Should Hospitals Lock Up Baby Formula to Encourage Breast-feeding? NYC Democrat Mayor Says Yes

EXCERPTS: The nanny state is going after moms.

Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will breast-feed.

Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.

Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

While breast-feeding activists applaud the move, bottle-feeding moms are bristling at the latest lactation lecture.

“If they put pressure on me, I would get annoyed,” said Lynn Sidnam, a Staten Island mother of two formula-fed girls, ages 4 months and 9 years. “It’s for me to choose.”

Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.

With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to.

Sorry but hospitals promoting formula is what is going to far and it has been going on for years. I don't believe that money and competition should be involved in peoples health.

I've had 11 children and not once have I had formula pushed on them. Every time I was breastfeeding the kids, I had 3 of them that refused the breast, every time it was feeding time we had a crisis on our hands even lactation consultants gave up and agreed with me to give them a bottle.

I had two c-sections and it was very difficult for me to nurse, but I did it and I was encouraged to do it. I just think this is a matter between a physician and the patient, not the government.

Yes I agree, I understand the hospitals are just being asked to secure the formula.

The hospitals I was in respected my choice, but I brought some just in case I couldn't nurse. I assume they have it on hand, but not for everyone to freely take now. I don't really understand the need for what is being proposed so long as the nursing is encouraged and it is where I live, but not demanded or forced and certainly a baby shouldn't be fed a bottle without asking the mother.

Actually, he was a Democrat most of his life, became a Republican for a few years and now claims to be an Independent.

    Republican Party (2001–2007)
    Independent (2007–present)

Ah, yes! The 'it takes a village' approach continues! More and more people are seeing the results of an all encompansing government from this issue to wether you should circumsize your baby boy.

The election choice in November is, in my mind at least more than just if the President should be re-elected. It is a choice between two party's with opposite views of how much freedom of choice an individual should have.

On one side we have the democratic party who encourages destructive behavior, yet wants to control peoples lives as much as possible.

On the other the republican party who supports the idea of personal choice freedom.

Many women who want to breastfeed find out that they just cannot for many different reasons. Others are not interested at all in doing so. This is no one's business but the woman and her health care provider who are the only two people in the world that can decide what is best for her and her baby.
