Should Gender Reassignment Surgery Be Allowed for Inmates?

A judge is being both praised and condemned because of a landmark ruling in which he has ordered gender reassignment surgery to an inmate in Massachusetts. Roger Kosilek, who now goes by Michelle, was born male but has been taking hormone treatments and currently stays at an all-male prison.

Supporters say that the ruling is a great example of recognizing that the surgery is a legitimate treatment for gender-identity disorder while critics call it an abuse of taxpayer money. Do you think it's OK for inmates to get gender reassignment surgery with taxpayer dollars?

CBSNEWS.COM reports:
U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf ruled Tuesday in the case of Michelle Kosilek, who was born as a man but has received hormone treatments and lives as a woman in an all-male prison.

Not only NO, but HELL NO. It's bad enough we taxpayers have to foot the bill for his/her food, clothing and shelter (and basic medical care), but it's beyond my understanding why any judge would rule that a felon's feelings are important enough to soak the taxpayers for a very expensive operation.

The question was generic, not specific to this one guy. Sure, he should be dead and the question moot for him, but in general, if someone decides to switch sides, they should be allowed to. The problem here is this animal thinking we should pay for it.

It is bad enough that the taxpayers pay for his worthless existence, now they have to pay for his caprice. If any money is to be invested, castration would be a good option.

This is a great way to get people who want optional surgeries to commit a crime.

Why in the world should the taxpayers have to pay for this???? If he could pay for it himself or his family would pay, that would be different; then it would be only his business. But forcing others to pay for it is unethical.

i don't think they should get almost any rights. they are criminals to our society, but how bout we just give them whatever they want. some of these people are better off in prison than a man on the street. they should not be given cable tv, or novels or games, or things like that. if they want something to do, they can be given texts books, so when they get out they might be a little smarter.

Only if clinically, they were forced to take hormones all their lives because of parents or doctors making that decision because they had both organs at birth. Nobody should live in that kind of confusion. Just imagine if you were taking high testosterone, as a woman; or high estrogen, and you're a man. The confusion would be incredible, and probably cause some sort of criminal activity when you think about post partum depression causing women to kill babies and such madness. However, if it is just a choice, not supported by science and history on that person, then no.

If I wanted to do the same, would the government pay for mine? I think not. So why should an inmate get preferential treatment? It's not like s/he is going to be able to go out and enjoy he/r new found gender. Why bother?

ABSOLUTELY NOT and MOST absolutely not with taxpayer money!!!!!!!! I firmly believe that once a person is in prison they shouldn't have access to any Human Right except the right not to be physically abused by other inmates or prison staff. If this person is now a woman she should be serving the rest of her time in a female prison, not with the men she's so crazy about. I'm sure they've made a woman out of her long before the gender change operation. Tax payers pay enough as it is supporting prisoners with their free educations and all their luxuries as it is without now paying for free surgery to serve their whims.

Hell no, I wouldn't be able to get one for free (not that I want one) but HELLO, inmate!! Why should we give free elective surgery to criminals.!? That doesn't even make sence. They are already a blight to society, get three hots and a cot, sit around watching tv all day. No, shouldn't get elective surgery too.

Totally agree!!!! Also, I feel that any judge who uses his authority and steps outside of the law should lose his job. I doubt there is any law allowing cosmetic or unnecessary surgery for inmates, especially for free and billed to the taxpayers. Judges are for passing sentences and for making sure justice is served according to law. They are not paid to form their own laws and bill it to taxpayers. I know that the law states that people are entitled to gender change surgery but at their own expense, not to the expense of taxpayers and this is where the judge has stepped outside of his boundaries. He should lose his job and be billed the amount that has been charged to taxpayers.

the problem with a judge making such stupid call is that it makes for presidence for other cases. That is how the law is. Lawyers will us that ruling for others to also get it. Justice remains blind.

NO, hell no. Good grief what the HELL was that maggot brained judge thinking. AND the poor taxpayers also have to pay his ongoing legal bills and it is well over a million dollars, all these confused transgender freaks NEED to stop sticking it to the taxpayers.

How about this will lead to a spike in crime so that more of the transgender freaks will get the surgery free on our dime?

    Damn and blast.
