A judge is being both praised and condemned because of a landmark ruling in which he has ordered gender reassignment surgery to an inmate in Massachusetts. Roger Kosilek, who now goes by Michelle, was born male but has been taking hormone treatments and currently stays at an all-male prison.

Supporters say that the ruling is a great example of recognizing that the surgery is a legitimate treatment for gender-identity disorder while critics call it an abuse of taxpayer money. Do you think it's OK for inmates to get gender reassignment surgery with taxpayer dollars?

CBSNEWS.COM reports:
U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf ruled Tuesday in the case of Michelle Kosilek, who was born as a man but has received hormone treatments and lives as a woman in an all-male prison.

Not only NO, but HELL NO. It's bad enough we taxpayers have to foot the bill for his/her food, clothing and shelter (and basic medical care), but it's beyond my understanding why any judge would rule that a felon's feelings are important enough to soak the taxpayers for a very expensive operation.

If it's what the inmate wants, then each to their own. We pay medical tax regardless. The only downside is the other inmate may feel more inclined to bully or beat him/her.

I don't think "bully or beat" will be the first thing on the other inmates' minds.

It's expensive elective surgery, There's no way he should get that at taxpayers expense while people on the outside are dropping like flies because the can't afford urgently needed medical care.

Moreover, wouldn't this procedure kinda defeat the whole purpose of separating prisoners by sex?

Yes but in this whole politically correct America is siding with the minority "politically correct" people. What ever happened to the majority rule? Father daughter dances have been cancelled because one single mother complained. I truly feel that America as we knew it is dead.

I'm almost with "Chukroast" on this one, not just NO, not just HELL NO, but HELL F~@#!~@ NO!!!
Not only do "it's" feelings not matter, the operation is extremely expensive ELECTIVE surgery, and does not actually produce a truly female individual when it's been done, just a more frustrated, unable to reproduce, "half female", ("half male", if the would-be recipient was originally a female)!!!
That any judge would rule that this "must be done", for a felon, who is still serving his/her time, at the expense of the taxpayers of "Taxachussetts", or any other State, is as completely incomprehensible as it is unconscionable!!!
Not only should this be done on "his/her" "own time", it should be on "his/her" "OWN DIME"!!!

@jack_kazim: The ONLY degree that those incarcerated on the public's "dime" SHOULD be able to walk out of our prisons with, also on the public's "dime" it must be noted, is a G.E.D./H.S.E.!!!
Anything more than that, provided by the taxpayers, if court ordered, IS "excessive lenience" or, if provided by the facility, absent a court order IS "extravagant use, (read MISUSE), of taxpayer funds"!!!

I see your anger and I have put myself into your shoes. But I like getting results from my tax dollars. If we give these guys funding for a degree they will become better citizens when they go out. Unemployment will go down. But I don't believe in pampering them. Only basic needs and a degree. That's it, nothing more. Also make them wear pink underwear Joe Arpiao style. Besides if we had stronger law enforcement THE CRIMINALS WOULD BE GONE!

Anger? Not really, Jack, just plenty of disgust.

Idaho's prison system has one of the lowest recidivism rates in the entire nation, and does NOT offer ANY prisoner education beyond the acquisition of a G.E.D./H.S.E., at State, (read taxpayer), expense! There is absolutely no reason to further burden the taxpayers of ANY State with such a program, and make no mistake the expense of this type of a program would end up being a MASSIVE BURDEN to "John Q. Public".
Prison is not about anything other than PUNISHMENT FOR CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR.
A beyond high school degree is a REWARD for a lot of HARD WORK, (studying)! To hand these people the opportunity to be REWARDED FOR THEIR CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR is completely UNCONSCIONABLE, and incomprehensible. Not to mention that having a system that makes a reward an integral part of the punishment, sends the offenders a horribly "mixed message": "We're sending you to this place where you're going to spend a long time being punished, oh and as a part of the "punishment" you're going to be able to acquire a college degree, or become a tradesman"!?!?
Let them, (convicts/prisoners), do that part of their "rehabilitation" "on their own time" AND "on their own dime", without exception. Doing it your way would result in massive numbers of people perpetrating c...

I agree that Sheriff Joe has (at least some of) the right ideas, when it comes to making jail a tough situation to be in, (read punishment).
It, (jail/prison), should NOT be, the "annex" to either the homeless shelters or the Universities/Trade schools of our nation!
"Don't do the crime, if you 'can't do the time' ", (and ONLY "the time")!
Every building erected on our Nation's Military (Army) posts, including "Building 1" (the concrete "foundation" that "houses" the post's Headquarters flagpole), has a letter in front of the number, that letter is "T", it stands for, you guessed it, "TEMPORARY", what "building" is more "temporary" than a tent? The only one I can call to mind is an Igloo, (which would be VERY TEMPORARY in Phoenix, Arizona, all year long)!
When Joe has "lost" his position, his replacement should continue the tradition, there is nothing "cruel", or "unusual" about housing anyone in a tent, It's good enough for our "boys in uniform", and people even drag tents with them to spend leisure time away from home in, as their temporary "housing arrangements"!

I'm also still very much against allowing extremely expensive ELECTIVE surgery for convicts/prisoners!

Explain why do the taxpayers have to pay for the SOBs sex change surgery? In my view they only deserve basic needs and funding for a degree (so they can get jobs and become useful citizens). We don't need to pamper them.

who is becoming what it held in contempt ..
paid for courtesy of TAXPAYERS (Who are also women too -- as well as men)

A slap in our Faces for sure ..

The only thing it deserves is Old Sparky ..

LET it do that AFTER its time is done in prison
    at its OWN EXPENSE ..

Absolutely NOT! This country is lost. How can they even THINK about this issue of having taxpayers pay for that nonsense?????

Truth is, I don't even want to supply them with FOOD, or air conditioning, or clean sheets. You know in Mexico, they give prisoners NONE of that. Their families supply them or they starve.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio puts them in tents, in pink clothes. He feeds each prisoner for UNDER ONE DOLLAR PER DAY ($1.00). I am ALL for that.
