Should Guys Be Allowed to Wear Skirts in School?

Some schools place limits on how much skin a girl can show -- how short her skirt is, etc. -- but Calvert High School in Maryland is trying to flesh out how that applies to one student's unique take on the dress code. Warren Evans, a bisexual student at Calvert High, was suspended for wearing a skirt, and he says it doesn't violate the school's dress code.

Evans told NBC Washington, "I don't think [it violated the dress code]. Why not? It didn’t say anywhere in the code of conduct or dress code that says boys can't dress like girls ... Some people aren't tolerant of that type of thing." Officials have not commented publicly on the situation, but say the dress code is not gender-specific. Some parents have sided with the school, arguing that boys in dresses would be a distraction. Do you think guys should be allowed to wear skirts during school hours?

As long as he's wearing underwear. Hate to see something poking out the bottom of the skirt.

Pushing the envelope for equality on what exactly? Sexuality? K-12 schools are a place of learning basic to moderate skills in reading, writing, arithmetic.
This isn't about tolerance, this is about him wanting to do something to get attention to prove a point, and then soak in his fifteen.

As long as it's not making the school's dress code, everyone should be allowed to wear whatever.

God D@#n!!! What next??!!?! Somebody is always trying to push the limits. Next we'll have somebody who wants to kiss their dog in public and shove it down our throats. This guy can be gay all he wants to, but we don't need him trying to push draq queen fashion down the throats of high school students.

Isn't it interesting how tolerance is only a one way street with most?

Would you offer the same tolerance for the Bible club that wants to wear their 'Jesus Saves' shirts on school spirit day?

They should be able to. We used to have a school activities group for christian athletes. They wore shirts like that all the time. It's when they are telling other people THEY need to be a christian that it becomes a problem.

Cute. A chill pill. I still say what's next. School is not the place for wild, outlandish, limit pushing, attention seeking people. Its a place to learn and get an education. All else is extraneous endeavors. Now if this guy wants to wear this to a Night Club, go for it. That's the proper place and time for attention seeking and making statements.

because he wants to wear a skirt, that means he is shoving it down someones throats? Its not like he is trying to get other people to do it which WOULD be shoving it down their throats.

My question to you is: Isn't he still gay in regular men's clothing? Can't people still tell he's gay in a pair of jeans and a T-Shirt? The only reason that he is dressing that way is to seek attention, and hence by doing so, he's shoving his sexuality down other peoples throats. I'd say the same if a guy matured early and wore his shirt open down to his navel to show off his hairy chest, or is a overly curvy girl wore a blouse open down to her navel to expose a lot of cleavage. Its all a form of attention seeking. He's no different. Just because he's gay, he can't do anything outlandish and over the top??? Not so. Schools will send boys and girls home who wear inappropriate clothing, and he's no different.
  • D.C.Ver... PM 2012/05/22 13:38:34

So what if he wants attention. I still don't see how that is shoving anything when (and if) it is attention he wants. Your definition and my definition is obviously different.

If I wanted to come to school with an Elephant Head over my head, I'd be seeking attention and a huge distraction. I'm not saying he can't wear it, just wear it to a night club or to the mall. There's a reason companies have dress codes - because people are there to work and be productive. School at that point in a person's life is their job. What's appropriate for the night club is not appropriate for work. I see it as the same.

Fair enough. He could just not wear it in school. His skirt is really short and girls aren't allowed to wear them that short so even if they DID say ok to this he would probably still not get his way XD I thought you just had a problem with it XD

No, I strongly belive in the first amendment and a person's right to express themselves, even when I don't agree with what they are saying or doing. I just feel that there are proper places and times for everything. Even the first amendment does not cover you shouting "Fire" in a crowded room when there is no fire, because of the presumption of danger. Hence, because of the environment, I feel it is inappropriate. I just feel that wearing inappropriate things to places like church, school, and work would be a distraction.

In all honesty there's an obvious lack of understand from one party. It's ok to wear kilts as a man and it's ok for women to wear man's clothes because we're (society) is used to it, but as soon as a guy wants equality the same way women have it immediately disgust people and we should make it ILLEGAL!!! In philosophy we call this an "appeal to emotion."

Appeal to emotion is a potential fallacy which uses the manipulation of the recipient's emotions, rather than valid logic, to win an argument. The appeal to emotion fallacy uses emotions as the basis of an argument's position without factual evidence that logically supports the major ideas endorsed by the elicitor of the argument. Also this kind of thinking may be evident in one who lets emotions and/or other subjective considerations influence one's reasoning process.

Conclusively, the appeal to emotion fallacy presents a perspective intended to be superior to reason. Appeals to emotion are intended to draw visceral feelings from the acquirer of the information. And in turn, the acquirer of the information is intended to be convinced that the statements that were presented in the fallacious argument are true; solely on the basis that the statements may induce emotional stimulation such as fear, pity and joy. Though these emotions may be provoked by an appeal to emotion fallacy, substantial proof of the argument is not offered, and the argument's premises remain invalid.

This guy has his whole life to dress in skirts. He should leave it at home during school hours, it distracts the learning process. On weekends and after school he can air it out all he wants.

Sure let them wear what they want. If it distracting other students, then perhaps they should allow bullying as well. After all, bullies are just expressing themselves too, right?
