Should Hospitals Lock Up Baby Formula to Encourage Breast-feeding? NYC Democrat Mayor Says Yes

Gee ya don't think this has anything to do with the cost of baby formula for the hand out crowd do ya?

EXCERPTS: The nanny state is going after moms.

Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will breast-feed.

Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.

Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

While breast-feeding activists applaud the move, bottle-feeding moms are bristling at the latest lactation lecture.

“If they put pressure on me, I would get annoyed,” said Lynn Sidnam, a Staten Island mother of two formula-fed girls, ages 4 months and 9 years. “It’s for me to choose.”

Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.

With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to.

So what is the alternative for baby..... starvation if the mother has no milk or
just doesn't want to breast feed? ANd if the baby dies of malnutrition, who would
    be charged with manslaughter?

    This man is coocoo

I have just one last question: when the Mayor's campaign to get another term even
though they had term limits..... did he get ALL term limits eradicated?

Apparently, Bloomberg does not have enough work to do, therefore, he is filling his time with ridiculous ultimatums and rules. Does baby formula somehow fit in with the no-large-soda dictate? Someone stop this man before he tries to take over the world! cartoon bloomberg rules the world

Any mother on WIC or welfare SHOULD have to breastfeed.

Sorry folks, but the various governments are BROKE, and we cannot affrod to keep paying the FORTUNE that formula costs for all those who refuse to NOT have kids they cannot afford, OR refuse to use the boobs for what they were put on the chest for.

That being said, IF they cannot breastfeed-then give them the formula. Geez, not all women can nurse, some don't lactate, some babies need food faster, and sometimes, it just is not reasonable.

The government is annoying. We need to cut it in half. Maybe then they would be actually busy keeping up with real needs and wouldn't have time micromanage everyone's life.

WE should stop all rewards fro slaggards programs, that would be the smartest thing and a HUGE savings.

Perhaps if women and men had to figure out HOW to support their own kids, they would be a LOT more responsible about whoring around.

Trying to force someone to breastfeed is not a good idea. Who the hell do they think they are? It is the mothers' choice and the mothers' choice only!

in many cases the baby has a say also, and in some cases even the mother doesn't have a choice my wife wanted to breastfeed but she was not producing enough milk so the hospital had to start our first on formula then changed him to a soy based formula after a reaction to normal formula, but i understand what you are saying i was asking in my responce where the womens rights people were on this one glad to see someone spoke up :)

Mayor Bloomberg needs psych eval, IMHO. I nursed, and I recommend mother's nurse (it's best for them and the baby)....but forcing it is NOT appropriate!!!! Don't make my healthcare choices FOR me - not for abortion, birth control or nursing.

Up to a point, I agree. But when we have welfare moms, who stay at home and can nurse, but prefer the convenience of formula-THEN it should be mandatory.

Maybe if having kids wasn't a money maker on the social programs, people would be a lot more careful about when they have kids.

We might even be able to stem the tide of so many unwed, mothers and lower our welfare rates.

And what percentage do they represent? Too bad for the children of the girls who cannot nurse, eh? And hey, if they're nursing it makes it SO much easier to work (a is Workfare) or to find a job, eh? Or attend school so that they have a shot at getting a job? This won't stem the flood of illegitimate children.

Most DON'T work. Most DON'T. If they CAN'T nurse, no peoblem, if they CAN they should.

Why do WE the taxpayers have to keep funding slaggards and lay-a-bouts?

I'm guessing we live in two different states, welfare is a state funded program. We have Workfare programs here, as welfare is either state or town. If the town aids you you get to 'pay it back' by cutting lawns, etc. (provided you are physically able). Te State only floats your boat for a while (2 years max) and puts you through some kind of training and sets you up on your own two. Works pretty well here, we don't have 'generational' welfare.
  • Lanikai bags th... 2012/08/01 15:52:58

Welfare is a federal mandate, with states sharing the costs under federal guidelines, with states having a smaller voice in what occurs with the cash. Most folks find a way to stay on the system, so that they get their "checks" and their food stamps, and their free rent, so they can buy nice cars and nice clothes.

It is a sucky system, and now obie wants to let them use having a massage as a "work" item.
  • bags th... Lanikai 2012/08/01 15:57:49

Again, Lanakai....must be the difference between states. I worked in human services and the folks I dealt with....VERY few wanted to live like they do. And there were no fancy cars or clothes, hoopdie cars and clothes from the clothing pantry (I worked there too). Not much free rent here, not many places fall under the Section 8 mandates.
  • Lanikai bags th... 2012/08/01 16:07:29

You need to come drive around Alabama and Florida. The housing projects have some of the most fixed up cars in the area, and inside the public housing/section 8 housing they have direct tv, 70 inch plasmas leather furniture. It is a way OF life not a means to get back on their feet, and most of these same slaggards use the food pantries, the Christmas toy give aways so as NOT to spend their cash value on that stuff. It pretty much IS a Lifestyle choice.

Wow. We seem to have missed that subculture pretty much. Up here, those that apply for Welfare (through the town) have their property attached by by the town for the amount they receive. It's paid back by 'Workfare'. And State ATDF is just so long before you go through re/training to be able to secure a gainful employment OR get certification from physicians that you are medically unable to secure and maintain gainful employment and then proceed to apply for disability. And no one receives enough from either to get fancy with anything. I'm not saying we don't have our abuses, some arsehole always gets through, but they really are few and far between.
  • Lanikai bags th... 2012/08/01 16:56:02

Down here, we cannot make them work, cannot cut off their "benefits" and cannot attach their property. ACLU made sure of that.

So they can collect forever, and accumulate nice things while paying zero for their basics-rent, electric, food, medical.

Part of WHY this "programs" make me so darned angry-USERS.

Not to be arguementative here but just a thought when i was reading your reply, those same "welfare" mothers my also not be eatting healthy or properly let alone the ones that abuse drugs smoking or drink all of which is transfered from her body to the baby via the mothers milk, maybe the baby itself is better off in many cases like this by having formula?

Just a random thought from an addled mind :)
  • Lanikai Broddy 2012/07/30 19:52:04
    Lanikai
If they are not eating properly-that would be THEIR fault, same with drug use-THEIR fault. Pediatric Dr's test for that when the baby check ups happen, my daughter was tested the entire time I nursed. WIth the WIC, food stamps and other freebies, welfare folks should be SUPER healthy.

And IF they repeatedly use drugs-we SHOULD have the right to sterilize them.
