Should High School Students Be Mandated to Apply for College?

Increasing tuitions are making it harder for applicants to secure loans for college, and even to stay in college once they're there. But there's also a significant gap between job openings and requirements, which means college is more important than ever. That's why Washington D.C. council chairman Kwame Brown is proposing legislation that would require all students in D.C.'s public school system to apply to at least one college in order to graduate.

He told The Washington Post, "It's clear, when you look at jobs available in the District, many require a minimum of a college degree. The idea is to increase graduation rates and get more young folks who want to go college, college-ready." The legislation is still being developed, and it's unclear how they plan to address application fees, but he believes that even students who don't want or need to go to college should at least be prepared for the option.

Um... college isn't cheap, even the crappy unaccredited ones.

You can't force people to take on debt.

I have never felt that college should be mandatory. There are many youngsters who simply are not college material. I have no problem if the requirement were to apply for either college or a trade school. Years ago unions had excellent apprentice programs. A youngster could enter the program and within 4-5 years he would have mastered the trade. I have not seen Brown's proposed legislation, but one must keep in mind that "applying" and being accepted are two entirely different things. Also, has Brown taken into consideration that even if a student is accepted, he may not have the funds necessary for tuition, books, room, board, and incidentals. Bottom line is that this would be bad legislation. Government has done far more to damage education than it has to help. Education is best handled at the local level with no state or federal intervention.

No. 1st because everyone can't afford it, and not all are approved for financial aid.

2nd, leave it to those who actually want to go and not mess around. I see so many get money and not go, they just sit in front of the school. I don't get it!!!

No there are profession that don't require one. I see no need for everyone to get stuck paying back student loans.

"...he believes that even students who don't want or need to go to college should at least be prepared for the option." Exactly College is an option and no one should be forced to do something that they're not interested in. I get put more people in debt to obtain the all mighty expensive paper to get a "job" and then when they can't make them suffer for the rest of their lives by messing up their credit for defaulting on a loan. Credit is everything right and everyone can and will check it...employers, utility companies, banks, internet/cable/phone providers, Sallie Mae, people who "claim" u owe a debt, apartment leasers, and the list goes on and on!!! So good luck in college and life students!!!

I think its a great idea. It helps kids think about what they what to do with their lives and the thing is if you don't want to go after applying to a college. Then you don't have to go, you can apply and change your mind. Not until you have gave them money and saying that your coming, but even if you don't have to go to college but I think schools should do this because it gives kids a chance to see that there are opinions out there, not just working after high school. Yes college is not cheap, I am a sophomore at a very expensive college, so I know its not cheap but there are ways of paying for college, without really using your own money. Scholarships and all that. You shouldn't just limit yourself to one thing because you don't think you can pay for it. In the long road, college will help you, with getting a good job in the end of things. I know I love going to college, its something that is good for kids and students to try. So yes I think this is a good idea, its not like they are forcing them to go, just applying to one college. That college could turn them down or even they in the long road, could say no I change mind.

There are a lot of high school students that do not want to go to college for many reasons. College is an expensive and demanding adventure but cannot be mandated by law.

Has anyone noticed lately how every day we have one government official or another trying to run your life.

Most college applications cost roughly $50 each....do they pay for them with food stamps?

    Dictatorship!

While for most jobs, college is very important. Why force someone to apply for college when they want to go into a field that college is not need, such as the military? Or vocational fields such as mechanic or chef or hairdresser - do vocational schools count as college. Why does the government insist on trying to control peoples lived? Ugh.

It's your decision if you want to go to college. People should be able to graduate even if they don't want to go to college.

This is the stupidest idea a politician has had in quite a while, and they're not exactly geniuses at the best of times. Not everyone needs a college degree to get the job they want, not everyone can afford a college degree. The problem isn't that most jobs need a college degree but that most employers have been conned into making it a requirement. The over-certification of the American workforce is economically regressive, productively retarded and socially exclusionary. It's time to say no to college and especially say no to coerced college.

If you want a desk job or career working with your mind, go to college. If you like working with your hands and are sure you want a trade, go to trade school. If you are unsure, go to college as a degree will never hurt... but it isn't right for everyone.

Sure I don't see why not, as long as Councilman Brown is willing to dish out funds to pay for each student's app fee & 4 years of tuition as well. The idea is good & all, but there are a few reasons why it's wrong to require it, not everyone can afford to go to college, not everyone is college material, and college doesn't seem to cut it these days. I think it would be better to give incentives to those who just apply, but I don't think it's a good idea to make it a requirement.

This would be a ridiculous waste of time and money. Not every student wants to attend college. Not every student needs a college degree. Not every person can earn a college degree. America is getting obsessive-compulsive with the whole college thing. I am a college instructor, and I approve this message.

We need to revolutionize our educational system so that a person graduating from high school has the ability to get a job or at least the foundation to do a trade school, perhaps we should have a separate track for those who want to go to college.

I don't think it's a bad idea for every student to APPLY, but I don't think they should be forced to apply. It's not like they are being forced to go, but I think it would be good for every student to know before graduating high school what all of their options are just so they can make a decision with all options on the table.

This bothered me and I couldn't put my finger on it. Then the light bulb went on. When a woman took an electrical class at the local vo tech, she was pursued and even hounded by businesses to come work for them to meet government requirements. With Asians lying on their college application forms because there is a lesser chance of getting into college because they are Asian, whites are next to be turned away and blacks have a much greater chance to be accepted at college, it all comes together. It is an opportunity to make sure who gets into college, by wooing segments through their applications. The race question is discriminatory and obsolete. It should be banished not only from all government forms but from all forms completely. Why is it anyones business in an equal society?

I am a major advocate of education, and feel that today there is no excuse for anyone not finishing high school. But to require a college application from every student is high-handed and dictatorial.

Perhaps this is one politicians way of fighting unemployment: create an entire new bureaucracy of paper pushers to process thousands of unnecessary college applications.

In this economy, and lack of jobs, your going to make it mandatory to go in debt! When will it end if we keep training people to borrow money that they may not be able to pay back. That's why this country is the way it is.

Then college would be like high school, half the people don't want to be there which hurts the other 50 percent that do. Do you really want to go back to high school? Besides does the pool boy really need a degree in chemical engineering? No - the wife just wants him to look like Ryan Reynolds and hung like John Holmes...and if he can actually clean the pool - that's a bonus.
