I think it should be mandatory for a well regulated millitia. It would also teach these kids how lethal they really are. Not like some movie or video game.

My dad's high school had a gun club in the 1930's, and it was in the middle of the state capitol city (Lansing, MI). They NEVER had any kind of issue with school shootings. It DOES teach responsibility and respect for the firearm.

Gun-free zones invite bad people with guns in, and everyone is a sitting duck. If the administrators and teachers were allowed to be armed, the gunman in Newtown would have been stopped long before getting to the kids. In fact, if it is known that administrators and teachers may be armed, that in and of itself is a deterrent to bad people coming in and shooting.

Anyone that wants to make a school a gun-free zone should be required to post on his/her own home that it, too, is a gun-free zone, in just as prominent lettering. If the homeowners balk at that, then don't make schools gun-free zones. You balk at that because you know in your heart that criminals DON'T follow the law! Banning law-abiding citizens from having guns DOES NOT mean law-BREAKING citizens (er, non-citizens and illegal aliens, too) will voluntarily give them up. Anyone who thinks that they will has their head stuck up their a$$. Firearms are to PROTECT our lives and property from law-breaking people.

Requiring administrators and teachers to call 9-1-1 and then wait for police to arrive means many more deaths than using a firearm defensively to remove the threat.

    Children need to be TAUGHT.

Taught that firearms are to be respected.
Taught that firearms are to keep peace.
Taught that firearms are to defend life, liberty, and property.

It's time in this country to teach all children 5 years and up how to fire and use a gun !!

with the right training, all may be fine. It will just depend on the personnel there and how they handle the situation. Aggression and frustration are common in high schools all over the world and a weapon at your immediate disposal could turn that into a nasty experience for everybody

Guns should be allowed for clubs and events, and, in my opinion, students that have shown their responsibility should be allowed to take them as a phys ed course.

Lack of gun education has taken too many lives.
Hollywood has ruined the current crop of young'uns. Filled their heads with concentrated poop. Industrial strength. So sad to see them be their own worst enemies and you can't help them clear the crap out of their heads. michael moore can drop dead and the average IQ of America would rise. Such a lying bastard and the youth of the world swallows it because it makes them feel superior. When actually they are being destructive to all that is good.

I think it's a great idea, although, I don't know if I would trust half the kids at the schools here where I live, most of them are gang members and have a weapon on them anyway. Overall, the education of gun safety and how to use one responsibly is important. My dad taught me all about guns and how to use them when I was a kid.

Most definatly, as long as the members and guests in the club have completed an approved firearms training course. Most gun accidents involve someone unfimaliar with safe gun handling practices. Get the training and have fun at the range. Shooting is fun.

Actually, shooting is a great discipline sport. It was quite common for kids to take their 22s and shotguns to school, where the teacher would lock them up for safe keeping, and give them back to the students when school was over. Then they would go hunting or plinking. No big deal at all. Now so many people equate the TV Hollywood violence with real life and think guns are so evil, period. Just another media brainwash.
Kids are taught to safely use dangerous shop tools at school. Guns are just tools, too.
They can and should be taught gun safety and discipline. If education can prevent AIDS and auto accidents, then education can and does prevent gun accidents. It should be mandatory in America, just like driver's ed, because guns are so prevelant. Unfortunately, we so many people in this country let this fear, instead of reality, make their decisions. That's why we have all these rather ridiculous gun control laws that don't work.

Learning to handle a weapon responsibly prevents accidents. Lack of knowledge causes them. No gun ever killed anyone accidentally. In a country where children play games with guns, they never learn to handle one in a safe manner. In their mind, a gun is a toy. I learned to shoot when only seven. The Pastor of our church taught us to respect a gun, how to handle it with safety, and took us hunting. From then on, I stopped playing games with toy guns.

That training served me well in the military. Years of experience using a 22, made me an expert sniper. That saved many lives in combat. When you learn young, you learn better. It is not age which makes a person more responsible with a gun, but training. If everyone knew how to use a gun safely, there would be no accidents.

Shooting is a sport just like archery is. I think everyone should be taught how to shoot and shoot safely. It's not as scary as people make it out to be. You just have to practice safety and use caution.

Gun clubs would be a form of educational program that also teaches respect and concentration, helping kids pay attention to classes better. If you were to set up an advanced course, you could teach disarming techniques, useful for a shooting.

Do you expect that law-breaking people will read the "gun-free zone" signs and voluntarily abide? The law-breaking crazies LOOK FOR the "gun-free zone" areas to do their shooting, because they know that the occupants are defenseless. That's what happened in Newtown, the movie theater in Aurora (the gunman passed by 6 other theaters to get to the first one that was "gun-free"), and in virtually all other situations like this. When a gunman opens fire in a defended area, few are killed. Massacres only happen in "gun-free" areas. I AVOID "gun-free" areas if at all possible.

I might say yes if it were a clearly written agenda that stated where the funding was coming from, which should all come from the NRA and major gun manufacturers. I feel that way because, aside from the obvious interest in a civilian militia, such a program would only be of interest to gun manufacturers in terms of future sales and marketing guns, obviously, to children. So, on the other hand, I'd say no. Bad idea.

As long as the club is privately funded and the correct safety measures are taken, I do not see a problem. Spending tax for public school education on shooting ranges is not a justified use of the money, however.

I think if it was monitored and well regulated, it would be acceptable. If there are schools that have done it and not had problems, then we should look at those schools, and mimic their approach.

A truly bad idea because it encourages shooting others for fun. Not what a gun club is about. Not what they are trying to teach and experience.

Because of what happened at Columbine. If we allowed people to have shooting ranges and clubs for that sort of thing it would jus happen much easier, and more people would die because their accuracy would be better

NOT, if all were trained to use guns, Columbine never would have happened. The number of robberies and violent crimes is lower in all countries where citizens have guns. In GA years ago, they passed a law all homes had to have a gun. Rifle, shotgun, pistol or whatever for protection. Every adult had to take a course to train them in its use. The crime rate dropped dramatically the first year it was in effect. Criminals even said they left the state, as it was not safe for them to break into homes or businesses.

If students knew someone in the classroom was armed, a teacher or asst, etc. they would know copying Columbine would result in their death.

Exactly, Kingair. It was the void they lived in that had them swoon to the hollywood-style attitude towards guns. There was less gun violence when we grew up learning to respect a gun for the deadly tool it is and how to handle one with respect. By trying to keep them away like they don't exist ( head in sand ) the well intentioned anti-gunners left them with ONLY the hollywood-style version of what guns are about. Blame the effort to deny guns for that one.

No, because then you'd have a bunch of other kids and teachers that could defend themselves. if anything, it would be safer. I'm sorry, but Columbine is a bad example in this case, considering that only one group had guns, and the rest couldn't defend themselves.

It would teach safety, responsibility, and respect. violence wouldn't be a part of it. If anything, it would lower violence through the calming teachings of weapons use. I know, because the same has happened for me, and it really brings inner peace to the user, feeling the recoil and knowing how to use it the safest way.

You won't, if the students are well trained and disciplined. It's all about respect for the weapon, the instructor, and yourself.
