Bridget Burkholder, a 23-year-old pregnant woman awaiting trial in an Oregon prison, is being required to pay 10 percent of her $65,000 bail if she wants permission to take medical leave to have an abortion.

Life News reports that she is unable to pay the $6,500, and is requesting that the county pay for the procedure.

[Burkholder] is currently in Yamhill County Jail awaiting trial on charges of arson, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct after she damaged a motel room in a bid to set herself on fire. The pregnant mother also faces charges of reckless driving and driving under the influence related to another incident.

The prison sheriff does have the authority to allow Burkholder to get the abortion, but has stated that he will leave that decision up to the courts because he does not allow "medical furloughs on pretrial leave."

What i meant to click is, NO! I agree that abortion is the right of the mother, and its preferable to Yet another casey anthony nightmare. I would bet nearly all of the folks here saying "orphanage" & give it to the "state" have never ever been to an orphanage. They, despite best intentions are places of despair, abuse and suffering. They are also places of bare means and often proposed budget cuts. Our prisoners on death row receive better care than our orphans. I was a teen the first time I volunteered at an orphanage. And those who have been, know that the scars of such institutions, and a lack of family are often detrimental. For those who don't know, in many places orphans can be phased out of the system by 16 where many become homeless or end up encarcerated. In short, statistically, if you grow up in an institution, then too often you end up in an institution. It is plain to see, too few children are adopted, and if you were ever to adopt, would you be more likely to adopt the child of a convict or that cute cuddly adorable and perfect little Asian girl unwanted just because she's female and born in china? It is too easy to say give that child to the state, and then you go on with your life, have your own kids, and that child is forgotten and lost in a bureaucratic syste...

If you're willing to sentence anyone to an orphanage you should be willing, with the rest of us, to try and make things better for the children starting today! May I suggest the search query, "how to help american orphans"...

They should let her leave to give birth, and put the baby up for adoption. It's not like she would end up caring for it either way.

She should. Aside from having to pay the bail, if she does have this kid, it's going to end up in a bad position. :/

If she were to do this, I feel she should shell out the money. But, I am not for abortion, so I really feel she should not abort the child, but have it and put it up for adoption.

She shouldn't be given the opportunity. I wouldn't grant her that at all if I were a judge.

Should a mother have to post bail so she can leave the prison and stab her 6-year-old child to death?

Same difference. Absurd question with no right answer. NO CHILD KILLING WITH TRANQUILITY. It is murder, because he/she is a baby.

    Rules are rules.

Do liberals want new legislation specifically allowing a "get out of jail free" card for women who've decided that killing their unborn is convenient? Wouldn't getting out of jail make it MORE convenient to euthanize their babies?

Why should she be allowed out of jail for the purpose of killing her child?

Do they allow people to get out of jail so they can go home to have sex with their partners?

This is a totally ridiculous situation, abortion is not a "medical" condition, it is a purely voluntary procedure. If she had a true medical condition that needed to be addressed, the county would have it looked at, but a non medical procedure should have to wait for her release to be attended to.

If she wants to kill her own baby, let her raise the money herself. Don't use taxpayers' money to pay for that baby's death.

Apparently, she already has a death wish as the fire she in jail for setting was intended to kill herself and her unborn child. I don't think she should be forced to carry the child to term BUT the county should NOT have to pay for it. Even if she does give birth to the child, there is no way a responsible government will let her psycho-self keep and raise it, is there? Burden after burden. It is a very sticky situation.

This woman is a danger to herself and would be a danger to anything she was responsible for. If abortion is her choice get it done ASAP. Fight about the money later.

The Supreme Court rule in Roe vs Wade that a woman has the right to have an abortion and therefore the Oregon prison system should not be allowed to do anything to deny her that right.

I agree but I don't think the county should be paying for it either. You have the right to bear arms too but I don't think that right includes the government buying you the weapon, for example.

They should let her out to have the abortion, won't actually cost them anything since they can just take her down for the abortion and then lock her back up. Much cheaper than having to make the taxpayers foot the bill for her giving birth. Not to mention adding another unwanted child left to be a ward of the state and more taxpayer dollars being wasted on foster care. Then add in the odds of that child growing up to become a criminal
and costing even more taxpayer dollars. When will it end. Take her down for the damn abortion and quit wasting my money, I happen to live in Oregon. Also, they should have let her kill herself to begin with and then we wouldn't have to worry about any of this. She'll keep wasting our money until she off's herself in her jail cell. What a waste.

Her body, her right as long as she's paying for the abortion itself.

It's not HER body[...]she's talking about KILLING someone else. It is a body INSIDE her body she is wanting to have torn limb to limb. It is NOT a procedure to her body, but in her body. There is a difference and I'm so tired of hearing this lame excuse. It is NOT HER BODY AT ALL!!!!!!!!

I hate to burst your bubble, but it IS attached to HER body, containing part of HER DNA, making it part of HER and therefore giving her the right to remove what is essentially a tumor from her body.. Moreover, a fetus is NOT a human being. It has the potential to become a human being. There's a very big difference.

Not all of them, and one of the rights that isn't forsaken upon imprisonment is the right of a person to ensure their health remains satisfactory. Since a fetus can have numerous detrimental effects to the mother, she technically has the right to the abortion.

23, in jail and wants to have an abortion ? Surely prison has some kind of medical facilities. State should bring doctor to the prison and be done with it.

Time to make people be responsible for their own actions. Make her pay the bill. Give her a loan if necessary and take her tax refund checks if necessary.
