answer is you don't, because it is an appalling thing to do.
That is why we don't allow people to do it.

Good grief, you should be allowed to watch or read ANYTHING on the internet at a library if it is legal to do so. The library belongs to the people, all people, even the ones who like to watch porn. Taxpayers are not paying extra for it, they are not adding content. They are furnishing access to the internet, just like the one you have at home. Kids can go to the computer at their or a friends house and have much greater access to it than a library provides.

You're missing the point. No one cares that it is legal.
You can also legally walk around naked with a 10 inch vibrator sticking out of your anus--as long as you are not in public. When you step outside like that, it is called public indecency!
Use your head, there are children at the library.
  • Jack sardoni... 2011/04/27 16:23:25

No, you are missing the point. This is about forcing a library to restrict access to the internet. Use your head, there are children in the home too. It is illegal to let children view porn in the home or the library, that hasn't changed. Precautions should be put in place by the library or the offenders arrested if they view porn in front of kids.

No extra charge means you don't pay for the porn, it's free. They pay for internet access. You didn't score very high on the reading comprehension tests in school did you?
