Should Guys Be Allowed to Wear Skirts in School?

Some schools place limits on how much skin a girl can show -- how short her skirt is, etc. -- but Calvert High School in Maryland is trying to flesh out how that applies to one student's unique take on the dress code. Warren Evans, a bisexual student at Calvert High, was suspended for wearing a skirt, and he says it doesn't violate the school's dress code.

Evans told NBC Washington, "I don't think [it violated the dress code]. Why not? It didn’t say anywhere in the code of conduct or dress code that says boys can't dress like girls ... Some people aren't tolerant of that type of thing." Officials have not commented publicly on the situation, but say the dress code is not gender-specific. Some parents have sided with the school, arguing that boys in dresses would be a distraction. Do you think guys should be allowed to wear skirts during school hours?

If it is part of a uniform. Schools should all go to uniforms so that there would be one less distraction from learning. Otherwise, I'd have to go to a different school. I hate that crap put on anyone who is serious about learning. It is a look at me position, just creepy.

What if you don't identify as a single gender or as any gender? Or what if you're trans*? How about girls who like more comfortable guys clothing? Or guys who like more sensational girls clothing?

Sure, as long as they don't mind wearing bloody noses and black eyes as well.

When I was in school I was picked on for a variety of reasons. My hair was too long, I was too short, my shoes weren't cool enough, I was the new kid, etcetera.

I wager boys wearing skirts and heels is going to result in many ass kickings.

Not any more. It is still acceptable to bully poor kids, or kids based on the color of their skin, but if you bully a gay, then you get in big, big trouble.

It all depends on how popular the gay kid as and how progressive the school is... gay-bashing is still big in a lot of schools, even if most of the kids are accepting.

    You're missing the point.

gracious43 is attempting to point out the dangers of establishing a protected class of citizen.

You're just to naive and lacking in foresight to see the problem.

I see it, I'm just pointing out that there really is no 'protected' class of citizen. I guess I didn't make that clear.

You're absolutely correct, but kids in school don't care too much about all of that. Gracious43 was making the claim that it's okay to bully one group, but not another... I was just pointing out how that's simply not true.

Someone not being aware of the protected classes doesn't make them any less real.

It seems you've recanted your proclamation that there are no protected classes.

Sorry, I shouldn't have used sarcasm on such a forum where it can go unnoticed. My proclamation was a sarcastic response, making light of the fact that even though there are protected classes, people are still going to bully them.

...Your point? I wasn't denying other types of bullying happen just as often. You, however, state that it's acceptable to bully kids for the colour of their skin, but not for being gay... that's just not true.

And how many times have grown-ups been welcomed into schools to bully children who believe in the bible, other than homosexual grown-ups?

That's different... that's preaching intolerance for something that cannot be helped. Religion, however, is not something that can be backed by science, like homosexuality.
  • gracious43 Inquisi... 2012/05/21 15:22:32

You are not able to prove either one of those assertions.

There is no evidence that homosexuality is immute and innate; and there is no evidence that religion cannot be backed by scientific discovery.

If you believe you have any documentation for any of these claims, please submit them for review.

"there is no evidence that religion cannot be backed by scientific discovery."... you just said it, there is no evidence. Religion cannot be backed by science BECAUSE there is no evidence.

Here is a site, however, with sourced and checked scientific information that more than strongly suggests that homosexuality is biological and not a choice.

You're right, science hasn't yet discovered "the gay gene", but it at least has answers that suggest it is, in fact, biological and innate. That's a lot more than can be said for religion.

You still haven't provided me any evidence for either assertion.

Absolutely! Transgender and cross dressing students have the same rights as everyone. It's a civil rights issue pure and simple and the school discriminated aginst him out of ignorance. There is no place for that sort of stupidity in today's schools, churches or institutions. We need to respect everyone.

    Ray the Dog!
So therefore-by your 'logic'-if this deluded young lad wants to attend school attired in a basque and suspenders and nothing else- it is his absolute civic 'right' to be allowed to do so? What absolute arrant nonsense and drivel you do speak!
It is his 'civic right' to dress as he pleases OUTWITH school hours but the school has the RIGHT to decide what constitutes a reasonable dress code for their pupils when the pupils are in attendance there. JUST as by the same token, the Military, the Police, banks, etc, etc and countless other organisations all have the RIGHT to determine what constitutes reasonable and appropriate garb for their employees-when, of course, THEY are at THEIR place of employment or carrying out their duties. That is purely a matter of commonsense, nothing more. transvestite in frilly knickers
